# Do comparison pages (us vs a specific competitor) genuinely help AI engines recommend us over that competitor?

## Short answer

Competitor comparison pages help AI engines recommend you only to buyers you suit, in Deploi's judgment. They must read as a reference, not sales collateral. Google's review guidance names "a merchant who guides people between competing products" as a reviewer ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/ecommerce/write-high-quality-reviews), October 2026). It asks for "the benefits and drawbacks", so an honest loss belongs on the page.

- **Who Google counts as a reviewer:** Includes a merchant comparing competitors. Google's review guidance names "a merchant who guides people between competing products" and asks for benefits and drawbacks from original research (Google Search Central, October 2026). ([Google Search Central, Write high quality reviews](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/ecommerce/write-high-quality-reviews))
- **Where Google says AI Mode helps most:** Complex comparisons and comparing options. Google: AI Mode is "particularly helpful" where further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons are needed, with links to supporting websites (Google Search Central, October 2026). ([Google Search Central, AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features))
- **Naming a competitor in the US:** Encouraged when truthful and non-deceptive. The FTC's comparative advertising policy statement of August 1979 encourages naming competitors and calls truthful comparisons important consumer information (FTC, current October 2026). ([Federal Trade Commission, Statement of Policy Regarding Comparative Advertising](https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/statement-policy-regarding-comparative-advertising))
- **Record verdict for comparison content:** CUSTOMIZE when a rival is cited and you are not. Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record: the lever is citable content, comparisons included, on the pages engines retrieve, measured by a prompt panel (October 2026). ## Deploi's call

Comparison pages work, and most of them are built wrong. The one design choice that changes the outcome is including a criterion where you lose.

**CUSTOMIZE: Publish a named-competitor comparison when**

- A prompt check, running your buyers' questions in each AI engine, shows the competitor named where you are not. [Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/ai-answer-engine-visibility-geo-aeo) scores comparison content CUSTOMIZE in that case (October 2026).
- You can state at least one criterion the competitor wins, because Google's review guidance asks for "the benefits and drawbacks" ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/ecommerce/write-high-quality-reviews), October 2026).
- Someone owns a quarterly re-check of every competitor figure on the page.
- Counsel has reviewed each comparative claim, each use of a competitor's mark and the evidence behind them.

**WAIT: Hold the page while**

- Your team will not publish a criterion it loses.
- Competitor prices or specs on the page would go undated.
- No buyer prompt names you and the competitor together, so the page would answer a question nobody asks.

## Do AI engines use a comparison page when a shopper asks "X or Y"?

Yes, AI engines can draw on a comparison page when a shopper asks "X or Y", and Google names comparisons among the questions its AI Mode handles best. Google says AI Mode is "particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed," including "comparing options" ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), October 2026). Google's generative AI features are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems" ([Google's AI search guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide), October 2026), so a comparison page competes for those questions like any other page.

A comparison page answers what [one product page for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/product-page-structure-chatgpt-vs-perplexity-vs-gemini) cannot, because a question about two brands spans more than one product. No engine documents a reward for the comparison format itself. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks web results on "multiple factors" it does not name, and that "Placement is not guaranteed" ([OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt), October 2026).

## What does a comparison page need before an engine can use it?

In Deploi's judgment, a comparison page needs four things before a buyer or an engine can use it, and Google's review guidance names three of them. That guidance counts "a merchant who guides people between competing products" as a review writer ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/ecommerce/write-high-quality-reviews), October 2026).

- **Criteria a buyer actually weighs, not the ones you win on.** Google asks reviews to "Focus on the most important decision-making factors."
- **At least one criterion where the competitor wins, stated plainly.** Google asks reviews to "Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of something, based on your own original research."
- **A verdict that names the buyer profile,** such as "choose X if you run multi-location inventory; choose Y below 500 products." Google asks reviews to "explain which might be best for certain uses or circumstances."
- **Dated figures.** Competitor prices change, and an undated figure gives a buyer no way to tell it is stale.

A feature-checkmark grid where your column is full and theirs is empty fails all four tests, so in our judgment it carries nothing a buyer or an engine can use.

## Can an honest comparison page get your competitor recommended instead?

Yes: an honest comparison page can get your competitor recommended to the buyers it suits better, and that is the cost of being believed by the rest. Google's review guidance asks for "the benefits and drawbacks" of each option ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/ecommerce/write-high-quality-reviews), October 2026), so a page that admits a loss is the page Google describes. In Deploi's judgment, an AI answer that draws on your page will name the competitor for the profile where it wins, and you for the profile where you win.

That trade is the whole design decision, which means it belongs with whoever owns the brand, not only with marketing. A comparison page that never loses reads as an advertisement. In our judgment it also trains a buyer to discount everything else on the domain, so a dishonest comparison page is worse than none.

## What legal exposure does naming a competitor carry?

Naming a competitor carries legal exposure mainly through claims that are false, misleading, untested or stale; in Canada, using a competitor's registered trademark carries a risk of its own. In the US, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) "encourages the naming of, or reference to competitors," and calls comparisons that are "truthful and non-deceptive" "a source of important information to consumers" ([FTC policy statement](https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/statement-policy-regarding-comparative-advertising), August 1979, current as of October 2026).

In Canada, the Competition Act covers "All representations, in any form whatsoever, that are false or misleading in a material respect." Courts weigh the "general impression" a claim conveys as well as its literal meaning ([Competition Bureau Canada](https://competition-bureau.canada.ca/en/deceptive-marketing-practices/types-deceptive-marketing-practices/false-or-misleading-representations-and-deceptive-marketing-practices), October 2026). Section 74.01(1)(b) of the Act also covers performance claims "not based on an adequate and proper test," and the proof lies with the advertiser ([Justice Laws Website](https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/c-34/section-74.01.html), October 2026). Section 22 of the Trademarks Act bars using a competitor's registered trademark in a way "likely to have the effect of depreciating the value of the goodwill attaching thereto" ([Justice Laws Website](https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/t-13/section-22.html), October 2026). Canada's Federal Court applied section 22 to comparative battery packaging in 2023 ([a Gowling law-firm report](https://gowlingwlg.com/en/insights-resources/articles/2023/trademark-rules-for-comparative-advertising), November 2023).

Competitor prices go stale while the page keeps asserting them, so have counsel review each comparative claim and each use of a competitor's mark. Keep the test results and dated evidence, and re-verify every competitor figure quarterly.

## When should you not build a comparison page?

You should not build a named-competitor comparison page when you cannot keep it honest, current and wanted.

> **When a comparison page is the wrong move**
> - **When you will not publish a criterion you lose.** The page becomes sales collateral, and buyers read it as one.
> - **When nobody owns the quarterly re-check.** Competitor figures go stale, so the page turns from a credibility asset into a liability.
> - **When buyers never compare you with that competitor.** Run a prompt check first, asking your buyers' questions in each AI engine. [Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/ai-answer-engine-visibility-geo-aeo) scores citable content, comparison pages included, CUSTOMIZE when a competitor is cited where you are not, and WAIT when none is (October 2026).
> - **When the plan is dozens of templated "us vs. X" pages.** Google says "a high quantity of pages doesn't make a website higher quality or more relevant to users" ([Google's AI search guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide), October 2026), and templated pages share the [scaled content abuse risk of AI-written page volume](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/ai-generated-blogs-help-or-hurt-ai-search).
> - **When the question spans a whole category, not one rival.** [A category buyer's guide](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/category-buyers-guide-vs-product-page-optimization) answers it better.

## Deploi's point of view

**What we've seen.** Comparison pages age badly and silently. Competitor pricing moves, the page keeps asserting the old number, and the page that was your credibility asset becomes the reason a buyer stops trusting the site. A dated re-verify lane is part of the build, not a nice-to-have.

**Where we disagree.** Marketing treats the comparison page as a bottom-funnel conversion asset and writes it to win. In our judgment, engines treat it as a reference document. Those two briefs produce different pages, and we expect only the reference to get cited.

**What this page adds.** the specific structural requirements (criteria table, an admitted loss, a profiled verdict, dated figures) that decide whether the page is usable.

## When this answer changes

- Google changes its review guidance or how AI Mode handles comparison questions.
- OpenAI or Perplexity documents how ChatGPT or Perplexity choose sources for product comparisons.
- The competitor changes a price, plan or feature the page compares.
- The FTC or Canada's Competition Bureau issues new guidance on comparative claims, or a Canadian court rules again on section 22 of the Trademarks Act.
- A prompt panel shows the competitor recommended for a buyer profile your page says you win.
