# Is 'high-volume checkout' (10K+ checkouts/minute) ever relevant to a brand still deciding between Advanced and Plus, or is that purely an enterprise-scale concern?

## Short answer

Shopify Plus's high-volume checkout is a drop concern, not an enterprise concern. Shopify quotes “10K+ checkouts per minute” ([shopify.com/plus](https://www.shopify.com/plus), October 2026) and “up to 40K” on the Plus-only pricing row ([shopify.com/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/pricing), October 2026). Steady demand never tests that, because a $1M-a-month store at a $120 average order needs about 70 checkouts a minute, even with a quarter of a day's orders in one minute (Deploi arithmetic).

- **Load-tested checkout (Plus page):** 10K+ checkouts per minute. Shopify's Plus page shows it under “Load-tested checkout”, with “unlimited bandwidth and transactions”, and names no plan ([Shopify, Shopify Plus Platform](https://www.shopify.com/plus))
- **High volume checkout row:** Up to 40K checkouts per minute, Plus only. Tooltip: “Built for flash sales and peak traffic events”. Basic, Grow and Advanced show the row as not included, with no figure ([Shopify, Pricing](https://www.shopify.com/pricing))
- **Shopify's undated peak figure:** 10,978 a minute, labelled two ways. Flash-sale page: peak checkouts per minute, undated. Plus platform page: requests per minute. Shopify's Black Friday Cyber Monday 2025 recap implies about 44,000 orders a minute, online and in-store (Deploi arithmetic) ([Shopify, Built for the biggest flash sales and ecommerce campaigns in the world](https://www.shopify.com/plus/solutions/ecommerce-campaigns-flash-sale-automation); [Shopify, Shopify Plus Platform: The commerce software for fast-growing brands](https://www.shopify.com/plus/platform); [Shopify News, Shopify merchants generate record-breaking $14.6 billion in Black Friday Cyber Monday sales](https://www.shopify.com/news/bfcm-data-2025))
- **A $1M-a-month store in a hard spike:** About 70 checkouts a minute. About 8,300 orders a month at a $120 average order, or 280 a day, if a quarter of a day's orders land in one minute (Deploi arithmetic, assuming the $120 average order) (Deploi arithmetic)

## Deploi's call

High-volume checkout matters to brands whose demand arrives in ninety-second spikes, whatever their revenue, so it is not an enterprise-only concern. The feature is real and Plus-only (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). If your demand is steady, delete the row from your comparison and stop paying attention to it.

**CUSTOMIZE: Leave it out of the Advanced vs. Plus case while**

- Your demand is steady: a hard spike at $1M a month is about 70 checkouts a minute (Deploi arithmetic).
- High-volume checkout is the only Plus row your business case would use.
- Your peak failures came from your theme, apps or third-party scripts, which more checkout capacity does not fix.

**BUY: Count it toward Plus when**

- You run timed drops where buyers arrive in ninety-second spikes.
- Bot protection and Launchpad, Shopify's event scheduler, are on the same drop business case.
- A Plus-only need, such as your own checkout extension or custom Shopify Functions logic, is already funded, so the drop features add to a case that stands.

## What do Shopify's checkouts-per-minute figures actually measure?

The three checkouts-per-minute figures on Shopify's sales pages measure a load test, a Plus capacity ceiling and a platform-wide peak, so none of them is a promise to your own store. Shopify shows all three on the pages that sell Plus, so in [the wider Advanced vs. Plus decision at $1M a month](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/advanced-vs-plus-at-1m-per-month) each one can read like capacity you would buy.

**The three checkout figures on Shopify's sales pages describe a load test, a Plus ceiling and a platform-wide peak**

| Figure | Where Shopify publishes it | What it describes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 10K+ checkouts per minute | Shopify Plus page, under “Load-tested checkout” | A load-tested floor shown on the Plus page, with no plan named |
| Up to 40K checkouts per minute | Pricing page, tooltip on the Plus-only High volume checkout row | A stated ceiling, “Built for flash sales and peak traffic events” |
| 10,978 peak checkouts per minute | Shopify Plus flash-sale page | Presented as a peak “across Shopify”, every store at once, with no date |

Verified October 8, 2026.

Only the 10,978 is presented as a real peak, and it counts all of Shopify at once ([Shopify's flash-sale page](https://www.shopify.com/plus/solutions/ecommerce-campaigns-flash-sale-automation), October 2026).

## Is 10,978 checkouts a minute really Shopify's peak?

Shopify's own 2025 numbers imply a far higher peak than 10,978 checkouts a minute, and Shopify labels the 10,978 two different ways. Its flash-sale page gives the figure no date ([Shopify's flash-sale page](https://www.shopify.com/plus/solutions/ecommerce-campaigns-flash-sale-automation), October 2026).

> **Shopify's own peak figures disagree**
> - **Black Friday Cyber Monday 2025.** Shopify's recap reports peak sales of $5.1 million a minute and a $114.70 average cart, online and in-store ([Shopify News](https://www.shopify.com/news/bfcm-data-2025), December 2025). That is about 44,000 orders a minute if the peak cart matched the average (Deploi arithmetic).
> - **The same number, another label.** Shopify's Plus platform page shows 10,978 as “Requests per minute across Shopify” ([Shopify Plus platform page](https://www.shopify.com/plus/platform), October 2026).

So plan against your own order data, not against 10,978, because Shopify gives that figure no date and two labels.

## How many checkouts a minute does a $1M-a-month store need?

A $1M-a-month store needs about 70 checkouts a minute, even in a hard spike. The arithmetic, at a $120 average order (Deploi arithmetic):

1. $1M a month is roughly 8,300 orders a month.
1. That is about 280 orders a day.
1. If a quarter of a day's orders landed inside one minute, that minute would carry 70 checkouts.

Shopify's load-tested figure of 10K+ checkouts per minute is more than a hundred times that ([Shopify Plus](https://www.shopify.com/plus), October 2026), so steady demand never brings high-volume checkout into the Advanced-to-Plus decision.

## When does high-volume checkout matter for a brand below enterprise scale?

High-volume checkout matters when demand arrives in spikes, whatever the brand's revenue. The tooltip on Shopify's High volume checkout pricing row says what the feature is for: “flash sales and peak traffic events” ([shopify.com/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/pricing), October 2026). That is a shape of demand, not a size of business. Take a $6M-a-year brand that sells 4,000 units in the first ninety seconds of a Friday drop: its checkout profile is genuinely spiky. A $60M-a-year replenishment brand's profile is not. Even the $6M brand's drop is under 2,700 checkouts a minute at one unit an order (Deploi arithmetic). Shopify publishes no Advanced ceiling to set it against.

If drops are your model, treat high-volume checkout as one member of a cluster. Shopify pitches Plus for drops with “higher checkouts per minute, built-in bot protection, and automated event scheduling” ([Shopify Plus flash-sale page](https://www.shopify.com/plus/solutions/ecommerce-campaigns-flash-sale-automation), October 2026). [Bot protection](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/advanced-vs-plus-bot-fraud-protection) is Plus-only ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/bot-protection), October 2026), and so is [Launchpad](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/launchpad-flash-sales-worth-plus-upgrade), the event scheduler ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/launchpad), October 2026). Three Plus-gated capabilities pointing at the same business behavior make a reasonable case together, because each one covers a different part of a drop. High-volume checkout by itself makes none.

## What checkout throughput does Shopify publish for Advanced?

Shopify publishes no checkout throughput figure for Basic, Grow or Advanced. The pricing page marks High volume checkout as not included below Plus and gives those plans no number ([shopify.com/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/pricing), October 2026). The Advanced plan page gives no capacity figure either ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/intro-to-shopify/pricing-plans/plans-features/shopify-advanced-plan), October 2026). The 10K+ load-test figure on Shopify's Plus page names no plan ([Shopify Plus](https://www.shopify.com/plus), October 2026). Even Shopify's Storefront application programming interface (API), which custom-built (headless) storefronts use, gives no number. Its documentation says only that checkout creation is “Throttled per minute”, with no split by plan ([Shopify developer docs](https://shopify.dev/docs/api/storefront/latest), October 2026). So treat any specific Advanced checkouts-per-minute number as unpublished, and ask where it comes from.

> **What we will not tell you**
> We will not tell you what throughput your Advanced store gets, because Shopify does not publish it. We also will not present the undated 10,978 a minute on Shopify's flash-sale page as a capacity promise to you, because it is a platform figure, not a commitment.

## When should high-volume checkout stay out of the Advanced vs. Plus decision?

High-volume checkout should stay out of the Advanced vs. Plus decision when demand is steady, when the row stands alone, or when your outages start outside checkout.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When you do not run timed releases.** Steady demand never tests high-volume checkout, because a hard spike at $1M a month is about 70 checkouts a minute (Deploi arithmetic).
> - **When it appears alone on the business case.** High-volume checkout is a supporting fact for a drop-driven brand, never a lead one. The lead reasons are Plus-only checkout extensions and custom Shopify Functions ([Deploi Build vs. Buy](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/plus-vs-advanced-checkout-features), October 2026).
> - **When your last outage was not a checkout outage.** A theme, app or third-party script failure stays yours on any plan, so more checkout capacity does not fix it. Check [how Shopify's uptime figures treat theme and app failures](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/advanced-vs-plus-uptime-priority-support) before you blame capacity.

## Deploi's point of view

**What we've seen.** When a store falls over during a launch, the checkout is rarely what fell over. The failure is upstream: a collection page doing uncached work, a theme app embed calling a third party synchronously, an inventory app rate-limiting itself. Buying checkout capacity does not fix any of those, and believing you have bought resilience makes the real work less likely to get funded.

**Where we disagree.** The standard framing is that high-volume checkout is an enterprise concern and therefore irrelevant to mid-market buyers. That is the right conclusion from the wrong reasoning. It is irrelevant to most mid-market buyers because their demand is smooth, and it is highly relevant to a small, non-enterprise group whose demand is not. Revenue is the wrong axis.

**What this page adds.** that the three checkout-per-minute figures on Shopify's sales pages measure different things (a load test, a Plus ceiling and a platform-wide peak), that none of them is a guaranteed per-store figure, that the 10,978 peak sits in tension with Shopify's own Black Friday Cyber Monday 2025 numbers, and that Shopify publishes no checkout throughput figure for Advanced.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify publishes a checkout throughput figure for Basic, Grow or Advanced.
- Shopify changes the High volume checkout tooltip's “up to 40K checkouts per minute”, or opens the row below Plus.
- Shopify dates or updates the 10,978 peak on its flash-sale page.
- Your business moves to timed drops or limited releases.
- Bot protection or Launchpad moves below Plus, which would break up the drop cluster.
