## Short answer

TikTok's Events API (application programming interface) sends conversions to TikTok server to server, and Shopify brands running TikTok ads need no build for it. The TikTok app runs it at Enhanced or Maximum data sharing ([TikTok Business Help Center](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/data-sharing-tiktok-app-shopify), October 2026). Advertisers using it with the Pixel capture 19% more events on average, TikTok reports ([TikTok for Business](https://ads.tiktok.com/business/en/blog/shopify-ecommerce-integration-pixel-events-api), August 2023).

- **Events API in TikTok's Shopify app:** On at Enhanced or Maximum data sharing. Standard uses the TikTok Pixel alone; Enhanced adds Events API and Advanced Matching (TikTok Business Help Center, October 2026). ([TikTok Business Help Center, About Data Sharing on TikTok App on Shopify](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/data-sharing-tiktok-app-shopify))
- **TikTok's published averages:** 19% more events, 15% better cost per action. For advertisers using Pixel and Events API together, from TikTok's November 2022 to February 2023 analysis; no sample size or comparison group given (TikTok for Business, August 2023). ([TikTok for Business blog, Expanded Shopify integration strengthens ad performance for merchants](https://ads.tiktok.com/business/en/blog/shopify-ecommerce-integration-pixel-events-api))
- **Pixel and Events API deduplication:** After 5 minutes, within 48 hours, one event_id. TikTok merges or deduplicates copies with the same event and event_id that arrive after 5 minutes and within 48 hours of the first (TikTok Business Help Center, October 2026). ([TikTok Business Help Center, About event deduplication](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/event-deduplication))
- **TikTok app availability:** Not available in all markets. TikTok: "TikTok on Shopify is not available in all markets. Check the Shopify App store for availability." (TikTok Business Help Center, October 2026) ([TikTok Business Help Center, About TikTok on Shopify](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/tiktok-app-shopify))

## Deploi's call

For most Shopify brands running TikTok ads, TikTok's Events API (application programming interface) is a verification task, not a build. The TikTok app already runs it at the Enhanced or Maximum data-sharing level. We open TikTok Events Manager before we open a scoping document. In our experience Events API is usually already delivering, and the pixel is firing twice from code somebody pasted into the theme during a campaign.

**BUY: Use the TikTok app's Events API when**

- You run TikTok ads and the TikTok app is installed: Enhanced or Maximum data sharing adds Events API to the Pixel ([TikTok Business Help Center](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/data-sharing-tiktok-app-shopify), October 2026).
- The TikTok app is available in your market. TikTok says it "is not available in all markets" ([About TikTok on Shopify](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/tiktok-app-shopify), October 2026).
- Pixel and Events API copies of each event share one event ID, so TikTok can merge them.
- You want nothing beyond the app: Deploi's server-side tracking record scores a server-side build WAIT until paid spend moves real money, because "the platform channel integrations cover the basics" ([Deploi decision record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/server-side-tracking-and-data-layer), October 2026).

**WAIT: Fix or skip it first when**

- A hand-placed TikTok pixel still sits in the theme beside the app's Pixel.
- TikTok takes a small share of paid spend, so checking it can wait behind your larger channels.
- Your TikTok activity is organic only.
- A theme replacement lands this quarter: verify after it, not before.

## What is TikTok's Events API?

TikTok's Events API (application programming interface) is TikTok's connection for sending conversion data to TikTok from your systems, beside the browser Pixel. TikTok's Help Center says it "provides advertisers with a reliable connection between TikTok and advertiser's marketing data" ([TikTok Business Help Center](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/events-api), October 2026). That data can come from web, app and offline channels, such as stores and customer relationship management (CRM) systems. TikTok's 2023 Shopify announcement calls it "a server-to-server (S2S) integration" ([TikTok for Business](https://ads.tiktok.com/business/en/blog/shopify-ecommerce-integration-pixel-events-api), August 2023). The Events API is TikTok's counterpart to Meta's Conversions API: the same purchase, sent from a server rather than the shopper's browser.

TikTok gives this reason: "Connectivity issues and browser inconsistency can impact conversions reported via Pixel. With Events API, more conversions are reported and leveraged for measurement, optimization, and targeting" ([TikTok's Events API page](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/events-api), October 2026). So TikTok's recommended setup is to "Use both TikTok's Pixel and Events API together with Event Deduplication". [What server-side tracking does and does not recover](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/server-side-tracking-attribution-recovery-ios-cookies) across all platforms has its own answer.

## Does a Shopify brand running TikTok ads already have the Events API?

A Shopify brand running TikTok ads already has TikTok's Events API (application programming interface) if the TikTok app runs at the Enhanced or Maximum data-sharing level. TikTok's data-sharing page lists three levels ([TikTok Business Help Center](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/data-sharing-tiktok-app-shopify), October 2026). Standard uses the TikTok Pixel alone. Enhanced uses "TikTok Pixel, Events API, and Advanced Matching". TikTok says Advanced Matching "helps you match customer information, such as email and phone number, along with actions people take on your website". Maximum adds Shopify APIs and an in-app checkout in beta. TikTok's Shopify page promises "no changes to website code required" ([About TikTok on Shopify](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/tiktok-app-shopify), October 2026). One caveat for brands selling abroad: TikTok says the app "is not available in all markets".

**The TikTok app's data-sharing level, not a build, decides whether a Shopify store sends Events API data**

| Your setup | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| TikTok app at Enhanced or Maximum data sharing | Verify events in TikTok Events Manager. Nothing to build |
| TikTok app at Standard data sharing | One settings change: Standard is the Pixel alone |
| Agency-placed TikTok pixel in the theme as well as the app | Highest risk: two pixels plus Events API is how double counting starts |
| No TikTok spend | Skip it: TikTok uses Events API data for ad measurement, optimization and targeting |

## What does TikTok's 19% figure actually measure?

TikTok's 19% figure measures events captured, averaged across advertisers using TikTok Pixel and Events API (application programming interface) together. TikTok reports "19% more events captured" and a "15% improvement in cost per action" ([TikTok for Business](https://ads.tiktok.com/business/en/blog/shopify-ecommerce-integration-pixel-events-api), August 2023). TikTok published the averages on 17 August 2023, when it added Events API to its Shopify integration. It footnotes them to its "TikTok Web Events API Incremental Performance Benefit Analysis" for November 2022 to February 2023.

The post gives no sample size and does not name the comparison group. So treat the 19% as TikTok's average from one four-month window, not a forecast for your account. More events captured means TikTok sees more of the purchases that already happened, which is not the same as more purchases.

## How does TikTok deduplicate Pixel and Events API events?

TikTok deduplicates Pixel and Events API (application programming interface) copies only when both carry the same event and event ID (`event_id`), inside a 48-hour window. TikTok's rule: "You must share Event ID (event_id) as a parameter through both Pixel and Events API to ensure deduplication takes place" ([TikTok Business Help Center](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/event-deduplication), October 2026). TikTok describes three cases:

- Pixel copies with the same event and `event_id` are deduplicated within 48 hours of the first.
- Events API copies are deduplicated within the same 48-hour window.
- Pixel and Events API copies are merged or deduplicated when they arrive "after 5 minutes and within a 48-hour window from the first event".

TikTok's text does not say how it treats a copy that arrives inside the first five minutes. So do not rely on timing: send one event ID from both sides and check the deduplicated count in TikTok Events Manager. [The 48-hour ceiling on Meta and TikTok](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/server-side-tracking-limitations) sits with the other limits of server-side tracking.

## When should a brand not prioritize TikTok's Events API?

A brand should hold TikTok's Events API (application programming interface) back in four cases, because in each one the extra server events change no decision or make the count less reliable.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When TikTok takes a small share of paid spend.** Even TikTok's published average of 19% more events captured ([TikTok for Business blog](https://ads.tiktok.com/business/en/blog/shopify-ecommerce-integration-pixel-events-api), August 2023) changes no bid on a channel taking 5% of budget.
> - **When the pixel is duplicated.** Fix the duplicate first, or the Events API makes the reporting worse and more confident.
> - **When your TikTok activity is organic.** TikTok uses Events API data for ad "measurement, optimization, and targeting" ([TikTok Business Help Center](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/events-api), October 2026).
> - **When you are about to replace the theme.** Re-verify after the theme change, not before.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** TikTok's Events API gets written about as an advanced, optional upgrade for sophisticated advertisers. On Shopify it is a data-sharing setting, and framing it as a project is how it ends up on a roadmap instead of being switched on this afternoon. The advanced work is keeping duplicate events out, which nobody sells because it is unglamorous and quick.

**What we check first.** Hand-placed channel pixels left in the theme. In our judgment they are the most common source of inflated conversion counts, and the easiest thing on these pages to fix.

**What this page adds.** The parent asks whether server-side tracking recovers attribution at all. This answer covers TikTok alone: the Events API already runs in the TikTok app at the Enhanced or Maximum data-sharing level, TikTok's 19% figure comes with its window and its limits, and TikTok's deduplication rule has a five-minute clause that Meta's rule does not.

## When this answer changes

- TikTok changes which data-sharing levels in its Shopify app include Events API.
- TikTok changes its deduplication rule, or the five-minute and 48-hour windows in it.
- TikTok publishes a newer Events API benchmark with its sample size and comparison group.
- The TikTok app becomes available, or stops being available, in one of your markets.
- A theme change adds or removes a hand-placed TikTok pixel.
