# Does the same product-page content work equally well for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini citations, or does each engine actually prefer a different content structure?

## Short answer

One well-structured product page serves ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini equally well, because the three engines differ in how they reach a page, not in what they want to find on it. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimization, files or schema.org markup ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), October 2026). OpenAI's and Perplexity's crawler pages ask for crawler access, not a content format ([OpenAI Developers](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) and [Perplexity Docs](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers), October 2026).

- **Google format rules for AI search:** None beyond normal SEO. No special optimization, AI text files or schema.org markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and Google Search ignores llms.txt (Google Search Central, October 2026). ([Google Search Central, AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features); [Google Search Central, Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide))
- **How ChatGPT search finds pages:** OAI-SearchBot, plus partner search providers. Sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to register (OpenAI, October 2026). ([OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI Crawlers](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots); [OpenAI Help Center, Searching the web with ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt))
- **How Perplexity finds pages:** PerplexityBot, plus live Perplexity-User fetches. Perplexity-User may visit a page when a user asks and generally ignores robots.txt; robots.txt changes take up to 24 hours (Perplexity, October 2026). ([Perplexity, Perplexity Crawlers](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers))
- **How Gemini finds pages:** Through the Google Search index. Gemini Apps can ground answers in content from Google's Search index; the Google-Extended token governs that use and does not affect Google Search (Google, October 2026). ([Google Crawling Infrastructure, Google's common crawlers](https://developers.google.com/crawling/docs/crawlers-fetchers/google-common-crawlers))

## Deploi's call

Write one product page for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini: per-engine content variants are a maintenance tax with no documented payoff. We scored AI answer engine visibility CUSTOMIZE because no app can promise that any engine will recommend you (Deploi verdict, September 2026).

**CUSTOMIZE: Keep one product page for every engine when**

- Your product facts live in Shopify's product fields, which Shopify Catalog sends to AI channels: title, description, options, images, price and availability ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/products), October 2026).
- Your team would otherwise write per-engine copy: Google says you don't need to write in a specific way for its generative AI search ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide), October 2026).
- You follow Deploi's [AI answer engine visibility record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/ai-answer-engine-visibility-geo-aeo), scored CUSTOMIZE in September 2026: cheap technical hygiene first, then measurement and citable content.

**WAIT: Spend nothing on engine-specific formats while**

- A vendor sells llms.txt, an AI text file, as the fix. Google Search ignores it ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide), October 2026), and Shopify already serves /llms.txt from each store's default /agents.md ([Shopify developer changelog](https://shopify.dev/changelog/posts/customize-llmstxt-llms-fulltxt-and-agentsmd), May 2026).
- A crawler is still blocked. Sites that opt out of OpenAI's search crawler are not shown in ChatGPT search answers ([OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots), October 2026), so access comes before any content work.
- No prompt panel, a fixed set of buyer questions you run in each engine, shows a gap for one engine. Deploi's record holds paid AI tools at WAIT until one does.

## Do ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini want different content on a product page?

No: ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini publish no content format of their own, so the same product page serves all three. Google says "You don't need to write in a specific way just for generative AI search" ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide), October 2026). Google also calls optimizing for its AI features "still SEO", meaning search engine optimization (SEO), which is [why Google ranking work carries further into AI Overviews than into ChatGPT](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/ai-overviews-vs-chatgpt-seo-ranking-signals). Google adds that its AI systems understand synonyms, so a page need not chase every way a buyer might phrase a question. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says "Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search" and names crawler access as the condition ([OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12627856-publishers-and-developers-faq), October 2026). ChatGPT ranks results on "multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information", with no format named ([OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt), October 2026). Perplexity documents its crawlers and its numbered citations, not a format ([Perplexity docs](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers) and [Help Center](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work), October 2026).

So the three engines differ in how they reach a page, not in what they want to find on it. That difference decides where per-engine work belongs: crawler access, index coverage and product data. None of it calls for a second version of the page, because none of the three engines asks for one.

## How does each engine reach your product page?

Each engine reaches your product page through a different door: ChatGPT through OpenAI's crawler and partner search providers, Perplexity through its own crawler and live fetches, and Gemini through Google's Search index.

**ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini each reach a product page through a different crawler or index**

| Engine | How it finds your page | robots.txt control | What it means for the page |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | OAI-SearchBot crawls for ChatGPT search, which sometimes also queries partner search providers; ChatGPT-User may visit a page when a user asks | OAI-SearchBot, about 24 hours; robots.txt rules may not apply to ChatGPT-User | Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps the site out of ChatGPT search answers |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot crawls for Perplexity search; Perplexity-User may visit a page when a user asks | PerplexityBot, up to 24 hours; Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt | A user-triggered visit reads the page as it is now |
| Gemini | Gemini Apps can ground answers in content from the Google Search index | Google-Extended, which does not affect Google Search | Gemini grounding can use a page only after Google indexes it |

Three doors, one room: the page can stay the same, so the per-engine work is access, not copy. [How fast a new page reaches Gemini answers](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/gemini-vs-chatgpt-new-page-indexing-speed) and [how often to refresh pages for Perplexity and ChatGPT](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/perplexity-vs-chatgpt-recency-and-update-cadence) have their own answers.

## Should you build llms.txt, AI files or special markup for each engine?

No: Google Search ignores AI-specific files, and Shopify already serves one for every store. Google says you don't need "new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown" to appear in its search, "as Google Search itself doesn't use them" ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide), October 2026). The same guide says structured data "isn't required for generative AI search". Shopify gives every store a default /agents.md file, and its /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt AI text files point at the same content ([Shopify developer changelog](https://shopify.dev/changelog/posts/customize-llmstxt-llms-fulltxt-and-agentsmd), May 2026). Google adds that keeping such a file "will neither harm nor help" a site in Google Search. So the file the per-engine vendors sell hardest, you already have, and OpenAI's and Perplexity's crawler pages do not say their crawlers read it.

FAQ schema fails the same test. FAQ markup no longer buys a Google search feature, because Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026 ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/updates), October 2026). [What FAQ content still adds over product copy](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/faq-content-vs-product-page-copy-ai-citations) is its own answer.

## What does one product page need to work in every engine?

One product page works in every engine when it carries your product facts as visible text, drawn from one source of truth. In our judgment that takes four things:

- **A direct answer near the top**, so the passage an engine lifts carries the point.
- **Specifications in structured fields**, such as Shopify metafields, rendered on the page as text. Google asks that important content be "available in textual form" and that structured data match the visible text ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), October 2026).
- **Honest limitations**, stated where a buyer would ask about them.
- **A visible last-updated date** that changes only when a fact changes.

Substance outweighs layout. Google says unique, useful content will likely shape a site's presence in generative AI search "more than any of the other suggestions" in its guide ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide), October 2026). Pages generated at volume without that substance can count as scaled content abuse ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies), October 2026), which is [why AI-generated blog volume hurts more than it helps](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/ai-generated-blogs-help-or-hurt-ai-search).

Some buyer questions span several products, so no single product page can answer them. [Comparison pages that name a competitor](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/competitor-comparison-pages-ai-recommendations) and [a category buyer's guide](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/category-buyers-guide-vs-product-page-optimization) handle those research prompts. This one-page approach is right for a mid-market merchant running one storefront and one content team, which in our judgment describes most $20M to $500M Shopify brands.

## Where does one product page for every engine stop being enough?

One product page for every engine stops being enough at shopping results, which AI channels build from product data rather than page copy. ChatGPT's product results use "structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers", and Shopify product data "is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog" ([OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490-shopping-with-chatgpt-search), October 2026). Shopify Catalog is the product feed Shopify shares with AI channels. OpenAI gets the prices it shows from third-party providers ([OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490-shopping-with-chatgpt-search), October 2026).

Microsoft Copilot needs no separate feed from a Shopify store. Microsoft says "Shopify merchants have been automatically enrolled" and "There are no additional onboarding steps required" ([Microsoft Advertising](https://about.ads.microsoft.com/en/solutions/technology/agentic-commerce), October 2026). Shopify confirms: "You don't need to do anything for your products to be discovered by Microsoft Copilot through Shopify Catalog" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/microsoft), October 2026). Microsoft's FAQ still says Copilot Checkout needs a Microsoft Merchant Center account ([Microsoft Advertising](https://about.ads.microsoft.com/en/solutions/technology/agentic-commerce), October 2026), so confirm the Microsoft Copilot channel in your Shopify admin. [What Microsoft Copilot reads compared with ChatGPT](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/copilot-shopping-vs-chatgpt-content-format) carries the detail. Google AI Mode and Gemini read Google Merchant Center instead ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/google), October 2026). So past the page, the remaining work is product data, not a second page.

## When is engine-specific optimization the wrong spend?

Engine-specific optimization is the wrong spend in four situations, because each one pays for a format that no engine asked for.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When a crawler is blocked.** OpenAI says sites opted out of its search crawler "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" ([OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots), October 2026). Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot and its published Internet Protocol (IP) ranges ([Perplexity](https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers), October 2026). On Shopify, robots.txt edits go through a robots.txt.liquid theme template, and Shopify warns that misuse "can result in loss of all traffic" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/seo/editing-robots-txt), October 2026). Check that template and your firewall first. For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, also confirm that Search Console still includes the site in generative AI features, which Google makes a condition of eligibility ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide), October 2026). In our judgment a stale robots.txt line costs more citations than content structure does.
> - **When a vendor sells engine-specific files or a visibility score.** No engine publishes a format, so a vendor's score "measures the vendor's own checklist", in the words of [Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/ai-answer-engine-visibility-geo-aeo).
> - **When nobody has measured each engine.** A visibility result logged without the model, date and sample cannot show an engine gap, because [the ChatGPT model version changes what a shopper sees](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/chatgpt-model-version-visibility-impact).
> - **When two pages would describe one product.** A second page for one engine doubles the places a price or spec can drift.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** The generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) category treats each engine as a separate optimization surface with its own file format. Google says otherwise in writing: optimizing for its generative AI search is still SEO (Google Search Central, October 2026). We think the per-engine framing exists because "write one good page" does not sell a monthly subscription.

**What we check first.** whether the product page, its structured data and the Shopify Catalog feed all read the same metafields. In our judgment that consistency matters more for citation than any AI-specific markup, though no engine publishes the citation data that would prove it.

## When this answer changes

- Google, OpenAI or Perplexity publishes a content format or markup that its AI answers prefer.
- Google Search starts reading llms.txt, or OpenAI or Perplexity documents that its crawler does.
- OpenAI names the partner search providers behind ChatGPT search, or changes what blocking OAI-SearchBot does.
- Google changes what Google-Extended controls for Gemini Apps grounding.
- Microsoft requires a separate Merchant Center feed from Shopify stores, or Shopify changes which AI channels read Shopify Catalog.
