# Does switching from Klaviyo to a Shopify-native-only email tool make sense once a brand hits Shopify Plus, or does Klaviyo stay worth it?

## Short answer

Klaviyo stays worth it for a Shopify Plus brand whose top flows run on data Shopify does not hold, such as reviews or loyalty. Shopify Messaging, Shopify's native tool, includes 10,000 free emails a month from Basic to Plus, then $1 per 1,000 up to 300,000 ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/email/pricing), October 2026). So switch only when every flow uses Shopify data.

- **Shopify Messaging email:** 10,000 free a month, then $1 per 1,000. On Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus; $0.65 per 1,000 after 300,000 emails and $0.55 after 750,000; unused emails do not carry over; abandoned checkout automations are free ([Shopify Help Center, Shopify Messaging email pricing](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/email/pricing))
- **Shopify Messaging text message, US:** $0.012 a message. Canada $0.025; Luxembourg $0.13, the highest; $2.15 a month for each approved toll-free number in the United States and Canada ([Shopify Help Center, Pricing and billing for SMS marketing campaigns](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/sms/pricing))
- **Shopify Messaging text automations:** Abandonment templates only. Browse, cart and checkout abandonment send email and text; welcome, post-purchase, win-back and birthday templates send email only ([Shopify Help Center, Creating and managing marketing automations in Shopify Messaging](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/marketing-automations/create))
- **Checkout marketing consent:** Shopify's own checkbox, no plan gate stated. Shopify checkout adds text and WhatsApp marketing sign-up checkboxes, no plan restriction stated; Klaviyo's consent block reaches the checkout steps on Shopify Plus only ([Shopify Help Center, Collecting customer contact information](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/customer-contact-information); [Klaviyo Help Center, How to collect SMS and/or WhatsApp consent on Shopify checkout pages](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/35067557759771))

## Deploi's call

Klaviyo stays worth it on Shopify Plus while your top flows need data that other apps hold. Shopify Messaging has closed the channel gap and the price gap with Klaviyo. It has not closed that data gap, because automations that include a third-party app move to Shopify Flow. So check what your five highest-revenue flows condition on before anyone builds a cost comparison.

**BUY: Keep Klaviyo when**

- One of your top flows conditions on another app's data, such as reviews, loyalty, helpdesk tickets or subscriptions.
- Your engaged list is past roughly 10,000 profiles and repeat revenue rides on segmented lifecycle flows ([Deploi Build vs. Buy](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/klaviyo-vs-shopify-email-flow), October 2026).
- Text messages run beyond abandonment, because Shopify Messaging's SMS (text message) automations cover browse, cart and checkout abandonment only ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/marketing-automations/create), October 2026).
- International is live and you localize catalogs, prices and currency for each market from one account.

**WAIT: Shopify Messaging with Shopify Flow is enough while**

- Every top flow conditions on Shopify fields alone, on one Shopify store.
- A small team has no dedicated lifecycle owner, so fewer systems beat more capability.
- After an acquisition, the acquirer runs its own lifecycle stack and the store needs a caretaker, not a program.
- Legal accepts Shopify Network Intelligence, the privacy setting that lets Shopify use your customer data together with other merchants' data, which Shopify Messaging requires ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/privacy-and-security/privacy/customer-privacy-settings/privacy-settings), October 2026).

## What can Shopify Messaging send now, and what does it require?

Shopify Messaging can send email, SMS (text message) and WhatsApp marketing campaigns from the Shopify admin on every plan from Basic to Plus, and it requires Shopify Network Intelligence ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging), October 2026). Those channels move the native option in [the Klaviyo, Omnisend and Attentive stack decision](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/klaviyo-vs-omnisend-vs-attentive-20m-100m-gmv) from an email-only starter tool to a real alternative. Shopify Messaging's automations are narrower than its campaigns:

- **Email automations:** templates for browse, cart and checkout abandonment, welcome offers, post-purchase thanks and upsells, win-back, birthdays and top customers ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/marketing-automations/create), October 2026).
- **Text-message automations:** browse, cart and checkout abandonment only; every other template sends email only (same source).
- **Custom or third-party automations:** Shopify sends these to a separate workflow in the Shopify Flow app (same source).

Under Shopify Network Intelligence, "Shopify will securely use your customer data together with customer data from other merchants to generate insights" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/privacy-and-security/privacy/customer-privacy-settings/privacy-settings), October 2026). So clear that setting with legal before anyone prices a switch.

## What does Shopify Messaging cost at mid-market volume?

Shopify Messaging costs $1 per 1,000 emails after the first 10,000 each month, falling to $0.65 after 300,000 and $0.55 after 750,000 ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/email/pricing), October 2026). Text messages (SMS) bill per message by country ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/sms/pricing), October 2026).

**Shopify Messaging's published rates by channel and volume**

| Line | Published rate (USD) |
| --- | --- |
| Email, first 10,000 a month | Free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus; unused emails do not carry over |
| Email, up to 300,000 a month | $1 per 1,000 additional emails |
| Email, after 300,000 a month | $0.65 per 1,000, then $0.55 per 1,000 after 750,000 |
| Abandoned checkout automations | Free, outside the monthly count |
| Text message, per message | United States $0.012; Canada $0.025; Luxembourg $0.13, the highest |
| Toll-free number, US and Canada | $2.15 a month per approved number |

At 2 million emails a month that comes to about $1,270, reading each rate as covering only its own band, as Shopify's "After you reach" wording suggests (Deploi arithmetic from Shopify's rates). Klaviyo's App Store listing still prices text messages in credits ([Klaviyo](https://apps.shopify.com/klaviyo-email-marketing), October 2026). Klaviyo moved them from credits to per-message dollar rates on 13 July 2026, priced by channel, country and number type, with lower rates on larger plans ([Klaviyo Help Center](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/52952739755931), October 2026). So compare your account's rate table with Shopify's $0.012, not the listing's credit count.

## What does a Klaviyo contract buy that Shopify Messaging does not?

A Klaviyo contract buys depth on your customer data, not send volume. Four things separate it from Shopify Messaging:

1. **Segmentation depth.** Behavioral and predictive segments built on profile-level event history; Klaviyo lists predictive analytics and multi-channel segmentation and flows on its Email plan ([Klaviyo on the Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/klaviyo-email-marketing), October 2026).
1. **Flow logic.** Conditional branching, split paths and nested time and event triggers, with text messages in any flow; Shopify Messaging's text automations stop at abandonment ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/marketing-automations/create), October 2026). In Deploi's judgment, flow logic is what separates a competent program from a good one.
1. **Data beyond Shopify.** Reviews, loyalty, helpdesk and subscription data join one customer profile from Klaviyo's "350+ integrations" ([Klaviyo on the Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/klaviyo-email-marketing), October 2026).
1. **A program that outlives a replatform.** Flows, segments and history stay in the same Klaviyo account. Klaviyo will not change a flow's trigger, so each flow is cloned onto the new store's metric ([Klaviyo Help Center](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003124151), October 2026), which is why [flows get rebuilt in revenue order after a replatform](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/klaviyo-flows-to-rebuild-first-after-replatform).

## How can you tell whether your flows need Klaviyo?

List what your five highest-revenue flows condition on; that list tells you whether the flows need Klaviyo. If every condition is a Shopify field, such as order count, total spent, product purchased, a tag or a customer segment, Shopify's own tools can carry the program: Shopify Messaging's templates, with Shopify Flow for any custom automation ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/marketing-automations/create), October 2026). The Klaviyo line then buys optionality you are not using.

If any flow conditions on a submitted review, a loyalty tier, a support ticket or a subscription state, Shopify Messaging cannot hold it alone. Shopify sends "an automation that includes a third-party app" to a Shopify Flow workflow instead ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/shopify-messaging/marketing-automations/create), October 2026), which means rebuilding the join between those apps yourself.

In Deploi's judgment, that test answers the question better than any feature matrix, and it takes an afternoon.

## Does a Plus brand lose checkout consent capture by leaving Klaviyo?

A Plus brand does not lose checkout marketing consent by leaving Klaviyo: Shopify's own checkout can add SMS (text message) and WhatsApp marketing sign-up checkboxes, with no plan restriction stated ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/create-marketing/customer-contact-information), October 2026). What a Plus brand gives up is Klaviyo's consent app block on the checkout steps themselves. Klaviyo places that block on checkout pages for Shopify Plus only. Only Plus stores can collect transactional consent there, the opt-in for order-update texts ([Klaviyo Help Center](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/35067557759771), October 2026).

So list every consent type you collect today, marketing and transactional, channel by channel. Then confirm where each one lands in Shopify Messaging before you move, not after.

## When is switching off Klaviyo the wrong move?

Switching off Klaviyo is the wrong move whenever the decision rests on the rate card before anyone has checked the flows.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When international is live.** Klaviyo localizes catalogs, prices and currency for each market from one account, so the comparison stops being a rate card. [How Klaviyo handles Shopify Markets](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/klaviyo-shopify-markets-multi-currency-multi-language) sets out the limits.
> - **When a replatform or a renewal quote is the trigger.** [The Klaviyo, Omnisend and Attentive comparison's when-not list](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/klaviyo-vs-omnisend-vs-attentive-20m-100m-gmv) covers both. On a renewal, Klaviyo bills only profiles that can still receive marketing. Suppressing unengaged profiles qualifies you for a lower tier without a migration. The bill drops once you choose that tier. Auto-downgrade makes that move for you, but only with flexible sending, Klaviyo's option to buy the next tier's capacity as a one-time add-on instead of upgrading ([Klaviyo Help Center](https://help.klaviyo.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000976672), October 2026).
> - **When nobody has audited flow conditions.** Switching a program you have not inventoried is how a brand loses a flow and finds out in the next quarterly review.

## Deploi's point of view

**What we've seen.** Switching projects that start with a rate card end badly, and switching projects that start with a flow inventory usually end with a smaller, better decision than the one originally proposed. Frequently the answer is not "switch" but "stop paying Klaviyo for the profiles who have not opened anything in two years."

**Where we disagree.** Most published guidance on this question still treats the Shopify-native option as an email-only starter tool. It sends email, SMS and WhatsApp, with 10,000 free emails a month on every plan from Basic to Plus and volume rates down to $0.55 per 1,000. Advice written against the old product will tell a single-store brand to keep paying for capability it has never used.

**What this page adds.** The parent names Shopify Messaging as the native option. This page prices it line by line, shows its text-message automations stop at abandonment, sets out what a Klaviyo contract buys beyond it, gives the flow-condition audit that settles a switch, and shows that Shopify's own checkout checkbox keeps marketing consent, with no plan restriction stated.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify Messaging adds automations that condition on other apps' data without a separate Shopify Flow workflow.
- Shopify Messaging opens text-message automations beyond browse, cart and checkout abandonment.
- Shopify changes the 10,000 free emails or its email or text-message rates.
- Klaviyo changes its per-message text rates or its profile tiers.
- Shopify drops the Shopify Network Intelligence requirement for Shopify Messaging.
- Your engaged list crosses roughly 10,000 profiles, the line where Deploi's record moves from the included stack to Klaviyo.
