# Does Perplexity weight recency more heavily than ChatGPT does when deciding which product page to cite, and should that change how often we update content?

## Short answer

Perplexity does not cite fresher pages than ChatGPT on the published evidence. In a study of 17 million pages cited by AI engines and Google, ChatGPT's citations averaged 958 days since publication against Perplexity's 1,166 ([Ahrefs](https://ahrefs.com/blog/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content/), July 2025). Neither company's crawler documentation names a recency weight ([Perplexity's crawler page](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers) and [OpenAI's](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots), October 2026), so update pages when facts change.

- **Average age of cited pages:** ChatGPT 958 days, Perplexity 1,166 days. Days since publication across 17 million cited pages. Days since last update: ChatGPT citations 989, ChatGPT in-text references 865, Perplexity 993 (Ahrefs, July 2025). ([Ahrefs, New Study: AI Assistants Prefer to Cite Fresher Content (17 Million Citations Analyzed)](https://ahrefs.com/blog/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content/))
- **Published recency weight:** None from Perplexity or OpenAI. Both document an index crawler and a fetcher that visits pages when a user asks, and neither names a recrawl interval or freshness signal (crawler docs, October 2026). ([Perplexity, Perplexity Crawlers](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers); [OpenAI Developers, Overview of OpenAI Crawlers](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots))
- **Time for a robots.txt change:** About 24 hours on both engines. OpenAI says about 24 hours for ChatGPT search results and Perplexity says up to 24 hours. Neither figure is a crawl interval (October 2026). ([Perplexity, Perplexity Crawlers](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers); [OpenAI Developers, Overview of OpenAI Crawlers](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots))
- **Price and stock in ChatGPT:** Fed by Shopify Catalog, with some delay. Shopify Catalog continuously updates inventory and pricing; OpenAI says merchant price and shipping changes can take some time to show in ChatGPT (October 2026). ([OpenAI Help Center, Shopping with ChatGPT Search](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490-shopping-with-chatgpt-search); [Shopify Help Center, Shopify Catalog and product discovery for agentic storefronts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/products))

## Deploi's call

Do not change your update cadence for Perplexity or ChatGPT. Refresh cadence is a data-hygiene question wearing an AI costume. The stores that win on freshness are the ones whose facts live in metafields and update once, everywhere.

**WAIT: Skip an engine-specific refresh schedule while**

- Neither Perplexity nor OpenAI names a recency weight or a recrawl interval in its crawler documentation ([Perplexity](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers) and [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) docs, October 2026), so an engine-specific schedule targets nothing documented.
- A tool sells refresh frequency as an AI ranking lever. Deploi's [AI answer engine visibility record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/ai-answer-engine-visibility-geo-aeo) holds paid tiers until your own prompt panel, a fixed set of buyer questions run in each engine, shows a gap (October 2026).

**CUSTOMIZE: Put expiring facts on a schedule when**

- Prices, stock, compatibility or policies change within a season. Date each claim on the page and update it the day the fact changes.
- Specs sit in rich-text fields with no owner. Move them into metafields, the attribute source of truth in Deploi's [agentic commerce readiness record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/agentic-commerce-readiness-feeds) (October 2026).
- Your products reach ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot through Shopify Catalog, which Shopify says continuously updates inventory and pricing ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/products), October 2026).

## Does Perplexity cite fresher pages than ChatGPT?

Perplexity does not cite fresher pages than ChatGPT in the largest study that compares them, and a smaller 2026 study agrees ([Seer Interactive](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/study-content-recencys-impact-on-ai-visibility-in-2026), July 2026). The larger study measured the age of 17 million pages cited by AI engines and Google ([Ahrefs](https://ahrefs.com/blog/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content/), July 2025). ChatGPT's citations were the newest, at 958 days since publication against Perplexity's 1,166. By last update, ChatGPT's citations and Perplexity's are level, at 989 and 993 days, and ChatGPT's in-text references are fresher still, at 865. So Perplexity shows no stronger pull toward fresh pages.

**ChatGPT cited newer pages than Perplexity, and Google's results ran older than both**

| Engine | Average days since publication | Average days since last update |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT citations | 958 | 989 |
| ChatGPT in-text references | 1,023 | 865 |
| Perplexity | 1,166 | 993 |
| Google organic results | 1,416 | 1,047 |
| Google AI Overviews, top three citations | 1,432 | 1,067 |

Ahrefs also found that Perplexity and ChatGPT list newer sources first within an answer, which it reads as "intentional age-related ordering". Our reading: recency shapes citation order more than selection, which fits [why one product page serves ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/product-page-structure-chatgpt-vs-perplexity-vs-gemini).

## What do Perplexity and ChatGPT document about how they fetch pages?

Perplexity and ChatGPT document the same two-part design: an index crawler for search results (PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot) and a fetcher that visits a page live when a user asks. Neither company's crawler documentation names a recrawl interval or a freshness signal ([Perplexity](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers) and [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) crawler docs, October 2026).

**Perplexity and ChatGPT document the same live fetch and 24-hour lag, and no recency weight**

| Recency question | Perplexity | ChatGPT |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Live fetch when a user asks | Yes: Perplexity-User, which generally ignores robots.txt | Yes: ChatGPT-User, for which robots.txt rules may not apply |
| Time for a robots.txt change to apply | Up to 24 hours | About 24 hours |
| Published recrawl interval | None | None |
| Published recency weight | None | None |

So a same-day edit can reach either engine through its live fetcher or wait for its index crawler, and neither company says which fires when. Any figure that weights Perplexity's freshness comes from outside observation, because neither vendor publishes one. [How fast a brand-new page reaches Gemini and ChatGPT](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/gemini-vs-chatgpt-new-page-indexing-speed) is a separate question.

## Does updating content more often get a product page cited more?

Updating content more often does not by itself get a product page cited, because AI engines reward maintained substance, not new dates. One large study found AI assistants cite pages first published 2.9 years earlier on average, and it warns that "Low-quality, irrelevant content that's updated every day will not have a magic positive effect on your visibility in AI search" ([Ahrefs](https://ahrefs.com/blog/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content/), July 2025). It still concludes there "may be some benefit to regularly updating content".

Maintenance shows up in citations all the same. A 2026 study found 75% of the pages ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cited had been updated in the past year, with Perplexity the most forgiving of older pages ([Seer Interactive](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/study-content-recencys-impact-on-ai-visibility-in-2026), July 2026).

Google says its systems "look at several factors" to estimate when a page was "published or significantly updated" ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/publication-dates), October 2026). So a new date on unchanged copy is not a significant update. It also spends the one signal, a visible and truthful last-updated date, that makes a dated claim trustworthy.

## What should set the update cadence for a Shopify product page?

Facts that expire should set the update cadence for a Shopify product page: price, stock, compatibility and policy. Shopify Catalog, the product feed Shopify shares with AI channels, "continuously updates your product data, ensuring that there's accurate inventory and pricing" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/products), October 2026).

> **Shopify's own pages disagree about Perplexity**
> Shopify's Catalog page lets you remove Catalog access for ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot and does not mention Perplexity ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/products), October 2026). Shopify's Perplexity Shopping guide says Catalog "automatically syndicates your product data to connected AI platforms, including Perplexity" ([Shopify blog](https://www.shopify.com/blog/perplexity-shopping), April 2026). So do not count on either reading for Perplexity's prices and stock.

ChatGPT can still trail a price change. OpenAI says that when merchants change prices or shipping terms, "there may be some delay before it is reflected in the information you see" ([OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490-shopping-with-chatgpt-search), October 2026). So price and stock travel through the catalog, and the product page only has to agree with it.

In Deploi's judgment, a merchant selling 400 SKUs (stock keeping units) with seasonal ranges needs a quarterly review of dated claims on the page. Price and availability need a same-day path.

## When is a content refresh schedule the wrong investment?

A content refresh schedule is the wrong investment when it changes no fact a shopper or an AI engine relies on, as in these four cases.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When the refresh changes only the date.** Google estimates update dates from several factors ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/publication-dates), October 2026), so a date stamp on unchanged copy buys nothing and costs trust.
> - **When a tool sells refresh frequency as an AI ranking lever.** Neither Perplexity nor OpenAI publishes a recency weight. Deploi's [AI answer engine visibility record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/ai-answer-engine-visibility-geo-aeo) says no app can promise that an engine will recommend you (October 2026).
> - **When Perplexity sends a sliver of your AI traffic.** Check [how much store traffic Perplexity sends against ChatGPT](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/perplexity-vs-chatgpt-vs-gemini-traffic-and-sales) before you build a schedule around it.
> - **When specs sit in rich-text fields nobody owns.** Move them into metafields first, the attribute source of truth in Deploi's [agentic commerce readiness record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/agentic-commerce-readiness-feeds) (October 2026), because a schedule cannot keep an ownerless fact current.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** The AI-visibility tooling market sells refresh frequency as a ranking lever and charges monthly for it. We have seen no vendor documentation supporting a recency weight, and we will not price work against a number nobody publishes.

**What we check first.** where each expiring fact lives. In our judgment, the pages that go stale are the ones with facts typed into rich-text fields: a spec written into a paragraph has no owner and no expiry, while the same spec in a metafield shows up in a report when it's empty.

**What this page adds.** that Perplexity and ChatGPT document the same two fetchers and no recency weight, and that two citation-age studies found ChatGPT citing newer pages than Perplexity.

## When this answer changes

- Perplexity or OpenAI publishes a recrawl interval, a freshness signal or a recency weight.
- Ahrefs or another named study repeats the citation-age comparison with newer data, or for product pages alone.
- Shopify's Help Center names Perplexity as a channel that reads Shopify Catalog, or Shopify's blog stops saying it does.
- OpenAI shortens the delay before merchant price changes reach ChatGPT's product results.
- Perplexity or OpenAI changes how its user-triggered fetcher treats robots.txt.
