# Does a Shopify brand need separate carrier accounts (FedEx, DHL, UPS) per country, or does one global account cover international shipping?

## Short answer

A Shopify brand never needs a carrier account per destination country; new origins can add them. UPS and FedEx accounts show rates at "fulfillment locations worldwide" but buy Shopify labels only from a US-based location ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-rates/third-party-carrier-calculated-shipping/carrier-accounts), October 2026). USPS, Canada Post and Australia Post accounts work only in their own countries, so other origins need another carrier.

- **UPS and FedEx accounts at checkout:** Rates from fulfillment locations worldwide. Buying labels in the Shopify admin with your own UPS or FedEx account needs a US-based fulfillment location. ([Shopify Help Center, Third-party shipping carrier accounts and availability](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-rates/third-party-carrier-calculated-shipping/carrier-accounts))
- **USPS, Canada Post, Australia Post:** Home-country fulfillment locations only. Each postal operator's account shows rates only for fulfillment locations in its own country. DHL isn't among the carrier accounts Shopify connects for checkout rates. ([Shopify Help Center, Third-party shipping carrier accounts and availability](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-rates/third-party-carrier-calculated-shipping/carrier-accounts))
- **Carrier-calculated shipping by plan:** Advanced and Plus; Grow for a fee. Grow stores add it for a monthly fee or with annual billing; Shopify lists it as not available on other plans. ([Shopify Help Center, Third-party shipping carrier accounts and availability](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-rates/third-party-carrier-calculated-shipping/carrier-accounts); [Shopify Help Center, Third-party carrier-calculated shipping](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-rates/third-party-carrier-calculated-shipping))
- **DDP labels in the Shopify admin:** Canada Post to the US, DHL Express, DHL Ecommerce. DHL Express Canada too. With any other carrier, Shopify sells no label for an order whose duties were collected at checkout: buy it elsewhere or refund the order. ## Deploi's call

Carrier accounts follow origins, not destinations, so count warehouses, not markets. One integrator account covers export to 20 countries; a second warehouse in one of them needs its own account, unless the carrier bills that warehouse's shipments to an account at home, as DHL Express does on a US Import Express account. Most of the confusion in this question comes from the word "international" hiding which end of the shipment changed.

**WAIT: Keep one carrier account while**

- You're adding destinations, not origins: Shopify connects UPS and FedEx accounts for checkout rates at "fulfillment locations worldwide" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-rates/third-party-carrier-calculated-shipping/carrier-accounts), October 2026).
- Your warehouse abroad is a third-party logistics (3PL) provider shipping on its own carrier contracts.
- Nobody has measured your current account's effective discount, so a split could drop both accounts below a tier.

**BUILD: Hold your own account at a new origin when**

- A second warehouse ships enough to earn its own negotiated rates; [our Easyship and native rates record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/easyship-vs-native-intl-shipping) scores owned contracts BUILD, shown through native carrier-calculated rates (October 2026).
- Your carrier won't bill that origin's shipments to an account at home; DHL Express bills them to a US Import Express account ([DHL](https://www.dhl.com/discover/en-us/ship-with-dhl/import-with-dhl/dhl-import-services), October 2026).

## Do you need a carrier account for every country you ship to?

You don't need a carrier account for every country you ship to, because carrier accounts follow where a parcel starts, not where it lands. Shopify splits the question in two, with different country rules for each: showing a carrier's rate at checkout, and buying its label ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-rates/third-party-carrier-calculated-shipping/carrier-accounts), October 2026). So a brand exporting from one warehouse to 20 countries can quote and ship all of them on one integrator account, such as UPS or FedEx. The account question reopens only when a second warehouse, which is a second origin, starts shipping. Mixing up rates with labels, and destinations with origins, is how this question produces setup costs nobody needed.

## Which carrier accounts show rates at checkout, and from where?

UPS and FedEx accounts show rates at checkout from fulfillment locations worldwide, while USPS, Canada Post and Australia Post accounts work only from their own countries ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-rates/third-party-carrier-calculated-shipping/carrier-accounts), October 2026). That feature is third-party carrier-calculated shipping (CCS), which is "available on Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus plans"; Grow stores add it "for an additional monthly fee or by switching to annual billing" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-rates/third-party-carrier-calculated-shipping), October 2026). DHL isn't among the carrier accounts Shopify connects for checkout rates.

**UPS and FedEx accounts show rates at locations worldwide but buy Shopify labels only from the US; postal accounts stay in their own country**

| Carrier account | Rates at checkout | Labels in the Shopify admin with that account |
| --- | --- | --- |
| UPS | Fulfillment locations worldwide | Only from a US-based fulfillment location |
| FedEx | Fulfillment locations worldwide | Only from a US-based fulfillment location |
| USPS | US-based fulfillment locations | Not listed |
| Canada Post | Canadian-based fulfillment locations | Yes |
| Australia Post | Australia-based fulfillment locations | Yes |

So the global integrators travel for rates and the postal operators don't. A UK warehouse can show UPS rates at checkout through a connected UPS account, but its UPS labels come from the carrier's own tools or a third-party logistics (3PL) system, not the Shopify admin.

## From which countries can you buy labels through Shopify's own carrier accounts?

You can buy labels through Shopify's own carrier accounts, with no account of yours, from fulfillment locations in 10 countries ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/fulfilling-orders/shipping-labels/setup), October 2026):

- **United States:** USPS, UPS, DHL Ecommerce, DHL Express and FedEx.
- **Canada:** Canada Post, DHL Express Canada, Purolator (domestic only) and UPS.
- **United Kingdom:** Evri, DPD (Dynamic Parcel Distribution), Royal Mail, InPost UK and DHL Express Europe.
- **Elsewhere:** Australia Post in Australia; local carriers and DHL Express Europe in France, Germany, Italy and Spain; and DHL Ecommerce alone in the Netherlands (domestic labels) and Poland (labels to other EU countries).

Two rules narrow that list. Shopify says that "for some carriers your store needs to be based in the same country as the fulfillment location". Evri and DPD need a UK fulfillment location and a UK store address, so a US-registered brand with a UK warehouse can't buy them in Shopify. And if you collect duties at checkout, Shopify sells delivered duty paid (DDP) labels only for Canada Post to US destinations, DHL Express, DHL Express Canada and DHL Ecommerce. With any other carrier, "you can't purchase a label for orders where duties have been collected" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/fulfilling-orders/shipping-labels/setup), October 2026).

## How many carrier accounts does a brand shipping to 20 countries end up holding?

A brand shipping to 20 countries ends up holding one carrier account per origin at most, and none per destination:

1. **One integrator account at home.** DHL Express, FedEx or UPS, negotiated once, covers export from your home warehouse to every destination.
1. **One decision per additional origin.** A second warehouse needs either a local account with the carrier's entity there, or a carrier that bills that origin's shipments to an account at home. DHL Express, for one, bills shipments "moving between two countries outside of the U.S., but billed in the U.S." to a US Import Express account ([DHL](https://www.dhl.com/discover/en-us/ship-with-dhl/import-with-dhl/dhl-import-services), October 2026). Ask each carrier before you open anything.
1. **Nothing per destination.** Twenty destinations don't need twenty accounts.
1. **A delivered duty paid (DDP) service** on whichever account ships the parcel, if you collect duties at checkout, which [our duties and import taxes record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/duties-and-import-taxes) treats as a per-market policy (October 2026).

Our judgment: a new account at a new origin negotiates from that origin's volume, not your total, so price it before you split volume. Shippers without contracts can rent carrier access instead, which [our Easyship and native rates record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/easyship-vs-native-intl-shipping) scores BUY for stores shipping 5% to 15% of orders abroad with no owned contracts (October 2026).

## Where does Managed Markets change the carrier account question?

Managed Markets replaces your own carrier accounts on its international orders with its own label set, so the account question shrinks to your other shipping. Businesses based in Canada or the UK "can purchase only DHL Express or FedEx shipping labels" for Managed Markets orders, and US businesses add DHL Ecommerce and UPS ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/managed-markets/shipping/requirements-and-considerations), October 2026). Shopify's overview page leaves UPS out of that list ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/managed-markets/overview), October 2026). Managed Markets "isn't compatible with UPS accounts that are connected to your Shopify admin", and shipping on your own negotiated rates means you "don't get the benefits that Global-e acting as your merchant of record provides" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/managed-markets/shipping/requirements-and-considerations), October 2026). So a negotiated international contract and Managed Markets pull in opposite directions. [Whether Managed Markets is worth its fee under $5M of international sales](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/managed-markets-worth-it-under-5m-international-sales) and [what customers notice on a Managed Markets parcel against a third-party logistics (3PL) warehouse abroad](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/managed-markets-vs-diy-3pl-delivery-experience) carry the rest of that choice.

## When should you not open another carrier account?

You shouldn't open another carrier account when nothing about your origins has changed, or when the volume to earn its discount isn't there yet.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When you're adding destinations, not origins.** Nothing changes. Resist the carrier rep who says otherwise.
> - **When the new origin is a third-party logistics (3PL) provider with its own contracted rates.** Many 3PLs ship on their own accounts, which in our judgment usually beats your unnegotiated new-country rate. Check before you open anything.
> - **When you haven't measured your current account's discount.** Splitting volume across two accounts can push both below a discount tier, a real cost that shows up two invoices later.
> - **When Managed Markets ships your international orders.** Those orders ship on Managed Markets labels, and your own negotiated rates forfeit Global-e's benefits as merchant of record ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/managed-markets/shipping/requirements-and-considerations), October 2026), so a new account buys nothing for them.

## Deploi's point of view

**What we've seen.** The expensive version of this mistake is opening accounts before the volume exists, then discovering the split has dropped the home account out of its discount band. We ask for the current account's effective discount before anyone signs a second one, because it is the number that decides whether the split is worth it.

**Where we disagree.** Carrier and 3PL sales conversations frame multi-account setups as a prerequisite for international growth. The Shopify documentation does not support that. UPS and FedEx accounts are explicitly good for "fulfillment locations worldwide", and the real gate is national postal operators and label purchase, neither of which a second account fixes.

**What this page adds.** The parent asks whether delivered duty paid (DDP) shipping to 20-plus countries works without a merchant-of-record partner. This page answers the carrier side: Shopify splits rate display from label purchase with different country rules for each, the national postal operators are the accounts that won't travel, some carriers bill a foreign origin's shipments to an account at home, and the account count follows warehouses, not markets.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify lets connected UPS or FedEx accounts buy labels from fulfillment locations outside the US.
- Shopify adds DHL to the carrier accounts it connects for checkout rates.
- Shopify changes which plans include third-party carrier-calculated shipping.
- Shopify adds carriers or countries to its own labels, or drops the store-address rule for Evri and DPD.
- Your carrier changes whether it bills shipments between two foreign countries to an account at home.
