# At what point does a premium paid theme (versus Dawn or Horizon free defaults) actually earn its cost for a $20M-$500M merchant?

## Short answer

A premium Shopify theme earns its cost at $20 million to $500 million as the base for custom work, never the finished storefront. Prestige costs $400 and Impulse $500, paid once ([Maestrooo](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/prestige/presets/prestige), [Archetype Themes](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/impulse/presets/impulse), October 2026), so the fee is minor. Both top 90% positive reviews; Dawn and Horizon each hold 36% ([Shopify Theme Store](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/dawn/presets/dawn), [Horizon listing](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/horizon/presets/horizon), October 2026).

- **License price:** $400 (Prestige), $500 (Impulse). Each a one-time payment and lifetime license for one store; on Shopify Plus, each storefront that uses the theme needs its own license (Shopify Theme Store and Help Center, October 2026). ([Maestrooo, Prestige on the Shopify Theme Store](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/prestige/presets/prestige); [Archetype Themes, Impulse on the Shopify Theme Store](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/impulse/presets/impulse); [Shopify Help Center, Understanding licensing and transferring themes on Shopify](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/managing-themes/unlicensed-themes))
- **Positive reviews:** 91% and 94% paid; 36% for both free themes. Prestige 91% of 870 reviews, Impulse 94% of 1,303, Dawn 36% of 290 and Horizon 36% of 208 on the Shopify Theme Store (October 2026). ([Maestrooo, Prestige on the Shopify Theme Store](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/prestige/presets/prestige); [Archetype Themes, Impulse on the Shopify Theme Store](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/impulse/presets/impulse); [Shopify Theme Store, Dawn](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/dawn/presets/dawn); [Shopify Theme Store, Horizon](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/horizon/presets/horizon))
- **Features only the paid pair list:** 7, from image hotspots to product tabs. Prestige and Impulse both list image hotspots, before/after sliders, product tabs, countdown timers, promo tiles, promo popups and collection page navigation; Dawn and Horizon list none (October 2026). ([Maestrooo, Prestige on the Shopify Theme Store](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/prestige/presets/prestige); [Archetype Themes, Impulse on the Shopify Theme Store](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/impulse/presets/impulse); [Shopify Theme Store, Dawn](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/dawn/presets/dawn); [Shopify Theme Store, Horizon](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/horizon/presets/horizon))
- **Horizon against Dawn:** 42 listed features to 27. Horizon, one of 10 free themes Shopify built with theme blocks, lists 15 features Dawn doesn't and none of the seven both paid themes share (Theme Store, Shopify Changelog, October 2026). ## Deploi's call

A premium theme earns its cost at this revenue band as scaffolding: buy it, then treat it as the base for custom work. The $400 is not the decision, the customization plan is, and a theme with deeper native merchandising simply starts that plan further along.

**BUY: Buy a premium theme when**

- You launch or replatform within two quarters and the theme will be the base for custom work.
- You need features the Theme Store lists for Prestige and Impulse but not for Dawn or Horizon, such as image hotspots ([Maestrooo](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/prestige/presets/prestige), [Archetype Themes](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/impulse/presets/impulse), [Shopify Theme Store](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/dawn/presets/dawn), [Horizon listing](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/horizon/presets/horizon), October 2026).
- No developer can reach your theme yet, a profile [Deploi's theme section library record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/theme-section-library-design-system) scores BUY for a premium theme plus a capped page-builder lane (October 2026).

**BUILD: Stay on a free theme and build sections when**

- You already run Horizon and your campaign work is heading toward a section library, so a paid starting point is one you've passed.
- Revenue is above roughly $10 million with new pages at least monthly and a developer in reach, which the theme section library record scores BUILD ([Deploi Build vs. Buy](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/theme-section-library-design-system), October 2026).
- You run three or more storefronts in one brand family, which [Deploi's shared design system record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/shared-design-system-multi-store) scores BUILD for one shared code repository (October 2026).

## Does a premium theme's license fee matter at $20 million to $500 million?

A premium theme's license fee barely matters at $20 million to $500 million in revenue, because it is paid once and is small against the customization that follows. Prestige costs $400 and Impulse $500 on the Shopify Theme Store, and each listing promises a "One-time payment, lifetime license for your store" ([Prestige](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/prestige/presets/prestige) and [Impulse](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/impulse/presets/impulse) listings, October 2026). The bigger decision sits underneath: [when customizing a theme stops paying](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/theme-customization-vs-custom-build-break-even).

Two licensing rules still count at this size:

- **One license per storefront on Shopify Plus.** Shopify says "you need to purchase a separate theme license for each storefront where the theme is used" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/managing-themes/unlicensed-themes), October 2026). Five storefronts on Prestige therefore cost $2,000 (Deploi arithmetic), and [how expansion stores and separate brands sit on Plus](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/shopify-plus-contracts-for-3-brands) is a separate question.
- **Final sale.** Third-party theme purchases on the Theme Store "are considered final sale", but Shopify lets you preview up to 19 paid themes at the same time before you buy ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/adding-themes), October 2026).

## How do Dawn, Horizon, Prestige and Impulse compare on the Theme Store?

On the Shopify Theme Store, both paid themes hold far higher review scores than Shopify's two free themes, on larger review counts.

**Prestige and Impulse cost $400 and $500 once and lead Dawn and Horizon on reviews, presets and listed features**

| Theme Store data | Dawn | Horizon | Prestige | Impulse |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Price (USD) | Free | Free | $400, one time | $500, one time |
| Developer | Shopify | Shopify | Maestrooo | Archetype Themes |
| Positive reviews | 36% of 290 | 36% of 208 | 91% of 870 | 94% of 1,303 |
| Presets | None listed | None listed | 5 | 4 |
| Features listed | 27 | 42 | 47 | 45 |

In our reading, the gap reflects what merchants find when they try to merchandise, not code quality, and Shopify's free themes are not badly built. Free and paid themes are also reviewed by different merchants, so treat the gap as a signal, not a measurement.

## What does a premium theme add that Dawn and Horizon don't list?

A premium theme adds merchandising and promotion features that exist before a developer opens a file. The Shopify Theme Store lists seven features for both Prestige and Impulse that it lists for neither Dawn nor Horizon ([Prestige](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/prestige/presets/prestige), [Impulse](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/impulse/presets/impulse), [Dawn](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/dawn/presets/dawn) and [Horizon](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/horizon/presets/horizon) listings, October 2026):

- Image hotspots and before/after image sliders
- Product tabs
- Countdown timers, promo tiles and promo popups
- Collection page navigation

Prestige also ships 5 presets and Impulse 4, so a brand refresh can start from a preset instead of a rebuild. Shopify's own advice is to "review the theme's feature list to make sure that it has the features you need" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/adding-themes), October 2026). Each listed feature you don't build is development budget you keep, which is the real return on the license.

## How far does Horizon close the gap with premium themes?

Horizon closes part of the gap with premium themes, not all of it. Shopify launched Horizon on 21 May 2025 as 10 free themes "built with theme blocks offering unparalleled flexibility and customization options" ([Shopify Changelog](https://changelog.shopify.com/posts/horizon-10-new-free-themes-by-shopify), October 2026). On the Theme Store, Horizon lists 42 features to Dawn's 27, adding quick view, product badges, stock counters and a slide-out cart ([Horizon](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/horizon/presets/horizon) and [Dawn](https://themes.shopify.com/themes/dawn/presets/dawn) listings, October 2026).

Horizon still lists none of the seven features both paid themes share, and its reviews sit at 36% positive. So Horizon narrows the configurability gap that once justified a paid theme on its own, while the merchandising-depth gap stays open.

## Which theme fits which merchant profile?

A premium theme fits a brand launching or replatforming soon, Horizon fits a brand already customizing it, and Dawn fits only a deliberately minimal build:

- **Buy the premium theme** if you launch or replatform within two quarters and the theme will be the base for custom work. The license is trivial and the head start is real.
- **Stay on Horizon** if you already run and customize it and your campaign work is heading toward a section library, a set of reusable sections marketing assembles pages from. A $400 starting point is then one you've passed.
- **Stay on Dawn** only if you're minimizing surface area on purpose. Plan the move anyway, because Shopify names theme-block themes such as Horizon as its latest theme architecture ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/managing-themes/versions), October 2026). [What a Dawn to Horizon rebuild involves](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/dawn-to-horizon-rebuild-cost-and-timeline) is the next question there.

## When doesn't a premium theme earn its cost?

A premium theme doesn't earn its cost when it is bought to postpone a design decision, because a new theme resets the conversation for a few weeks. Then the same unmet merchandising requirements come back, on a codebase your team hasn't learned.

> **When not to do this**
> - **You want a finished storefront.** At this revenue band every premium theme gets customized, and that is where the budget goes.
> - **You plan heavy code edits on day one.** Theme Store updates are free, paid themes included ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/managing-themes/updating-themes), October 2026). Each one you take on an edited theme becomes merge work, which [the yearly theme budget](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/theme-customization-annual-budget-20m-500m-gmv) has to carry.
> - **You want to skip the section library decision.** A premium theme is a better floor to build on, not a substitute for a library.

## Deploi's point of view

**What we've seen.** The satisfaction gap in the Theme Store review data matches what we find in scoping calls. Teams on free defaults arrive with a list of merchandising features they assumed were settings. Teams on Prestige or Impulse arrive with a list of brand-specific art direction, which is a shorter and more expensive list, and a better problem to have.

**Where we disagree.** Theme roundups rank on design and speed. Neither predicts cost at mid-market. What predicts cost is how many of your merchandising requirements are configurable before a developer opens a file, and no roundup measures that.

**What this page adds.** The parent answer decides when customizing a theme stops paying; this one prices the starting point: today's Theme Store prices, review shares, presets and feature lists for the four themes the choice involves, the per-storefront license on Shopify Plus, and how far Horizon closes the gap with Dawn.

## When this answer changes

- Prestige or Impulse changes its Theme Store price, or Shopify changes the one-time license model.
- Horizon adds features both paid themes list, such as image hotspots or product tabs.
- The review gap narrows: Dawn or Horizon passes 50% positive on the Shopify Theme Store.
- Shopify changes per-storefront theme licensing on Shopify Plus.
- You add a third storefront in one brand family, where a shared repository starts to beat separate theme copies.
