# What are the best WordPress alternatives for an enterprise?

Reviewed by Martin Dejnicki · facts verified 25 October 2026 · canonical: https://deploi.ca/sanity/compare/wordpress-alternatives-for-enterprise

## Short answer

Sanity is Deploi's pick among enterprise WordPress alternatives when content feeds several sites or brands and developers own the code. Growth costs $15 per seat a month ([Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing), October 2026). WordPress VIP (managed WordPress) wins when plugins must stay ([WordPress VIP](https://wpvip.com/blog/wordpress-org-vs-wordpress-com-vs-wordpress-vip-whats-the-difference/), October 2026). Drupal fits self-hosting; Adobe Experience Manager and Sitecore, an owned suite.

- **WordPress VIP published prices:** None: all three packages say Request pricing. Standard, Enhanced and Signature each list Request pricing, as of October 2026. Uptime SLAs are 99.95% on Standard and 99.99% on Enhanced and Signature. ([WordPress VIP, Pricing](https://wpvip.com/pricing/))
- **WordPress VIP compliance:** FedRAMP Moderate and SOC 2 Type 2. VIP calls itself the only enterprise WordPress platform with FedRAMP Moderate authorization. Its Trust Center also lists GovRAMP Moderate and TX-RAMP Level 2. ([WordPress VIP, Security, Compliance & Governance](https://wpvip.com/capabilities/security/); [WordPress VIP, Trust Center](https://wpvip.com/trust/))
- **Sanity Growth price:** $15 per seat a month, billed monthly. Free is $0 for up to 20 seats; Growth runs to 50 seats; Enterprise is custom and adds SAML single sign-on and custom roles, as of October 2026. ([Sanity, Plans that scale with you](https://www.sanity.io/pricing); [Sanity, Sanity for Startups](https://www.sanity.io/startups))
- **WordPress end-of-life date:** None published; 7.1.3 is current. Only the latest WordPress version is officially supported. PHP's support page says PHP 8.2's security support ends 31 December 2026, which is a hosting upgrade, not a reason to replatform. ([WordPress.org, Security](https://wordpress.org/about/security/); [WordPress.org, Release Archive](https://wordpress.org/download/releases/); [PHP, Supported Versions](https://www.php.net/supported-versions.php))

## Deploi's call

Start from why you're leaving WordPress, not from a ranked list. Pick Sanity when content has to feed several sites, brands or apps and a developer team will own it. If editors and plugins must stay, buy WordPress VIP instead of replatforming; if policy demands self-hosting, pick Drupal.

**PICK: Pick Sanity as your WordPress alternative when**

- The same content has to feed several sites, brands or apps, so structured documents beat HTML pages.
- A developer team will own Sanity Studio and the front end after launch, because the Studio is configured in JavaScript or TypeScript.
- You want published self-serve prices to start: Growth is $15 per seat a month as of October 2026, and Enterprise adds single sign-on (SSO) and custom roles.

**ALTERNATIVE: Pick WordPress VIP, Drupal, Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), Sitecore or Contentful when**

- WordPress VIP (Automattic's managed WordPress): editors and plugins must stay and you need Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) Moderate authorization or the 99.99% uptime service-level agreement (SLA) VIP's pricing page lists, as of October 2026.
- Drupal: policy requires self-hosted open source with permissions per content type, because Sanity's docs say Sanity Studio always connects to the hosted Content Lake.
- AEM or Sitecore: you already license the suite and use its digital asset management (DAM) or personalization, so leaving means replacing tools you pay for.
- Contentful: non-developers must change the content model in a web app.

## Which WordPress alternatives fit an enterprise in October 2026?

Five WordPress alternatives make this enterprise shortlist: WordPress VIP (Automattic's managed WordPress), Sanity, Contentful, Drupal and Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Sites. Every cell except the Fit row comes from the vendor's own pages, read 24 October 2026. Our view of the platforms other than Sanity rests on their documentation. Sitecore is the other suite option. [Sanity against Contentful](https://deploi.ca/sanity/compare/sanity-vs-contentful) compares the two hosted headless options.

**Each WordPress alternative fits one reason for leaving, so the last row is a fit, not a rank**

| Criterion | WordPress VIP | Sanity | Contentful | Drupal | AEM Sites |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hosting | Fully managed by Automattic | Hosted by Sanity; only the Studio can self-host | Run by Contentful, served from a CDN | Installed on servers you choose | AEM as a Cloud Service, updated up to several times a month |
| Editor | WordPress block editor and plugins | Sanity Studio, configured in code | Web app for content and fields | Drupal admin, permissions per content type | AEM authoring plus Content Fragments |
| Fit | Editors and plugins stay | One content model for many channels and brands | Non-developers change the model | Self-hosted open source required | Adobe suite already licensed |

The Fit row is Deploi's judgment. CDN is a content delivery network (CDN). As of 24 October 2026.

## What do the WordPress alternatives cost, as published?

Only Sanity and Contentful publish self-serve prices among these alternatives; WordPress VIP (Automattic's managed WordPress), Adobe and Sitecore quote each deal, and Drupal charges no license fee. Sanity lists Growth at $15 per seat a month, billed monthly ([Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing), October 2026). Contentful's pricing page lists Lite at $300 a month for up to 20 users ([Contentful pricing](https://www.contentful.com/pricing/), October 2026), and its Free plan "may not be used to support commercial use cases" ([Contentful usage limits](https://www.contentful.com/help/usage-limits-january-2026/), October 2026). WordPress VIP's packages each say "Request pricing" ([WordPress VIP pricing](https://wpvip.com/pricing/), October 2026). Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) and Sitecore show no price on their product pages ([Adobe](https://business.adobe.com/products/experience-manager/sites/aem-sites.html); [Sitecore](https://www.sitecore.com/platform/content-management-system), October 2026).

**Two of six WordPress alternatives publish a usable price; the rest quote or charge no license fee**

| Platform | Entry price a month | Top tier |
| --- | --- | --- |
| WordPress VIP | Request pricing | Request pricing |
| Sanity | Free $0; Growth $15 a seat | Enterprise, custom |
| Contentful | Lite $300 (Free $0 is for testing only) | Enterprise, custom |
| Drupal | No license fees | None |
| AEM Sites | Not published | Not published |
| Sitecore | Not published | Not published |

Monthly list prices. Sanity's self-serve plans bill monthly; Contentful's pricing page names no currency or term. Sources: [Sanity, Plans that scale with you](https://www.sanity.io/pricing); [Sanity, Sanity for Startups](https://www.sanity.io/startups); [Contentful, Pricing](https://www.contentful.com/pricing/); [Contentful, Usage limits](https://www.contentful.com/help/usage-limits-january-2026/); [WordPress VIP, Pricing](https://wpvip.com/pricing/); [Drupal.org, About Drupal](https://www.drupal.org/about); [Adobe, Adobe Experience Manager Sites](https://business.adobe.com/products/experience-manager/sites/aem-sites.html); [Sitecore, SitecoreAI CMS](https://www.sitecore.com/platform/content-management-system). As of 24 October 2026.

Drupal's free license isn't a free platform, because it still needs hosting, updates and developers (Deploi's judgment).

## Which alternative fits your reason for leaving WordPress?

Patch load points to WordPress VIP (managed WordPress), several channels or brands to Sanity or Contentful, mandatory self-hosting to Drupal, and a licensed suite to Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) or Sitecore. Page speed alone points to staying, because hosting and caching cost less than a rebuild (Deploi's judgment); [the stay-or-leave test](https://deploi.ca/sanity/migration/leaving-wordpress) decides whether to leave. One app needing the content points to [headless or hybrid WordPress](https://deploi.ca/sanity/compare/headless-wordpress-or-new-cms).

**Each reason for leaving WordPress points to a different alternative**

| Reason for leaving | Shortlist | Why it fits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Patch load | WordPress VIP | Patched before WordPress ships the fix, VIP says; your plugins stay |
| Several channels or brands | Sanity or Contentful | Structured data any front end reads |
| Self-hosted open source required | Drupal | GPL software with no license fees |
| Digital asset management (DAM) already licensed | AEM Sites or Sitecore | You keep the suite you pay for |
| Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) Moderate required | WordPress VIP or AEM Managed Services | VIP and Adobe say they hold it; no Sanity page lists it |

The mapping is Deploi's judgment. AEM is Adobe Experience Manager (AEM); GPL is the General Public License (GPL). FedRAMP status is what VIP and Adobe say; Adobe names AEM Managed Services, not the Cloud Service, so ask each vendor for its level. ## Why is Sanity our pick, and for which teams?

Sanity is our pick for enterprises that leave WordPress because the same content has to serve several sites, brands or apps, and that have a developer team to own it. Sanity says content is "treated as data, making it reusable across web, mobile, apps, agents, and any future channel" ([Sanity](https://www.sanity.io/cms-for-enterprise), October 2026). So one article can feed a website, an app and a second brand. Three facts back the pick, as of October 2026:

- **Editors work together.** Real-time editing with "no locking, no merge conflicts" and Visual Editing are on every plan, Free included ([Sanity Studio](https://www.sanity.io/studio); [Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing); [Sanity Docs](https://www.sanity.io/docs/visual-editing/introduction-to-visual-editing), October 2026). WordPress VIP (Automattic's managed WordPress) also sells real-time collaboration seats ([WordPress VIP pricing](https://wpvip.com/pricing/), October 2026), so this is not unique to Sanity.
- **Prices are published.** Free is $0 for up to 20 seats, and Growth is $15 per seat a month, billed monthly, up to 50 seats ([Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing); [Sanity for Startups](https://www.sanity.io/startups), October 2026).
- **Enterprise adds governance.** Single sign-on (SSO) and custom roles are Enterprise features ([Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing); [Sanity Docs](https://www.sanity.io/docs/content-lake/roles-concepts), October 2026), and [keeping each brand's editors in their own content](https://deploi.ca/sanity/use-cases/multi-brand-content-hub) inside one Sanity project depends on custom roles.

The [Sanity and WordPress head-to-head](https://deploi.ca/sanity/compare/sanity-vs-wordpress) and Sanity's enterprise readiness review go deeper, and [the WordPress to Sanity playbook](https://deploi.ca/sanity/migration/wordpress-to-sanity) covers the move.

## When is enterprise WordPress the better answer?

Enterprise WordPress is the better answer when editors and plugins must stay and the problem is running WordPress, not WordPress itself, because a managed platform fixes hosting, compliance and uptime without a rebuild. WordPress VIP (Automattic's managed enterprise WordPress) is the reference option, as of October 2026:

- **Plugins stay.** VIP says developers "can use any WordPress plugin" ([WordPress VIP blog](https://wpvip.com/blog/wordpress-org-vs-wordpress-com-vs-wordpress-vip-whats-the-difference/), October 2026).
- **Compliance is certified.** VIP holds Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) Moderate authorization and System and Organization Controls (SOC) 2 Type 2 compliance ([WordPress VIP security](https://wpvip.com/capabilities/security/); [WordPress VIP Trust Center](https://wpvip.com/trust/), October 2026).
- **Uptime is contracted.** VIP's pricing page lists an uptime service-level agreement (SLA) of 99.95% to 99.99% by package, and each package says "Request pricing" ([WordPress VIP pricing](https://wpvip.com/pricing/), October 2026).

Enterprise WordPress stops being the answer when the same content has to feed several brands or apps, so reuse, not hosting, is the problem (Deploi's judgment). Our view of WordPress VIP rests on its own pages. [The stay-or-leave page](https://deploi.ca/sanity/migration/leaving-wordpress) lists VIP's packages in full, and whether WordPress VIP or Sanity fits your estate runs that choice.

## Where is Sanity not the pick?

Sanity is not the pick when policy requires self-hosting, when you already pay for a suite you use, or when nobody will own the code. Self-hosting rules Sanity out, because Sanity hosts the content store: "Sanity Studio always connects to a dataset in the hosted Content Lake, also when run locally" ([Sanity Docs, Studio development](https://www.sanity.io/docs/studio/development), October 2026). You can self-host the Studio, which still connects to Sanity's hosted Content Lake ([Sanity Docs, Hosting and deployment](https://www.sanity.io/docs/studio/deployment), October 2026).

> **When Sanity is not the pick for an enterprise leaving WordPress**
>
> - Self-hosting is mandatory: pick Drupal, General Public License (GPL) software with "no licensing fees, ever" ([Drupal.org](https://www.drupal.org/about), October 2026).
> - A suite is already licensed: Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Sites pairs Adobe's content management system (CMS) with its digital asset management (DAM) ([Adobe Experience League](https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/experience-manager-cloud-service/content/overview/what-is-new-and-different), October 2026).
> - A suite is already licensed: SitecoreAI, formerly XM Cloud, is Sitecore's hybrid headless platform for personalized experiences ([Sitecore Documentation](https://doc.sitecore.com/sai/en/developers/sitecoreai/sitecoreai.html); [Sitecore Documentation](https://doc.sitecore.com/sai/en/developers/sitecoreai/sitecore-cli-xm-cloud-plugin.html), October 2026). Sanity's Media Library is an Enterprise add-on ([Sanity Docs](https://www.sanity.io/docs/media-library/introduction), October 2026).
> - Nobody will own the Studio: Sanity's course warns that PHP teams "may need to up-skill with JavaScript to configure the Studio" ([Sanity Learn](https://www.sanity.io/learn/course/re-platforming-to-sanity/planning-a-re-platforming-project), October 2026).
> - WooCommerce carries the revenue: keep WordPress until checkout has a new home (Deploi's judgment).

[Sanity against Drupal](https://deploi.ca/sanity/compare/sanity-vs-drupal) and [Sanity against AEM](https://deploi.ca/sanity/compare/sanity-vs-aem) test the first two cases.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** Enterprise CMS guides often call WordPress a monolith that struggles with anything more than a simple website, and agency posts imply a deadline to leave it. Neither holds. WordPress publishes no end-of-life date, and the nearest dated deadline, PHP 8.2's security support ending 31 December 2026 by PHP's own support page, is a hosting upgrade. WordPress VIP's pricing page lists up to 1,000 network sites on its largest package, with uptime service-level agreements, and VIP holds FedRAMP Moderate authorization. The real case for leaving is structural: content locked in HTML pages that other channels and brands can't reuse.

**How we scope it.** We start with the reason for leaving and two counts: how many sites, brands and channels read the same content, and how many plugins write content or serve visitors. Several channels point to Sanity. One site with many content-writing plugins points to WordPress VIP or to staying put.

**Where we would push back.** A request for proposal that asks for the best WordPress alternative without naming a reason for leaving. Without one, the shortlist drifts to the biggest suites, and you license digital asset management and personalization you may never switch on.

## When this answer changes

- WordPress VIP publishes package prices or changes its uptime SLAs or network-site limits
- WordPress VIP's or Adobe's FedRAMP status changes, or Sanity lists a FedRAMP authorization
- Sanity changes Growth's $15 per seat price, its seat limits, or which features need Enterprise
- WordPress core ships real-time collaboration from Phase 3 of WordPress.org's roadmap
- Salesforce changes Contentful's published plans, or the Free plan's commercial-use terms, after the acquisition
- Adobe or Sitecore publishes list prices
