# What counts as an 'AI-channel' sale in Shopify's reporting? Does it include a customer who just researched on ChatGPT but bought later through Google?

## Short answer

Shopify counts an AI-channel sale two ways, and by default a ChatGPT-researched sale bought through a Google click goes to Google, because marketing reports credit the last click that is not a direct visit ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/marketing-reports), October 2026). The agentic storefronts report, Shopify's report on its AI sales channels, sums referral and in-chat checkout sales by channel, Shopify's Shop app included ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/agentic-home), October 2026).

- **What Shopify's AI report counts:** Referral sales plus direct-checkout sales. Reported for each AI channel; the Shop app's sessions, referrals and sales are included in the same report (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). ([Shopify Help Center, Managing agentic storefronts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/agentic-home))
- **Default marketing attribution:** Last non-direct click, 30-day reset. All credit to the last channel before purchase, excluding direct visits; the first referrer resets after 30 days without a purchase (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). ([Shopify Help Center, Marketing reports](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/marketing-reports))
- **Models that can credit ChatGPT:** 3 of Shopify's 5 attribution models. First click, linear and any click can credit a ChatGPT click that reached your store; last non-direct click and last click give a sale ending on a Google click to Google (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). ([Shopify Help Center, Marketing reports](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/marketing-reports))
- **Analytics pixels in AI checkouts:** Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire. In direct checkouts on Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, only server-to-server checkout started and completed events fire (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). ([Shopify Help Center, Selling on Google AI Mode and Gemini](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/google); [Shopify Help Center, Selling on Microsoft Copilot](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/microsoft); [Shopify Help Center, Selling on Meta](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/meta))

## Deploi's call

A sale researched on ChatGPT and bought through a Google click is Google's under Shopify's default model, so report the AI-channel number as a floor and say so in the same sentence every time. The default last non-direct click model, which credits the last channel other than a direct visit, is correct for budget decisions and structurally blind to discovery.

**CUSTOMIZE: Set up labelled AI-channel views now when**

- Your dashboards show one AI-channel figure with no definition beside it.
- Your agentic storefronts total mixes sales from the Shop app, Shopify's shopping app, with ChatGPT's ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/agentic-home), October 2026).
- Your buyers research for longer than 30 days, so the referrer reset drops ChatGPT from first click ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/marketing-reports), October 2026).
- Deploi's [readiness decision record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/agentic-commerce-readiness-feeds) says to instrument AI-referrer traffic now, so the next decision has a denominator.

**WAIT: Buy no AI attribution model while**

- AI referrals sit near 0.10% of sessions in the only independent Shopify-only sample we found ([Ethercycle](https://ethercycle.com/pages/state-of-ecommerce-2026), September 2026).
- Any model would have to guess at ChatGPT app clicks that carry no tag and no referrer.
- Shopify's Attribution menu already adds first click, linear (equal credit to each click) and any click (full credit to each channel clicked) models to any report that shows sales by referring channel ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/marketing-reports), October 2026).

## How does Shopify define an AI-channel sale?

Shopify defines an AI-channel sale in two separate reports, and the word channel means something different in each. Every AI-channel sales figure in your Shopify admin comes from one of the two, and [the agentic commerce timeline for a $20M to $100M brand](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/agentic-commerce-timeline-20m-100m-brands) shows what those figures can and cannot tell you.

**1. The agentic storefronts report.** Shopify reports sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion for each AI channel, and "Sales data is an aggregate of referral-based sales and sales that happen through direct checkout" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/agentic-home), October 2026). ChatGPT sales are referrals: buyers pay on your own checkout, and orders arrive "with ChatGPT referral attribution" ([Shopify](https://www.shopify.com/news/agentic-commerce-momentum), March 2026). Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta can close the sale in a Shopify-powered direct checkout ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts), October 2026). The same report counts "sessions, referrals, and sales from the Shop app," Shopify's own shopping app. Shopify does not say which visit earns the credit when a buyer returns through another source.

**2. The marketing reports.** Shopify applies an attribution model to online store sessions, ChatGPT referrals included. The default, last non-direct click, gives all the credit to the last channel before the purchase, excluding direct visits ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/marketing-reports), October 2026).

So under the default, ChatGPT research followed by a Google click is a Google sale.

## Does any Shopify attribution model credit ChatGPT for a sale that ends on Google?

Yes: three of Shopify's five attribution models can credit ChatGPT for a sale that ends on Google, but only for a ChatGPT click recorded at your store.

**Three of Shopify's five attribution models can credit ChatGPT when its click starts the journey and a Google click ends it**

| Attribution model | Shopify's rule | Who gets the sale |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Last non-direct click (default) | All credit to the last channel, excluding direct visits | Google |
| Last click | All credit to the last channel, including direct visits | Google |
| First click | All credit to the first channel, including direct visits | ChatGPT, if the purchase came within 30 days of its visit |
| Linear | Equal credit to each click that contributed, including direct visits | ChatGPT and Google share it |
| Any click | 100% credit to each channel the customer clicked | ChatGPT and Google each get all of it |

First click gives the sale to Direct instead when the ChatGPT click came from ChatGPT's app without a tag, because app clicks send no referrer and untagged ones land in Direct ([Ethercycle](https://ethercycle.com/pages/state-of-ecommerce-2026), September 2026). The Google path matters too: a Google search click counts as organic or paid search, while a purchase in Google AI Mode's direct checkout is an AI-channel sale for Google AI Mode and Gemini, not ChatGPT ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/agentic-home), October 2026).

## Why is Shopify's AI-channel number a floor rather than an estimate?

Shopify's AI-channel number, read one AI channel at a time, is a floor because four effects push AI's measured share down, and no report setting fixes them.

1. **Untagged clicks.** In an August 2026 test by Ethercycle, a Shopify agency, 66% of ChatGPT's links carried the tag utm_source=chatgpt.com. ChatGPT's apps send no referrer, so their untagged clicks land in Direct. Ethercycle puts true ChatGPT volume at 1.1x to 1.6x what dashboards report ([Ethercycle](https://ethercycle.com/pages/state-of-ecommerce-2026), September 2026). [The traffic each AI engine sends Shopify stores](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/perplexity-vs-chatgpt-vs-gemini-traffic-and-sales) is its own answer.
1. **Research with no click.** The same study notes that "when a chatbot recommends a brand and the shopper Googles it later, that visit credits search."
1. **Google AI Overviews.** Shopify says AI Overviews referrals are "classified as organic search in standard analytics rather than as AI" ([Shopify](https://www.shopify.com/enterprise/blog/ai-search-insights), May 2026).
1. **Time and devices.** A buyer returning more than 30 days after a ChatGPT visit loses that first referrer ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/marketing-reports), October 2026). Shopify's visit history relies on cookie tracking, and blocked cookies leave an order with no source ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/managing-orders/analytics/conversion-summary), October 2026). Cookies stay in one browser, so in Deploi's reading a buyer who researches on a phone and buys on a laptop starts a fresh visit history.

So treat each channel's number as the smallest true value, and never build a case on the gap you imagine above it.

## How do you size ChatGPT's research contribution without inventing a number?

You size ChatGPT's research contribution with four labelled views and one comparison to skip, because no single Shopify report sees the whole journey.

- **Run first click beside the default for one quarter.** Keep last non-direct click as the default, because every historical target was set against it. Shopify deprecated its Attribution model comparison report, so run the comparison in the Marketing top channel performance report ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/shopify-reports/report-types/default-reports/marketing-reports), October 2026) and label both figures.
- **Read the agentic storefronts report one channel at a time.** That report's totals include Shopify's Shop app ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/agentic-home), October 2026), so ChatGPT's figure is the ChatGPT line, not the total. [What else Shopify's agentic reporting shows](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/search-intelligence-vs-manual-chatgpt-testing) is its own answer.
- **Open the conversion summary on a sample of orders.** The order page shows "The origin of the customer's first visit to your store" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/managing-orders/analytics/conversion-summary), October 2026), unless cookies were blocked.
- **Add a post-purchase survey question** with a named option for AI assistants. It is self-reported and imperfect, and it is the only instrument that sees a cross-device journey.
- **Do not reconcile Shopify against Google Analytics 4 (GA4) for AI channels.** "Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire" in direct checkouts on Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta ([Google](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/google), [Copilot](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/microsoft) and [Meta](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/meta) help pages, October 2026), so GA4 never sees those sales.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** The AI-attribution tool category sells a fix for this, usually in the form of a proprietary model that assigns credit the platform's own reporting will not. We would not buy that at this volume. When a channel sits near a tenth of a percent of sessions, the cost of modelling it exceeds anything the model could change about a decision.

**What we tell clients to do first.** write down which of the two definitions your dashboard is using before anyone argues about the number. A common disagreement we get pulled into is two people reading different reports and assuming they are reading the same one.

**What this page adds.** that Shopify answers this question in two reports with two meanings of channel, that its agentic storefronts report counts the Shop app, which of Shopify's attribution models can credit ChatGPT for a sale that ends on Google, and the four leakage effects that make the reported figure a floor.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify publishes how its agentic storefronts report credits a referral-based sale when the buyer returns through another source.
- Shopify changes the default last non-direct click model or the 30-day referrer reset.
- Shopify separates the Shop app from the AI channels in agentic storefronts reporting.
- ChatGPT's apps start sending a referrer, or OpenAI tags every outbound link.
- Google labels AI Overviews or AI Mode referrals separately from organic search in analytics.
- Shopify lets Google Analytics or custom pixels fire in AI-channel direct checkouts.
