# Do I still need a paid translation app if my Shopify brand only sells in English-speaking markets (US, UK, Canada, Australia)?

## Short answer

English-only brands selling in the US, UK, Canada and Australia need no paid translation app. Translate & Adapt, which is free ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/translate-and-adapt)), adapts wording per market without adding a language ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/requirements), October 2026). Theme content varies by market only on Advanced or higher ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/customizations/online-store)), so the real work is market configuration.

- **Translate & Adapt price:** Free. Adapts spelling and messaging between markets that share a language; adapting in your default language needs no second language ([Shopify App Store, Shopify Translate & Adapt](https://apps.shopify.com/translate-and-adapt); [Shopify Help Center, Requirements and considerations for using the Translate & Adapt app](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/requirements))
- **Per-market theme content:** Advanced plan or higher. On Basic and Grow, homepage banners, announcement bars and block content can't differ by market, even with Translate & Adapt ([Shopify Help Center, Customizing online store for markets](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/customizations/online-store))
- **Published market limit:** None stated by Shopify. Creating regional markets is free on every plan; the per-plan counts that circulate come from a community member's post, not from Shopify ([Shopify Help Center, Requirements and considerations for using markets](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/getting-started/requirements-and-considerations); [Shopify developer community, Included markets per plan](https://community.shopify.dev/t/included-markets-per-plan/15121))
- **Currency conversion fee:** 1.5% for a US store. Shopify's Help Center says 2% for stores outside the US, while its international pricing page shows 1.5% per transaction ([Shopify Help Center, Fees and costs](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/pricing/fees); [Shopify, Pricing for Shopify's international sales tools and Shopify Managed Markets](https://www.shopify.com/international/pricing))

## Deploi's call

Do not buy a translation app for this. Buy nothing, spend the money on market configuration, and use the free Adapt half of the native tool for the spelling and copy variants.

**WAIT: Skip the paid translation app when**

- Every market reads English, so Translate & Adapt adapts spelling and wording per market without a second language ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/requirements), October 2026).
- Your store runs on Advanced or Plus, or your banners and announcement bars can match across markets ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/customizations/online-store), October 2026).
- You sell in one language, which [Deploi's translation record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/translation) scores WAIT: nothing to buy, nothing to build (October 2026).

**BUY: Pay for a workflow tool only when**

- Legal or brand must approve each market-specific wording change before it goes live.
- Outside editors must be kept to one market's wording: Shopify can limit an account to the Translate & Adapt app ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/users/roles/permissions/store-permissions), October 2026) but can't assign permissions per market ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/getting-started/requirements-and-considerations), October 2026).

## Which Translate & Adapt feature serves English-only markets?

The adapt half of Translate & Adapt serves English-only markets, because it changes wording per market without adding a language. Shopify's listing names it: "Adapt content to reflect spelling and messaging variations between markets" ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/translate-and-adapt), October 2026). To adapt content in your store's default language, "you don't need to add another language" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/requirements), October 2026). Shopify lets you customize content in the default language once that language is added to multiple markets ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/manual-translation), October 2026).

So colour and color, trousers and pants, autumn and fall, and a Jumpers menu title in the UK beside Sweaters in the US all sit in one English store. Adapting uses none of Translate & Adapt's automatic-translation allowance, because no second language is added. That means [the limits that decide Translate & Adapt for a multi-language store](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/translate-and-adapt-vs-paid-translation-apps) don't bind here: they are about languages, and an English-only brand adds none.

## Which Shopify plan does market-specific English content need?

Market-specific English content needs the Advanced plan or higher once it reaches your theme. Shopify says "Per-market theme customization requires the Advanced plan or higher" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/customizations/online-store), October 2026). It adds that "Homepage banners, announcement bars, and block content can't differ between markets on the Basic or Grow plans" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/customizations/online-store), October 2026). That holds "even if you use the Translate & Adapt app for market-specific wording for the same language". Global theme settings such as colors and typography can't vary by market on any plan.

So a brand on Advanced or Shopify Plus can run a UK banner and an Australian banner side by side. Translate & Adapt adds no app fee, because the app itself is free ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/translate-and-adapt), October 2026). A brand on Basic or Grow shows the same homepage banners and announcement bars in every market. Check the plan before anyone designs market-specific campaigns.

## What actually needs doing for the US, UK, Canada and Australia?

Market configuration, not translation, is what actually needs doing for the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Shopify Markets lets each market override your store's defaults for pricing, currency, theme content, domains and tax display ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/customizations), October 2026), so most of the work is settings.

**Four English-speaking markets need market settings and wording adaptation, not a translation app**

| Task | Where it lives | Cost |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Currency, prices and domain per market | Shopify Markets | No charge to create markets; a currency conversion fee on converted sales |
| Spelling and wording variants | Translate & Adapt | Free |
| Theme content per market | Theme editor | Advanced plan or higher |
| Duties and import taxes | Shopify Markets, or Managed Markets | Shopify Markets: 0.5% per transaction as an optional add-on (regular fee 0.85% with Shopify Payments); Managed Markets: 3.5% per transaction, 3.25% on Plus, plus currency conversion |
| Sizing, compliance copy and legal pages | Manual, per market | Your team's time |

## How many markets can a four-country brand open?

Shopify publishes no market count for any plan, so a four-country brand should get its number in writing. Shopify's markets requirements page names no limit and says "Creating Regional markets to help you to sell internationally is free for all Shopify plans" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/getting-started/requirements-and-considerations), October 2026). The per-plan figures that circulate, 3 markets on Basic and Grow, 3 included and up to 50 on Advanced, and 50 on Plus, come from a community member's post. Shopify's staff reply in that thread says only that the number "correlates to their plan type" ([Shopify developer community](https://community.shopify.dev/t/included-markets-per-plan/15121), May 2025).

So a US brand adding the UK, Canada and Australia should confirm its plan's count with Shopify before launch, because the circulating figure for Basic and Grow is three. Languages are a separate setting with their own limits, covered in [how Shopify's language and market limits differ](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/multi-language-vs-multi-market-difference).

## Where does an English-only brand still get caught out?

An English-only brand still gets caught out on checkout wording, sizing, search terms and Quebec, because none of them is a translation-app problem.

- **Checkout wording.** Shopify pre-translates checkout into 33 languages ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/requirements), October 2026) and lets you edit its default text in Settings > Checkout ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/checkout-language), October 2026). Beyond that, Shopify says "Making additional customizations to the language in the checkout requires third-party apps", so market-specific checkout wording is a checkout customization, not a translation task. Customizing checkout per market needs Advanced or higher, and per-market checkout blocks need Plus ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/getting-started/requirements-and-considerations), October 2026).
- **Sizing and units.** Neither Shopify Markets nor Translate & Adapt converts a US size chart to a UK one. That is a metafield and a theme change.
- **Search and ads.** Adapting "pants" to "trousers" changes what a product ranks for in that market, so tell your paid-search team when you do it.
- **Quebec.** Quebec's Charter of the French language says catalogues, order forms and similar documents available to the public "must be drawn up in French" ([Légis Québec](https://www.legisquebec.gouv.qc.ca/fr/document/lc/c-11?langCont=en), October 2026). Ask counsel whether that reaches your store. If it does, French is one added language, inside the two languages Translate & Adapt translates automatically by default for US and Canadian stores ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/automatic-translation), October 2026). Shopify's automatic translation skips legal policies, so translate those by hand ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/automatic-translation), October 2026).

## When would an English-only brand want a paid app anyway?

An English-only brand wants a paid app in one case: an approval workflow. Translate & Adapt's listing offers a side-by-side editor to "review translations" ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/translate-and-adapt), October 2026) but names no approval step. Shopify's store permissions list no permission for translations or languages either ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/users/roles/permissions/store-permissions), October 2026). So if legal or brand must approve every market-specific wording change before it goes live, that is a workflow purchase. It applies whether the "translation" is English to English or English to Japanese.

> **When not to buy a translation app for English-speaking markets**
> - **When the gap is market configuration.** Currency, domains, prices and duties live in Shopify Markets, not in a translation app.
> - **When the gap is theme content on Basic or Grow.** Shopify's plan rule decides it: per-market theme customization requires Advanced or higher.
> - **When the copy that differs sits in checkout.** That is a checkout customization, priced and scoped separately from translation.
> - **When nobody has to approve wording.** Without an approval step, Translate & Adapt covers every English variant at no charge.

## Deploi's point of view

**What we've seen.** English-speaking market launches fail on shipping rules, duty handling and returns policy, never on language. Teams that budget for a translation app for these markets have usually not yet costed the duties question, which is the one with a percentage attached.

**Where we disagree.** Translation apps meter by language, so treating English variants as languages turns a free native feature into a billable line. Translate & Adapt adapts English wording across markets at no charge, though per-market theme and checkout customization needs the Advanced plan or higher.

**What this page adds.** that the native tool's "adapt" half is the whole answer for same-language multi-country selling on Advanced and Plus, and that it consumes none of the automatic-translation allowance the parent treats as the binding constraint.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify moves per-market theme customization below the Advanced plan.
- Shopify publishes a market count for each plan.
- Shopify adds an approval step or a translation permission to Translate & Adapt.
- Shopify settles its currency conversion fee outside the US: 1.5% on its international pricing page, 2% in its Help Center.
- Quebec changes how the Charter of the French language applies to online stores.
