# Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout even still live for Shopify merchants, given reports it was quietly pulled in March 2026? Yes, OpenAI pulled back from ChatGPT Instant Checkout in March 2026, but on the record rather than quietly. The reports were right about the event and wrong about the conclusion: OpenAI changed where the buyer pays, not whether ChatGPT sends buyers. That split shapes [the agentic commerce timeline for a $20M to $100M brand](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/agentic-commerce-timeline-20m-100m-brands). **Instant Checkout** was OpenAI's in-chat purchase flow, built so a buyer could "complete the purchase without ever leaving the chat" ([OpenAI's launch post](https://openai.com/index/buy-it-in-chatgpt/), September 2025). Shopify told [Modern Retail](https://www.modernretail.co/technology/shopify-says-purchases-are-coming-inside-chatgpt-through-agentic-storefronts-as-openai-retreats-on-instant-checkout/) that its pilot with OpenAI let buyers pay inside ChatGPT through Instant Checkout, powered by Shopify Payments (March 2026). On 6 March 2026 an OpenAI spokesperson told [Digital Commerce 360](https://www.digitalcommerce360.com/2026/03/06/openai-shifts-checkout-plans-agentic-commerce-strategy/) that "Instant Checkout is moving to Apps." OpenAI's [shopping help article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490-shopping-with-chatgpt-search) still says ChatGPT may show an Instant Checkout option "for some eligible products and merchants" (October 2026). Shopify offers no ChatGPT direct checkout setting, so a Shopify store still cannot offer Instant Checkout. ## How do Shopify merchants sell in ChatGPT now? Shopify merchants sell in ChatGPT through Shopify's ChatGPT channel, which is live, active by default for eligible stores, and ends every sale on the merchant's own checkout. Shopify calls the channel "a discovery-focused referrer platform" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/chatgpt), October 2026). Shopify says ChatGPT users "complete their purchase on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web." The same Shopify page rules out Instant Checkout, OpenAI's in-chat payment flow, for a Shopify store: there is "no option to activate or deactivate a ChatGPT direct checkout setting in your Shopify admin." Product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, the product feed Shopify shares with AI channels such as ChatGPT. Catalog lists each product "with their title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes" ([Shopify's Catalog page](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/products), October 2026). OpenAI confirms that Shopify product data "is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog" ([OpenAI's shopping help](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490-shopping-with-chatgpt-search), October 2026). ## What changed for a Shopify merchant when checkout left ChatGPT? Your store qualifies for Shopify's ChatGPT channel when it meets four requirements, and it can be based outside the United States ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/chatgpt), October 2026): - Your store sells to customers in the United States. - Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, the product feed Shopify shares with AI channels such as ChatGPT. No: for a Shopify brand today, a ChatGPT app is not a route back to Instant Checkout, OpenAI's in-chat payment flow, and most Shopify brands do not need one. ChatGPT apps are merchant-built experiences that run inside ChatGPT. OpenAI calls them "optional" and "best suited for larger merchants who want more control over the shopping and purchase experience" ([chatgpt.com/merchants](https://chatgpt.com/merchants/), October 2026). Shopify told [Digital Commerce 360](https://www.digitalcommerce360.com/2026/03/17/shopify-integration-with-chatgpt-changes/) that "Shopify merchants do not need to build apps for ChatGPT to participate in commerce" (March 2026). Reports say agentic commerce stalled because they use one phrase for two things: finishing a purchase inside an AI chat, and getting products found by AI. OpenAI retreated on the first inside ChatGPT. Shopify kept the second on by default across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta ([Shopify's channel list](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts), October 2026). The evidence actually points the other way on Shopify specifically, because Shopify runs in-chat checkout on three other surfaces, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, at no platform fee (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). One vendor's retreat from one flow is not a category verdict. **What we tell clients to do first.** confirm the channel state in your own admin under Sales channels, then check whether the four ChatGPT requirements are actually met.
