# Is Sanity a good CMS?

Experience: Deploi runs this in production.

## Short answer

Sanity is a good content management system (CMS) for developer-led teams that manage structured content across several pages, sites or channels, and a poor one for teams with no developer to configure Sanity Studio. Its Growth plan costs $15 per seat a month, but single sign-on, custom roles and backups are Enterprise only ([Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing), October 2026).

- **Growth plan price:** $15 per seat a month, up to 50 seats. Billed monthly by card; Free is $0 with 20 seats; Enterprise is custom pricing, with annual billing only there ([Sanity, Plans that scale with you](https://www.sanity.io/pricing))
- **Enterprise-only controls:** SAML single sign-on, custom roles, backups. Also Enterprise only: audit log, uptime SLA and cross-dataset references, plus the Content Releases and Media Library add-ons ([Sanity, Plans that scale with you](https://www.sanity.io/pricing); [Sanity Docs, Set up single sign-on with SAML](https://www.sanity.io/docs/developer-guides/sso-saml); [Sanity Docs, Backups](https://www.sanity.io/docs/content-lake/backups))
- **Growth ceilings:** 25,000 documents and 2 datasets. Documents are hard-capped on Growth, $299 a month lifts them to 50,000; each extra dataset costs $999 a month, up to 2 more ([Sanity, Plans that scale with you](https://www.sanity.io/pricing); [Sanity Docs, Plans and payments](https://www.sanity.io/docs/platform-management/plans-and-payments); [Sanity Docs, Extending the Growth plan with paid add-ons](https://www.sanity.io/docs/platform-management/growth-plan-add-ons))
- **Locales and content types:** Unlimited on every plan. Bounded by unique attributes per dataset: 2,000 on Free and 10,000 on Growth; the docs say 10,000 on Enterprise too, though pricing says Custom ([Sanity, Plans that scale with you](https://www.sanity.io/pricing); [Sanity Docs, Attribute limit](https://www.sanity.io/docs/content-lake/attribute-limit))

## Deploi's call

Sanity is one of the strongest content platforms we know for developer-led teams that treat content as structured data, and we run our own decision pages on it. Choose it with a developer who owns Sanity Studio, and price Enterprise before you build if single sign-on, custom roles or backups are on your list.

**FITS: Choose Sanity when**

- A developer or agency owns the content management system (CMS) code, Sanity Studio and the front end, and will keep owning them after launch.
- Your content is structured data reused across pages, sites, brands or channels, not one-off pages.
- You publish at volume from code, scripts or agents, such as decision pages, catalogs or knowledge bases.
- You fit inside Growth's ceilings as of October 2026, 25,000 documents (50,000 with the $299 add-on) and 2 datasets (4 with paid extras), or you're buying Enterprise anyway.

**MISFIT: Look elsewhere when**

- Nobody will maintain Studio's code, and marketers expect to add page types or fields themselves, because Sanity Studio's schema lives in code.
- SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) single sign-on, custom roles or backups are must-haves and an Enterprise quote won't be approved.
- You want one product that also hosts and renders the website; Sanity is headless and stops at content.

## Deploi's rating: 4 out of 5

| Criterion | Score | Basis | Why |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Content modeling | 4.5 / 5 | production | Schema lives in code with unlimited content types and locales on every plan; the ceiling is 10,000 unique attributes per dataset, even on Enterprise. |
| Editor experience | 3.5 / 5 | documentation | Real-time co-editing and Visual Editing on every plan; comments, tasks and Scheduled drafts need Growth, and every new field or view is developer work. |
| Developer experience | 4.5 / 5 | production | TypeScript schemas, GROQ and generally available TypeGen; three Studio major versions in under a year each changed a runtime requirement. |
| Performance and scale | 4 / 5 | documentation | Cached CDN reads are not rate limited; Growth hard-caps documents at 25,000, or 50,000 with the add-on. |
| [Localization](https://deploi.ca/sanity/review/localization) | 4 / 5 | documentation | Unlimited locales on every plan, field-level or document-level; translated fields spend the attribute budget. |
| Governance and security | 3 / 5 | documentation | SOC 2 on every plan; SAML single sign-on, custom roles, backups, audit log and an uptime SLA are Enterprise only. |
| AI and automation | 4 / 5 | production | Content Agent and Agent Actions on every plan, with 1,000 AI credits a month on Free and Growth; Agent Actions docs still say experimental. We run semantic search in GROQ and have pushed agent-written drafts through Sanity's MCP server for review; our view of Content Agent and Agent Actions rests on Sanity's documentation. |
| SEO and structured output | 4 / 5 | production | Structured fields make JSON-LD that can't drift from the page; Sanity renders nothing, so the front end owns SEO. |
| Ecosystem and integrations | 4 / 5 | documentation | Visual Editing for Next.js, Nuxt, Svelte, Remix, Astro and more; Sanity Connect syncs Shopify; GROQ and GraphQL on every plan. |
| Pricing and value | 3.5 / 5 | documentation | Free and Growth at $15 per seat a month are good value; extra datasets cost $999 a month each, and the governance features sit behind a custom Enterprise quote. |

## Is Sanity a good CMS in October 2026?

Sanity is a good content management system (CMS) in October 2026 for teams with a developer who owns the content model, and a weak one for teams without that developer. Deploi scores it on 10 criteria: 4 from production use, because deploi.ca's Shopify sections run on Sanity, and 6 from Sanity's own documentation.

Sanity is a headless CMS: content lives in Content Lake, Sanity's hosted database, and editors work in Sanity Studio, an editing app that developers configure in code ([Sanity Studio](https://www.sanity.io/studio), October 2026). That split explains most of this review. The content model, the queries and the structured output are excellent, so developer-facing criteria score high. The editing experience, the governance controls and the price of scale depend on who configures Studio and which plan you buy, so those criteria score lower. If you're new to the product, start with [what Sanity is and who it's for](https://deploi.ca/sanity/faq/what-is-sanity).

## How does Sanity score on each criterion we evaluate?

Sanity scores 4 out of 5 overall on Deploi's 10-criterion rubric: the average of the ten scores is 3.9, rounded to the nearest half (Deploi arithmetic from the table). Every criterion carries equal weight and a basis. *Production* means we run it on deploi.ca today, counted 24 October 2026. *Documentation* means the score rests on Sanity's pricing, docs and legal pages, opened 24 October 2026. Localization has its own review, [how Sanity handles localization](https://deploi.ca/sanity/review/localization), where translations live either as field values in one document or as separate documents per language ([Localization docs](https://www.sanity.io/docs/studio/localization), October 2026).

**Sanity scores highest where developers work and lowest where Enterprise gates sit**

| Criterion | Score out of 5 | Verdict | Basis |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Content modeling | 4.5 | Strong | Production |
| Editor experience | 3.5 | Mixed | Documentation |
| Developer experience | 4.5 | Strong | Production |
| Performance and scale | 4 | Good | Documentation |
| Localization | 4 | Good | Documentation |
| Governance and security | 3 | Mixed | Documentation |
| AI and automation | 4 | Good | Production |
| Search engine optimization (SEO) and structured output | 4 | Good | Production |
| Ecosystem and integrations | 4 | Good | Documentation |
| Pricing and value | 3.5 | Mixed | Documentation |
| Overall | 4 | Good | Mixed |

As of 24 October 2026.

## Where is Sanity strongest?

Sanity is strongest at content modeling, developer experience and structured output, and we rate all three from production. Content types are schema code in your repository, written in TypeScript or JavaScript and deployed with your build ([Sanity Studio](https://www.sanity.io/studio), October 2026), and every plan includes unlimited content types and locales ([Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing), October 2026). Here's what that bought us on deploi.ca, counted 24 October 2026:

- 701 Build vs. Buy decision pages run as one document each, with a 12-dimension score array.
- App prices live once on 1,523 published app profiles and join into pages at query time with GROQ (Graph-Relational Object Queries), so a price refresh is one edit per app.
- 229 of 256 live frequently asked questions (FAQ) answers carry tables we added to Portable Text, Sanity's rich text stored as data.
- JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) structured data on those pages is built from the same fields as the visible copy, so it can't drift, which is the core of our Sanity search engine optimization (SEO) review.
- FAQ search runs semantic queries in plain GROQ through dataset embeddings ([Dataset Embeddings](https://www.sanity.io/docs/content-lake/dataset-embeddings), October 2026), with a keyword fallback.

Tooling keeps improving: TypeGen, which generates TypeScript types from schemas and queries, became generally available on 17 February 2026 ([Sanity TypeGen](https://www.sanity.io/blog/sanity-typegen-ga)).

## Where does Sanity fall short?

Sanity falls short on plan gates and Growth ceilings, which is where most buyers get surprised. SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) single sign-on, custom roles, backups, an audit log and an uptime guarantee are Enterprise only, and Enterprise is custom pricing ([Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing), October 2026); the backups guide repeats the gate ([Backups docs](https://www.sanity.io/docs/content-lake/backups), October 2026). Content Releases, which publishes many documents as one unit, became an Enterprise add-on in November 2025 ([Sanity blog](https://www.sanity.io/blog/scheduled-drafts)), as our [Content Releases review](https://deploi.ca/sanity/features/content-releases) details.

Growth has three ceilings to size before you build:

- **Documents:** 25,000 included, counting drafts and plugin documents, with no overage allowed; a $299 a month add-on lifts it to 50,000 ([Plans and payments](https://www.sanity.io/docs/platform-management/plans-and-payments); [Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing), October 2026).
- **Datasets:** 2, plus up to 2 more at $999 per dataset a month ([Growth add-ons](https://www.sanity.io/docs/platform-management/growth-plan-add-ons); [Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing), October 2026).
- **Roles:** 5 fixed roles; custom roles need Enterprise ([Roles guide](https://www.sanity.io/docs/user-guides/roles), October 2026).

On deploi.ca the Enterprise gate on cross-dataset references shaped one design choice. One Studio runs three workspaces on two datasets, and links between them are validated URL strings, because references across datasets are an Enterprise feature ([Cross-dataset references](https://www.sanity.io/docs/studio/cross-dataset-references)).

## How hard is Sanity for teams without developers?

Sanity is hard to run without a developer, because Sanity Studio is configured in code: developers define content models as JavaScript objects, and Studio generates the editing interface from them ([Studio docs](https://www.sanity.io/docs/studio), October 2026). Day-to-day editing is easy. Editors get real-time co-editing with no locking, plus live preview and Visual Editing, on every plan ([Sanity pricing](https://www.sanity.io/pricing), October 2026). Comments, tasks and Scheduled drafts need Growth.

The learning curve sits in change, not in typing. A new field, page type, preview or approval step is a code change and a deploy. On deploi.ca, making one settings document impossible to duplicate took three separate pieces of Studio configuration; Studio 6.17.0 has since added a dedicated singleton API ([Structure Builder cheat sheet](https://www.sanity.io/docs/studio/structure-builder-cheat-sheet), October 2026).

Upkeep is real too. Sanity Studio shipped three major versions in under a year, each changing a runtime requirement while schemas stayed the same: Node.js 20 in July 2025 ([Studio v4](https://www.sanity.io/blog/a-major-version-bump-for-a-minor-reason)), React 19.2 in December 2025 ([Studio v5](https://www.sanity.io/blog/sanity-studio-v5)) and Vite 8 with Node.js 20 dropped in June 2026 ([Studio v6](https://www.sanity.io/blog/sanity-studio-v6)).

## Which of Sanity's own pages disagree, and which should you trust?

Sanity's own pages disagree on five buying facts as of 24 October 2026, and the page closest to the feature wins: a docs or legal page beats a pricing or product page. In most pairs both statements are true of different things, so the table gives the reading we plan with.

**Where Sanity's pages disagree, and how we read each pair**

| Topic | One Sanity page says | Another Sanity page says | How we read it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Enterprise attributes | Custom (pricing) | 10,000, not raised by moving to Enterprise (attribute limit docs) | Plan for 10,000 |
| SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) single sign-on | Enterprise plan (setup guide and pricing) | Enterprise, or Growth with a SAML add-on (command line login reference) | Enterprise; the Growth add-ons page lists no SAML add-on |
| Agent Actions, Sanity's tool for AI edits from code | Yes on every plan (pricing) | Experimental, subject to change (docs) | Available, not stable |
| Uptime | More than 99.9% (Enterprise page) | 99.9% or 99.95% by Enterprise contract tier (service-level agreement) | Your contract tier sets it |
| Schema changes | No migrations (Studio product page) | Migrations are high-stakes (migration docs) | Reshaping live content still needs a migration |

As of 24 October 2026.

Content Agent has no such gap: Sanity declared it generally available in January 2026 ([Content Agent launch post](https://www.sanity.io/blog/content-agent-days-of-work-in-one-conversation)).

## Which types of organization should choose Sanity?

Developer-led organizations with structured content should choose Sanity; teams with no developer, or with Enterprise security needs and no Enterprise budget, shouldn't. The verdicts are Deploi's judgment, as of October 2026.

**Sanity fits developer-led teams, partly fits commerce and regulated teams, and misfits teams with no developer**

| Organization type | Verdict | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Multi-brand or multi-market enterprise with developers | FITS | One content model, unlimited locales; price Enterprise for single sign-on, custom roles and backups |
| Mid-market brand or software company with a developer | FITS | Growth gives up to 50 seats and 5 roles at $15 per seat a month |
| Shopify brand adding editorial content | PARTIAL | Sanity Connect syncs products, variants and collections, and each counts toward Growth's 25,000 documents |
| Team leaving Adobe Experience Manager, Sitecore or Drupal | PARTIAL | Sanity replaces the content repository, not page rendering, so the front end is rebuilt |
| Regulated organization needing audit logs and single sign-on | PARTIAL | Both are Enterprise only, priced by quote |
| Small team with no developer | MISFIT | Every new field, page type or preview is a code change |

Sources: [Sanity, Plans that scale with you](https://www.sanity.io/pricing); [Sanity Docs, Plans and payments](https://www.sanity.io/docs/platform-management/plans-and-payments); [Sanity, Sanity Studio](https://www.sanity.io/studio); [Sanity Docs, Displaying Sanity content in Shopify](https://www.sanity.io/docs/developer-guides/displaying-sanity-content-in-shopify). As of 24 October 2026.

The PARTIAL rows are a yes with a budget or rebuild line, not a no. If Contentful is also on your shortlist, our [Sanity vs Contentful comparison](https://deploi.ca/sanity/compare/sanity-vs-contentful) sets the two side by side.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** The common line is that Sanity is cheap to start and cheap to scale. The Free and Growth plans are cheap, but the controls large organizations treat as basic, SAML single sign-on, custom roles, backups, an audit log and an uptime SLA, are Enterprise only, and Content Releases moved there as an add-on in November 2025. The second wrong claim is that changing a model in code needs no migrations: adding fields doesn't, but reshaping fields that already hold live content does, and Sanity's own migration docs call that high-stakes. The third is that Sanity is for developers only. Editors get real-time co-editing and click-to-edit previews on every plan; what they don't get is the power to change the model without a developer.

**What we've seen.** We run deploi.ca's Shopify sections on Sanity: 701 Build vs. Buy decision pages, each one document with a 12-dimension score array, counted 24 October 2026. App prices live once on 1,523 published app profiles and join into pages at query time with GROQ, so a price refresh is one edit per app. 229 of 256 live FAQ answers carry tables we added to Portable Text, and their JSON-LD is built from the same fields as the visible copy. The limits showed up too: one Studio runs three workspaces on two datasets, links between those datasets are stored as validated URL strings because cross-dataset references need an Enterprise plan, and making a settings document impossible to duplicate took three separate pieces of Studio configuration.

**What we'd tell you to do first.** Count your documents, including drafts and anything a plugin or Shopify sync writes, then count datasets, roles and seats. List which of single sign-on, custom roles, backups and multi-document releases you can't live without. If any of those four is a must, get the Enterprise quote in writing before you build on Growth, because those features don't come as Growth add-ons.

**Martin's take.** Martin Dejnicki has worked with content management systems for more than 20 years and built and managed hundreds of WordPress sites between 2005 and 2017.

## When this answer changes

- Sanity moves SAML single sign-on, custom roles or backups below Enterprise, or publishes Enterprise prices
- Sanity changes Growth's $15 seat price, 25,000-document quota or 2-dataset limit
- Sanity raises the 10,000-attribute ceiling on Enterprise
- Agent Actions loses its experimental label
- Content Releases returns to Growth
- A Studio major version changes schemas or configuration, not just a runtime
