# If our company runs 3 separate brands, do we need 3 separate Shopify Plus contracts at $2,300/month each, or can one contract cover all 3?

## Short answer

Shopify Plus covers one brand per contract, so three separate brands pay three Plus fees, from $6,900 a month on 3-year terms (Deploi arithmetic from [shopify.com/plus/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing), October 2026). Expansion stores must share the main brand's name and branding. An approved multi-brand agreement puts all three in one organization, each on its own Plus subscription ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026).

- **Plus fee per brand:** $2,300 a month on a 3-year term. $2,500 on a 1-year term. Shopify’s Plus pricing page: “you will need a separate Shopify Plus contract per brand” ([Shopify, Shopify Plus pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing); [Shopify Help Center, Shopify Plus plan](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/intro-to-shopify/pricing-plans/plans-features/shopify-plus-plan))
- **Three brands at list price:** $6,900 to $7,500 a month. $82,800 a year on 3-year terms or $90,000 on 1-year terms, before apps and before any multi-brand pricing from Shopify (Deploi arithmetic from the figures above) (Deploi arithmetic)
- **Expansion stores per contract:** 9 included, all for the main brand. Each must “Be identical to the main brand with respect to store name and other branding”. Stores past ten cost $300 a month each, or a revenue share ([Shopify Help Center, Overview of expansion stores for organizations on the Shopify Plus plan](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores); [Shopify, Shopify Plus pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing))
- **Apps and theme licenses:** Billed per store, not per organization. “Apps are billed on a per-store basis rather than for the entire organization”, and a theme license “can't be shared across stores” ([Shopify Help Center, Overview of expansion stores for organizations on the Shopify Plus plan](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores))

## Deploi's call

Three separate brands pay three Shopify Plus fees, because Shopify sells Plus one brand per contract and keeps expansion stores for the main brand. Budget three subscriptions, then spend your effort on the app stack, because that is the line that actually multiplies.

**BUILD: Run a store per brand in one organization when**

- The brands’ legal entities, catalogs, payments and staff all run separately.
- You can fund one shared set of theme sections and a data sync you own alongside the stores, as Deploi’s multi-store record advises ([Deploi decision record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/multi-store-architecture), October 2026).
- Shopify confirms the multi-brand agreement and each brand’s Plus price in writing ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026).

**CUSTOMIZE: Keep one store while**

- The brands share a catalog or a warehouse, because Shopify stores do not sync products or inventory ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026).
- Only the legal entity differs: eligible Plus organizations can sell from several entities in one store with Shopify Payments ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/onboarding/selling-with-multiple-entities), October 2026).
- The case for separate stores is a marketing preference rather than an operating fact.
- Shopify confirms in writing that one store selling every brand needs one Plus contract, since its pricing page asks for “a separate Shopify Plus contract per brand” ([shopify.com/plus/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing), October 2026).

## Can Shopify Plus expansion stores hold three separate brands?

Shopify Plus expansion stores cannot hold three separate brands, because Shopify keeps them for the main brand. The allowance is real: “Your main store and 9 expansion stores are included as part of your monthly platform fee” ([shopify.com/plus/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing), October 2026). Ten stores for one fee does not settle the question, because Shopify attaches conditions.

Under “Eligibility requirements for expansion stores on standard Shopify Plus plan contracts,” Shopify says expansion stores must adhere to all of these ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026):

- “Be extensions of the main brand.”
- “Be identical to the main brand with respect to store name and other branding.”
- “Carry the same types of goods and services as the main brand.”
- “Have a billing currency set to USD or INR.”

Three separate brands fail the second condition by definition, and usually the first and third. Shopify’s pre-approved types include the same brand in another country, language or currency, a business-to-business (B2B) wholesale store, an employee-only store and a physical retail location. [How Plus pricing treats expansion stores in other countries](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/plus-expansion-store-pricing-different-countries) covers the first of those.

## What does Shopify offer three separate brands instead?

Shopify offers three separate brands a Plus contract each, or a multi-brand agreement that groups them in one organization. The Plus pricing page says: “If you have multiple brands under the same company, you will need a separate Shopify Plus contract per brand” ([shopify.com/plus/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing), October 2026). The Help Center describes “a multi-brand agreement, which allows multiple brands under one organization but requires each brand to have its own separate Shopify Plus plan subscription” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026).

> Shopify’s two pages describe the same rule from two sides: the pricing page asks for a Plus contract per brand, and the Help Center’s multi-brand agreement still gives each brand its own Plus subscription. Both put a Plus fee on every brand, so ask Shopify in writing which paperwork your brands sign.

**Every route that fits three separate brands carries three Plus fees**

| Route | Plus fees | Fits three separate brands? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One Plus contract, other brands as expansion stores | 1 | No: fails the expansion store conditions |
| A separate Plus contract per brand | 3 | Yes: what the Plus pricing page requires |
| Multi-brand agreement | 3, one subscription per brand | Yes, if Shopify finds you eligible |

A multi-brand agreement buys one organization, where users and billing are managed “centrally across all stores” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026). It does not buy one subscription fee, so budget three.

## What do three Plus subscriptions cost at Shopify’s published prices?

Three Plus subscriptions cost $6,900 a month on 3-year terms and $7,500 a month on 1-year terms at Shopify’s published prices, before apps (Deploi arithmetic from [shopify.com/plus/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/plus/pricing), October 2026). That is $82,800 or $90,000 a year in platform fees alone.

**Shopify publishes the Plus fee per brand, the store allowance and the processor fee, but not the variable fee or multi-brand pricing**

| Line | Published figure (USD) |
| --- | --- |
| Plus fee, 3-year term | $2,300 a month per brand |
| Plus fee, 1-year term | $2,500 a month per brand |
| Stores in each Plus fee | Main store plus 9 expansion stores |
| Stores past ten | $300 a month per store, or a revenue share across all stores |
| Third-party processor fee | 0.2% per transaction |
| Variable platform fee | Not published |
| Multi-brand pricing | Not published; ask Shopify Support |

Those are list prices, not totals. For “more complex, higher-volume businesses, there might be a variable platform fee” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/intro-to-shopify/pricing-plans/plans-features/shopify-plus-plan), October 2026), and [how that fee treats expansion stores](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/plus-expansion-stores-variable-platform-fee) is its own answer. Card processing sits outside the three fees, so budget it separately. US Plus rates start at 2.25% + 30¢ on standard cards and 2.95% + 30¢ on premium cards, meaning business cards and American Express ([shopify.com/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/pricing), October 2026).

## Which costs multiply across three brand stores?

Everything Shopify bills per store multiplies across three brand stores, and apps are the largest of those lines. Shopify says “Apps are billed on a per-store basis rather than for the entire organization” and that a theme license “can't be shared across stores” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026). Three brands running the same twelve-app stack pay for thirty-six subscriptions (Deploi arithmetic).

Deploi’s per-store app billing record found no App Store listing that publishes an organization-wide license, because a subscription is charged per store install ([Deploi decision record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/per-store-app-subscription-billing), October 2026). So portfolio pricing is negotiated vendor by vendor, ideally before store two opens.

The theme license is small money by comparison. Deploi’s theme licensing record caps license spend at roughly $2,500 across five stores, as an illustrative estimate, and puts the real repeat cost in per-store customization ([Deploi decision record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/per-store-theme-license-costs), October 2026).

## Which four tests decide one store or three?

Four tests decide one store or three for a group of brands: legal entities, catalogs, payments and staff separation. You can run them before you talk to Shopify.

1. **Legal entities.** Separate books alone do not force separate stores. Eligible organizations on Shopify Plus or the Shopify Enterprise Commerce plan can sell from multiple entities “in a single store”, online and through Shopify point of sale (POS), with Shopify Payments ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/onboarding/selling-with-multiple-entities), October 2026). One catch applies to Managed Markets, Shopify’s merchant-of-record service for cross-border sales ([Shopify international pricing](https://www.shopify.com/international/pricing), October 2026): “If you're using managed markets, then you can't sell from multiple entities with Shopify Payments” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/onboarding/selling-with-multiple-entities), October 2026).
1. **Catalogs.** Shared stock across stores is the hard problem, because “Store settings, products, collections, and inventory aren't synced between stores” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026).
1. **Payments.** In one store, each entity “has its own Shopify Payments account, payout currency, and bank account”, so separate payouts do not need separate stores.
1. **Staff separation.** Each store “operates completely independently with its own separate data, settings, and configurations,” which suits brand teams that must not see each other’s orders.

If all four answers are “separate,” expect three Plus subscriptions, ideally under one organization. If three or four are “shared,” test one store with Shopify Markets and multiple entities first. [How multi-brand groups split business-to-business (B2B) stores](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/multi-brand-blended-vs-dedicated-b2b-architecture) applies the same logic to wholesale.

## When should you not split brands into separate stores?

Don’t split brands into separate Shopify stores when they share a catalog, when only the legal entity differs, or when nobody has priced the app stack once per store.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When the brands share a catalog.** You will build and maintain inventory sync forever, because Shopify stores do not share products or inventory ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/organization-settings/expansion-stores), October 2026).
> - **When the split is a marketing preference, not an operating fact.** Each store adds a subscription, an app stack and a theme to maintain, so it needs an operating reason.
> - **When only the legal entity differs.** An eligible Shopify Plus store can sell from several entities with Shopify Payments, unless it uses Managed Markets, Shopify’s merchant-of-record service for cross-border sales ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/onboarding/selling-with-multiple-entities), [Shopify international pricing](https://www.shopify.com/international/pricing), October 2026).
> - **When nobody has priced the app stack once per store.** In Deploi’s judgment, that number can exceed the platform fees, and it is the one that surprises people in month four.

## Deploi's point of view

**What we've seen.** Multi-brand scoping conversations almost always open with the contract question and almost never open with the catalog question. The catalog question is the one that decides whether the architecture works, and it is cheaper to answer wrong on paper than after three stores exist.

**Where we disagree.** The category answers this with "one Plus contract covers ten stores, so you are fine." That advice cites a real allowance and skips its published eligibility criteria, which is how brands end up building three stores under an arrangement they do not qualify for. Read the criteria before you read the allowance.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify drops the one-brand-per-contract rule from its Plus pricing page, or publishes multi-brand agreement pricing.
- Shopify changes the expansion store conditions, the 9 included expansion stores or the $300 a month price for stores past ten.
- Shopify changes the Plus price of $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term.
- An app vendor in your stack publishes an organization-wide license, which would cut the per-store multiplier.
- Shopify starts syncing products or inventory between stores in one organization.
- Multi-entity selling starts working alongside Managed Markets, which would widen the one-store route.
