# Is kitting the right solution for a subscription-box or bundle-heavy Shopify brand, or does that belong on the subscriptions/bundles app side instead?

## Short answer

Kitting is the right solution only for fixed sets, like a starter box, because a pre-built box can't follow changing contents. Boxes that change each cycle and mix-and-match bundles belong in the subscriptions or bundles app, which lists each item on the order for your third-party logistics (3PL) provider. Shopify's own Bundles app can't run a subscription box ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/eligibility-and-considerations), October 2026).

- **Shopify Bundles and subscriptions:** Not compatible. Shopify: "Bundles aren't compatible with purchase options, which includes subscriptions, pre-orders, and try-before-you-buy" (October 2026). ([Shopify Help Center, Eligibility and considerations for using product bundles](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/eligibility-and-considerations))
- **What a Recharge box order carries:** The box product plus each item at $0.00. Recharge advises delaying an order management system's sync by a few minutes so the bundle breakdown can update before the warehouse imports it (October 2026). ([Recharge, Getting started with Bundles](https://docs.getrecharge.com/docs/bundles-overview))
- **ShipMonk box batch floor:** 50 identical orders. ShipMonk kits subscription boxes on an assembly line in batches of the exact same items; a smaller batch pays a batching fee ShipMonk doesn't publish (October 2026). ([ShipMonk, 3PL Fulfillment Pricing for D2C Brands](https://www.shipmonk.com/pricing))
- **Cin7 Core entry plan:** $349 a month, 6,000 sale orders a year. Kits and bills of materials are included; Advanced, at $1,199 a month, includes 120,000 sale orders a year, with more available for purchase (October 2026). ([Cin7, Cin7 Pricing](https://www.cin7.com/pricing/))

## Deploi's call

For a box that changes every cycle, put the logic app-side and buy assembly labor by the hour rather than stocking a kit under its own stock-keeping unit (SKU). The thing you actually need from your third-party logistics (3PL) provider is a correct, dated build sheet at the pick face, not a finished-goods bin. We scored bundle inventory sync WAIT in part because a second inventory source of truth is the cost that shows up later (Deploi decision record, October 2026).

**BUY: Buy the box logic from a subscription app, and the assembly from your third-party logistics (3PL) provider, when**

- The box's contents change every cycle, or subscribers choose, swap or skip, so no stocked kit stays right for a cycle.
- The box would otherwise be a Shopify bundle, which can't be sold on subscription ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/eligibility-and-considerations), October 2026); [which plan each app puts its box builder on](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/subscription-box-app-vs-simple-recurring-orders) has its own answer.
- Your 3PL can import the app's component lines, such as the $0.00 items Recharge adds beside the box ([Recharge](https://docs.getrecharge.com/docs/bundles-overview), October 2026).
- Kits are most of what ships, which [Deploi's kitting record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/kitting-at-the-pick-face) scores BUY on a warehouse system's work orders (October 2026); a 3PL that takes kitting work orders already runs one.

**CUSTOMIZE: Pre-kit only the fixed sets at your 3PL when**

- A starter box or gift edition keeps the same contents for many cycles or a hard sale window.
- The set sells as one product with its own stock-keeping unit (SKU), so Shopify's bundle rule doesn't apply.
- Each batch clears the 3PL's floor; ShipMonk's is 50 identical orders ([ShipMonk](https://www.shipmonk.com/pricing), October 2026).
- The plan for leftovers is decided before the first unit is built.

## Does a subscription box or bundle-heavy catalog need kitting at all?

A subscription box or bundle-heavy catalog needs kitting only for sets whose contents stay fixed, because how long a box definition lasts decides it, not how many boxes ship. [What kitting is and when a Shopify brand needs it](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/3pl-kitting-vs-selling-components-separately) sets the general test. ShipBob makes the same cut: subscription boxes "suit kitting well since the contents rarely vary between customers and repeat on schedule" ([ShipBob](https://www.shipbob.com/blog/kitting/), October 2026).

**Only a box with fixed contents is a kitting job; every other box is a pick-list job**

| Your box | Where the logic belongs | Where the labor belongs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fixed contents, ships for many cycles | One product with its own stock-keeping unit (SKU) | Pre-kit in batches; this is real kitting |
| Fixed core plus one rotating item | A subscription app's bundle, one component swapped per cycle | Assemble to order, or pre-kit the core only |
| Contents change every cycle | A subscription app's box builder and a dated pick list | Assemble to order from the cycle's build sheet |
| Subscriber chooses the contents | The subscription app, always | Assemble to order, always |

Rows three and four are the common case for a curated box, so neither is a kitting problem: each is a correct pick list on a date.

## What does your 3PL receive when an app sells the box?

Your third-party logistics (3PL) provider receives the box's items as separate order lines, each with its own stock-keeping unit (SKU), from every app we checked. So assembly at order time is the default path for an app-sold box:

- **Shopify Bundles** is free and rated 2.9 stars from about 570 reviews ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/shopify-bundles), October 2026). Shopify says "SKUs are listed for individual items in orders, not for the bundle SKU" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/shopify-bundles), October 2026). It sells one-time bundles only, because bundles aren't compatible with subscriptions ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/eligibility-and-considerations), October 2026).
- **Recharge** displays a box's selected items "as $0.00 items in the order breakdown on Shopify alongside the bundle product with the charge for the order". It advises delaying an order management system (OMS) sync "by a few minutes" so the breakdown can update ([Recharge](https://docs.getrecharge.com/docs/bundles-overview), October 2026).
- **Loop Subscriptions** can check a preset box out as the parent product. Loop then "edits the checkout order to add the child products in the required quantities at zero value" ([Loop Subscriptions Help Center](https://intercom.help/loop-subscriptions/en/articles/12729045-bundles-overview), October 2026).
- **Simple Bundles & Kits** from Freshly Commerce lists "Automatic bundle SKU breakdown" on its free plan. Paid plans run $14, $39 or $149 a month by Shopify plan, and it rates 4.9 stars from about 800 reviews ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/simple-bundles), October 2026).

So set the 3PL's order import to wait for the breakdown, and test how it handles $0.00 lines. [Which plan each subscription app puts its box builder on](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/subscription-box-app-vs-simple-recurring-orders) is a separate answer.

## When does pre-kitting pay for a box brand?

Pre-kitting pays for a box brand in three narrow cases, each a set whose contents are settled before the first unit is built:

1. **A fixed starter box** that every new subscriber receives on cycle one. It ships for years with stable contents, which makes it the best pre-kitting candidate most box brands own.
1. **A gift or seasonal edition** with a known quantity, a hard sale window and a plan for leftovers decided before assembly starts.
1. **A box with heavy assembly**, where batching changes your cost per order. Kitting labor runs $35 to $60 an hour ([Fulfill.com](https://www.fulfill.com/3pl-pricing), October 2026), so batching saves real money when assembly is slow.

Each of these can sell as one product with its own stock-keeping unit (SKU), which keeps it clear of Shopify's rule that bundles aren't compatible with subscriptions ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/eligibility-and-considerations), October 2026). A box that changes every cycle can't, because a stocked kit would need a new SKU and a new leftover pile each month.

## What does subscriber choice cost at the 3PL?

Subscriber choice costs setup at the third-party logistics (3PL) provider, because box assembly runs fastest on batches of identical boxes. ShipMonk kits subscription boxes on an assembly line in batches, each "a unique set of orders that contain the exact same combination of items". It says "each batch must contain at least 50 orders", and smaller batches pay a batching fee it doesn't publish ([ShipMonk](https://www.shipmonk.com/pricing), October 2026).

So a cycle of 400 boxes split across 10 subscriber combinations averages 40 boxes a combination, under that floor (Deploi arithmetic). Swaps and skips cut deeper for pre-built boxes, since every swap invalidates a unit that's already built. That is why choice belongs in the subscription app, with assembly at order time behind it.

## Is a warehouse platform worth buying to get kitting?

A warehouse platform is worth buying when kits are most of what ships, not to get one kitting feature. [Deploi's kitting record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/kitting-at-the-pick-face) scores kits as the core product, such as gift sets and subscription boxes, BUY, because work orders, labor tracking and component forecasting are then the business (October 2026). A brand whose third-party logistics (3PL) provider runs kitting work orders, as ShipBob does ([ShipBob](https://www.shipbob.com/blog/kitting/), October 2026), already buys the work orders through its 3PL; ask what it reports on labor and component stock.

For one feature, a platform is the expensive path. Cin7 Core's $349-a-month Standard plan includes kits, bills of materials and 6,000 sale orders a year; Advanced, at $1,199 a month, includes 120,000, with more available for purchase ([Cin7](https://www.cin7.com/pricing/), October 2026). ShipHero prints no plan price: its listing reads "Free to install. Additional charges may apply." ([ShipHero](https://apps.shopify.com/shiphero), October 2026).

## When is kitting the wrong answer for a box or bundle brand?

Kitting is the wrong answer for a box or bundle brand whenever the set can change after it's built, because a pre-built unit can't follow it.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When next month's box isn't decided.** You can't kit an undecided product, and asking a third-party logistics (3PL) provider to hold capacity for one is how you buy a minimum you don't use.
> - **When subscribers can swap or skip.** Every swap invalidates a pre-built unit. That's the strongest disqualifier, and it's a storefront feature, not a warehouse one.
> - **When the bundles are fixed one-time sets.** Shopify Bundles covers them free, and [Deploi's fixed bundles record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/fixed-bundles-multipacks) scores them WAIT (October 2026).
> - **When the bundles are mix-and-match.** Shopify says "The Shopify Bundles app doesn't support mix-and-match bundles" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/eligibility-and-considerations), October 2026), so an app splits those orders into parts for the 3PL to pick. Where a 3PL feed drives component stock, [Deploi's bundle inventory sync record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/bundle-inventory-sync) scores a custom sync job BUILD (October 2026).
> - **When nobody owns the cycle cutoff.** Pre-kitting widens the gap between the last subscriber edit and the pick list by however long the batch takes. [Whether to pre-kit or assemble at order time](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/3pl-kitting-on-demand-vs-pre-assembled-skus) weighs that lead time.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** 3PLs pitch kitting to box brands as the natural fit, and it is the natural fit for the fixed boxes in the catalog, usually just the starter. The rest of the program wants flexibility, and flexibility is the one thing a stocked kit SKU removes.

**Where box programs break (Deploi judgment).** The cycle cutoff. In our judgment subscribers edit late, operations cut the pick list early, and the gap between those two dates is where the support tickets live. Pre-kitting widens that gap by however long the batch takes, which is the opposite of what a box program needs.

**What this page adds.** The parent defines kitting and when any Shopify brand needs it. This page applies that test to subscription boxes and bundle-heavy catalogs: how long a box definition lasts decides it, what each app actually puts on the order for a 3PL, the batch floor that makes subscriber choice expensive, and the few boxes worth pre-kitting.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify makes bundles compatible with Shopify Subscriptions or other purchase options.
- Recharge or Loop changes how box items land on the Shopify order, which changes what your 3PL imports.
- ShipMonk or your 3PL changes its batch floor, or publishes its batching fee.
- Your box moves from fixed contents to subscriber choice, or back.
- Shopify Bundles adds mix-and-match bundles or stock by location.
