# How do I prioritize which Conversions API to implement first (Meta, Google, or TikTok) if I can only build one this quarter?

## Short answer

Meta, TikTok and Google take Shopify conversions server to server from their own apps, so none is the first build. Meta's Conversions API (application programming interface) and TikTok's Events API run at Enhanced or Maximum data sharing ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/analyze-marketing/meta-data-sharing); [TikTok Business Help Center](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/data-sharing-tiktok-app-shopify), October 2026). The Google & YouTube app sends purchases automatically ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/15496063), October 2026).

- **Meta Conversions API on Shopify:** On at Enhanced or Maximum data sharing. At Enhanced, "your store uses Facebook's Conversions API as well as the Meta pixel" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Standard is the browser pixel alone. ([Shopify Help Center, Facebook data sharing](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/analyze-marketing/meta-data-sharing))
- **TikTok Events API on Shopify:** On at Enhanced or Maximum data sharing. Enhanced uses TikTok Pixel, Events API and Advanced Matching; Standard uses the Pixel alone (TikTok Business Help Center, October 2026). ([TikTok Business Help Center, About Data Sharing on TikTok App on Shopify](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/data-sharing-tiktok-app-shopify))
- **Google purchases on Shopify:** Sent server to server by the Google & YouTube app. The Data Manager import activates automatically once the app is set up, and carries only the Checkout completed purchase event for now (Google Ads Help, October 2026). ([Google Ads Help, Shopify](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/15496063))
- **Google enhanced conversions:** A Turn on setting in the Google & YouTube app. It adds hashed first-party customer data to Google's conversion tags; the app asks you to agree to Google's customer data terms (Google Ads Help, October 2026). ([Google Ads Help, Set up conversion tracking with the Google & YouTube app on Shopify](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13494537))

## Deploi's call

Build none of the three platforms' server connections first, because on Shopify each platform's own channel app already sends conversions server to server. Switch all three on, verify deduplication, then baseline the gap. Spend budget only on a gap that survives, on one server-side pipeline, bought or built, for every destination. Nothing gets built before deduplication is verified, because in our judgment an unverified first integration most often ends in inflated conversions nobody catches until a quarterly review.

**WAIT: Build nothing yet while**

- Meta or TikTok sits below Enhanced data sharing, or Google Ads is not linked in the Google & YouTube app ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/analyze-marketing/meta-data-sharing); [Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/15496063), October 2026).
- Browser and server copies of a purchase lack a shared event ID on Meta and TikTok.
- You cannot yet state one channel's gap against Shopify orders.
- Your checkout or theme changes this quarter.

**DEPENDS: Fund one server-side pipeline, bought or built, when**

- The baseline still shows a gap big enough to change bids on a material channel.
- You need more than the purchase: Google's Shopify server import carries only Checkout completed for now ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/15496063), October 2026).
- Several of your paid platforms still run on a browser pixel alone.
- A named owner keeps it running. Deploi's server-side tracking record scores the choice DEPENDS: buy a maintained data layer for speed, build to own the event stream ([Deploi decision record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/server-side-tracking-and-data-layer), October 2026).

## Why is none of the three the first build on Shopify?

None of the three is the first build on Shopify, because each platform's own channel app already sends conversions server to server. Meta's feed is the Conversions API (application programming interface), TikTok's is the Events API, and Google's is a purchase import through Google Ads Data Manager. [What server-side tracking does and does not recover](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/server-side-tracking-attribution-recovery-ios-cookies) has its own answer, as does [what TikTok's Events API adds](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/tiktok-events-api-for-mid-market-advertisers).

**Each platform's own Shopify app already carries a server path for conversions**

| Platform | Server path in its Shopify app | Where you switch it on | Channel app price |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Meta | Conversions API beside the Meta pixel, at Enhanced or Maximum data sharing | Facebook & Instagram channel, Data sharing settings | Free to install |
| TikTok | Events API beside the TikTok Pixel, at Enhanced or Maximum data sharing | TikTok app, data-sharing level | Free to install |
| Google | Purchases imported server to server into Google Ads through Data Manager | Google & YouTube app: link Google Ads, and the import activates on its own | Free to install |

## What should the quarter look like, week by week?

The quarter should spend its first three weeks on settings, deduplication and a baseline, and build only after that.

1. **Week 1. Switch on all three, then check.** Set Meta and TikTok data sharing to Enhanced or Maximum. In the Google & YouTube app, link Google Ads and turn on enhanced conversions. Google says the feature "supplements your existing conversion tags by sending hashed first party conversion data" ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13494537), October 2026). Then confirm events arrive in each platform's events tool, because switching a setting on does not prove events arrive.
1. **Week 2. Fix deduplication before you add anything.** Check that browser and server copies share one event ID (`event_id`) on Meta and TikTok, because both stop deduplicating 48 hours after the first event ([Meta for Developers](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/ads-commerce/conversions-api/deduplicate-pixel-and-server-events); [TikTok Business Help Center](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/event-deduplication), October 2026). Google deduplicates its tag against the Shopify server import ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/15496063), October 2026) and asks you to remove legacy tags ([Google's setup guide](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13494537), October 2026).
1. **Week 3. Baseline the gap on all three.** Compare platform-reported conversions with Shopify orders over the same window, with attribution settings fixed. The rest of the quarter is judged against this baseline.
1. **Weeks 4 to 10. Fund only what the baseline justifies.** That means one pipeline, bought or built, or nothing.
1. **Weeks 11 to 13. Re-measure and publish.** Report the narrowed gap per channel, not revenue.

## What is worth funding if a reporting gap remains after setup?

If a reporting gap remains after setup, the spend worth funding is one server-side pipeline, bought or built, for the events the Meta, TikTok and Google apps leave in the browser. The gap here means platform-reported conversions still trail Shopify orders once all three apps run their server paths. A second purchase feed for one platform is not worth funding. Google's Shopify server import carries only purchases from the Checkout completed event for now ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/15496063), October 2026), so add to cart and checkout started still reach Google from the browser. Shopify describes Meta's Conversions API (application programming interface) as sending "the purchase event" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/analyze-marketing/meta-data-sharing), October 2026).

On Shopify that pipeline starts from a custom pixel, because Shopify defines customer events as "actions that take place in the customer's browser" ([Shopify's pixels overview](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/pixels/overview), October 2026). If you build it, the pixel feeds a tagging server you control, which forwards events to every destination. [Deploi's server-side tracking record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/server-side-tracking-and-data-layer) scores the choice DEPENDS: buy a maintained data layer for speed, or build a custom web pixel and server-side tag manager to own the event stream (October 2026). [Deploi's Elevar record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/elevar-vs-built-data-layer) scores the buy path BUY for most mid-market stores (October 2026).

## Which spend patterns change the plan?

Three spend patterns change the quarter plan for Meta, TikTok and Google: the largest reporting gap sits on a small channel, the mix is almost all Meta, or the spend runs on other platforms.

- **The largest gap sits on a channel taking under about 15% of paid spend (our rule of thumb).** Skip the server-side build. Spend the quarter on event definitions and customer identity instead: one purchase event, one value definition, one stable identifier across the funnel. It improves match quality, how well each ad platform ties your events to its own users, on every destination at once.
- **You run Meta almost exclusively.** Switch Meta data sharing to Enhanced or Maximum and spend the quarter on creative and measurement design. [Whether server-side tracking pays at $10M a year](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/server-side-tracking-overkill-at-10m-per-year) also says to turn on Shopify's sharing and stop once Meta takes 80% or more of paid spend.
- **You spend materially on platforms beyond Meta, TikTok and Google.** Check each platform's own Shopify app first, because some now carry a server path. Pinterest's listing advertises "the Pinterest Tag and API for Conversions" ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/pinterest), October 2026). Pinterest describes that application programming interface (API) as "a server-to-server connection" ([Pinterest Business help](https://help.pinterest.com/en/business/article/the-pinterest-api-for-conversions), October 2026). Where platforms still run on a browser pixel alone, build one server-side collection point rather than one integration per platform, so adding the next platform means changing settings, not starting another project.

## When should you build nothing this quarter?

Build nothing this quarter in three cases, because each one turns a new server feed into a new error.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When deduplication is unverified.** The first thing a new feed does to a broken pixel setup is double the purchase count. [The deduplication limits no server feed can change](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/server-side-tracking-limitations) have their own answer.
> - **When consent is not wired.** In markets that require consent, Shopify runs web pixels "only when visitors have provided the permissions required in the pixel configuration" ([Shopify Help Center, Pixels overview](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/pixels/overview), October 2026). A server pipeline that ignores that consent state is a compliance exposure that outlives the quarter.
> - **When the checkout or theme is changing.** Set up tracking on the new checkout, not the one being replaced.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** The standard sequencing advice is biggest-spend-first, which on Shopify sends merchants to build an integration the platform already gives them. Build where the platform gives you nothing. On Shopify today that is not Meta, TikTok or Google: it is the events beyond the purchase, handled once for every destination.

**What we check first.** The data-sharing setting in each channel app, before anyone quotes a server-side build. In our judgment a large share of what gets scoped as a build is a setting nobody switched on, and we say so in the proposal.

**What this page adds.** The parent asks whether server-side tracking recovers attribution at all. This answer orders the work on Shopify: Meta's, TikTok's and Google's own channel apps now carry a server path for conversions, so no platform API is the first build. Deduplication and a baseline come first, and any spend after that is one pipeline, bought or built, for the events the apps leave in the browser.

## When this answer changes

- Google adds events beyond Checkout completed to its Shopify server import, or stops activating it automatically.
- Shopify or Meta changes which data-sharing levels use the Conversions API.
- TikTok changes what its Shopify app's Enhanced or Maximum level includes.
- Meta or TikTok changes its 48-hour deduplication window.
- Pinterest, Snapchat or Reddit change what their Shopify apps send server to server.
- Your checkout, theme or consent setup changes.
