# Do multi-brand companies need a separate blended-vs-dedicated decision for each brand, or can one architecture serve all brands?

## Short answer

Multi-brand companies decide once per brand whether wholesale shares a store with retail (blended) or gets its own business-to-business (B2B) store (dedicated), because Shopify Plus allows "one brand per contract" ([shopify.com/plus/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing), October 2026). Expansion stores must share the main brand's name and branding, so a second brand on Plus needs its own subscription ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026). One wholesale store serves every brand only when buyers overlap.

- **Brands per Plus contract:** One. Shopify: "one brand per contract." A company with several brands needs a separate Shopify Plus contract per brand. ([Shopify, Shopify Plus pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing))
- **Expansion store branding:** Identical to the main brand. A store that fails the criteria may fit a multi-brand agreement, which requires a separate Shopify Plus subscription for each brand. ([Shopify Help Center, Overview of expansion stores for organizations on the Shopify Plus plan](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores))
- **Free B2B stores:** One per contract. Pre-approved for the main brand's identical products, behind user login and a B2B organization association. ([Shopify Help Center, Overview of expansion stores for organizations on the Shopify Plus plan](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores))
- **Shared between stores:** Users and billing. Products, collections, inventory and settings don't sync between stores by default. Apps bill per store, and a theme license can't be shared. ## Deploi's call

Decide per brand, constrain per contract, and cut wholesale on the buyer seam rather than the brand seam. If a distributor buys three of your brands, one wholesale store beats three, and that conclusion holds even when the direct-to-consumer storefronts stay fully separate.

**BUILD: Consolidate wholesale in one store when**

- Distributors buy from more than one of your brands, so separate stores would split each of them into several company records.
- One sales team sells the whole portfolio.
- Finance wants one credit relationship per customer.
- Buyers overlap across three or more brands, the portfolio scale at which [our multi-store record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/multi-store-architecture) scores shared plumbing BUILD: one design system, one data spine, one reporting layer (August 2026).

**CUSTOMIZE: Keep wholesale inside each brand's store while**

- Each brand has its own wholesale buyers, assortment and team.
- No brand has outgrown the catalogs its plan allows ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/b2b/getting-started/plan-features), October 2026).
- The brands don't share a warehouse.

## Is the blended-versus-dedicated decision per brand or per portfolio?

The blended-versus-dedicated decision is per brand, because every input to it is per brand: assortment, buyer type, staffing, inventory pooling and contract. [Shopify's test for a dedicated business-to-business (B2B) store](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/dedicated-b2b-store-vs-blended-store-break-even) runs once for each brand, so a house of brands can land on blended for one brand and dedicated for another.

The **constraint** sits on the Shopify Plus contract, and a contract holds one brand. Shopify's Plus pricing page offers "Unlimited online stores, but one brand per contract". Companies with several brands "will need a separate Shopify Plus contract per brand" ([shopify.com/plus/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing), October 2026). So the per-brand decisions stay independent on the platform side, and wholesale buyers are the one question that crosses brands.

## What do Shopify's contract rules mean for a portfolio's B2B stores?

Shopify's contract rules mean each brand's business-to-business (B2B) stores sit on that brand's own contract, because no expansion store can carry a second brand.

- Expansion stores must "Be identical to the main brand with respect to store name and other branding" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026).
- A store that fails that test may fit a multi-brand agreement, which "requires each brand to have its own separate Shopify Plus plan subscription" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026). [Our answer on three brands and Plus contracts](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/shopify-plus-contracts-for-3-brands) works through the subscription math.
- The pre-approved B2B wholesale store carries "Identical products as the main brand", with a "Limit of one free B2B store per contract" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026).

So the free B2B store follows the brand: on our reading of those per-contract rules, each brand's contract carries its own. A wholesale store selling several brands' products fits no brand's free slot, because its products aren't one main brand's. Shopify publishes no rule for that store, so get its terms in writing, or run it on a plan of its own. B2B runs on every plan ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/b2b/getting-started/plan-features), October 2026), at $39 to $399 a month billed monthly below Plus ([shopify.com/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/pricing), October 2026).

## How does the decision split between brand, contract and store?

The decision splits three ways: whether a brand needs separate business-to-business (B2B) selling is per brand, the free B2B store is per contract, and every cost and buyer record is per store.

**The B2B decision runs per brand, the free B2B store per contract, and costs and buyer records per store**

| Layer | Decided per | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A separate B2B experience | Brand | Assortment, buyer type and staffing differ by brand |
| The free dedicated B2B store | Contract, which holds one brand | One free B2B store per contract, for the main brand's identical products |
| Catalog allowance | Store | 3 on Basic, Grow and Advanced; unlimited on Plus |
| Apps and theme licenses | Store | Apps bill per store, and a theme license can't be shared |
| Companies, buyers and orders | Store | Stores don't share data by default |

The last row decides most real portfolios. A distributor who buys from three of your brands becomes three company records in three admins, with three credit relationships, three terms setups and three order histories. Nothing in Shopify reconciles them. So one question sorts a portfolio in one meeting: do your wholesale buyers buy from more than one of your brands? If yes, consolidate wholesale, whatever the direct-to-consumer side does. If no, each brand's decision really is independent.

## Which B2B pattern fits a multi-brand portfolio?

Three business-to-business (B2B) patterns fit a multi-brand portfolio: a blended store per brand, one shared wholesale store, or a dedicated B2B store per brand. Buyer overlap picks between them.

**One blended store per brand.** Right when each brand has its own wholesale buyers, assortment and team, and none has hit a catalog or experience wall. It is the cheapest to run, with no cross-store reconciliation. Each brand also keeps its direct-to-consumer assortment on agentic storefronts, Shopify's sales channels inside AI assistants. That is because Shopify excludes B2B-only products product by product when it can identify them, as it can with native B2B catalogs ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/products), October 2026).

**One shared wholesale store, with brand storefronts kept separate.** Right when buyers overlap, one sales team sells the portfolio and finance wants one credit relationship per customer. It needs its own plan or written contract terms, since the free B2B slot fits one brand's identical products. One catalog structure then carries several brands' products, which is a merchandising problem rather than a platform one. Its catalog count follows [the counting rule for tiers and hand-priced currencies](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/advanced-3-catalog-limit-at-20m-gmv-b2b).

**Dedicated B2B per brand.** Right when brands run as separate businesses, with separate legal entities, inventory and buyers. It is the most expensive pattern by a wide margin, because every store repeats its app stack and theme license ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026).

## When should a portfolio not design B2B brand by brand?

A portfolio should not design business-to-business (B2B) selling brand by brand when one brand dominates, more brands are coming, the brands share a warehouse or the driver is the org chart.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When one brand is materially larger than the others.** Design for that brand and let the rest inherit, or you will build three architectures to serve a rounding error.
> - **When the portfolio is still acquiring.** Every acquisition arrives on somebody else's platform with its own wholesale process, so an architecture that assumes a fixed brand count is obsolete at the next deal.
> - **When the brands share a warehouse.** Stores don't share inventory by default, and Shopify's route to syncing it is a third-party app or an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026). That is an integration somebody has to budget.
> - **When the driver is the org chart rather than the customer.** Brand managers wanting their own admin is a real organizational force and a bad architectural input.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** Multi-brand groups are routinely sold a store-per-brand architecture on the strength of the nine free expansion stores. Those slots don't stretch across brands: Shopify allows one brand per Plus contract, so each brand on Plus brings its own contract, and every store carries its own apps and theme license whether its slot is free or not. Portfolio architecture is decided by the app bill and the buyer overlap, not by the slot count.

**How we scope it.** We ask for the wholesale customer list across brands before we ask anything about themes or platforms. Overlap in that list decides the architecture, and it is usually the only artifact nobody has pulled together.

**What we refuse to quote.** A per-store build estimate for a portfolio before the store count is fixed, because the count is the estimate. Two stores and five stores are not the same project scaled, they are different projects.

**What this page adds.** The parent prices one brand's dedicated store. This page adds what a portfolio changes: a Plus contract holds one brand, so expansion stores and the free B2B store never stretch across brands; a wholesale store shared by several brands sits outside Shopify's pre-approved B2B type; and overlapping wholesale buyers make the brand boundary the wrong place to split a portfolio's B2B.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify changes "one brand per contract" on Plus, or publishes pricing for multi-brand agreements.
- Shopify changes the limit of one free B2B store per contract, or its identical-products condition.
- Shopify adds sync for companies, customers or inventory between stores in one organization.
- Shopify starts billing apps or theme licenses per organization instead of per store.
- The group acquires or sells a brand.
