# Is switching from a third-party translation app to Shopify's own native Translate & Adapt a genuine cost-optimization move, or does it just shift the cost elsewhere?

## Short answer

Switching to Shopify Translate & Adapt saves the whole subscription only within its automatic-language limit; past it, the cost moves into translation labor. Translate & Adapt is free ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/translate-and-adapt), October 2026). Its automatic limit is two languages by default in the US and Canada, and eight for stores in 12 European countries ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/automatic-translation), October 2026). Further languages need manual translation, which is why the cost shifts.

- **Translate & Adapt price:** Free. Unlimited manual translations; 4.4 stars on about 1,400 App Store reviews; Shopify's listing says it can "auto-translate up to two languages for free" ([Shopify App Store, Shopify Translate & Adapt](https://apps.shopify.com/translate-and-adapt))
- **Automatic languages by store country:** 2 by default; 8 in 12 European countries. Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK, plus any store whose app shows "Translate now"; those stores also get weekly Auto-sync ([Shopify Help Center, Translating content automatically using the Translate & Adapt app](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/automatic-translation))
- **Weglot Pro, the comparison plan:** $87 a month for 5 languages. 200,000 translated words across all languages; Weglot runs from $17 for 1 language to $769 for 20, and bills in euros (Pro is €79) ([Weglot, Pricing](https://www.weglot.com/pricing); [Weglot, Weglot: AI Translation & SEO on the Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/weglot))
- **Selling-language ceiling:** 20 languages below Plus, 30 on Plus. Shopify's platform limit on the languages a store sells in, whichever translation tool fills them ([Shopify Help Center, Requirements and considerations for selling in multiple languages](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/requirements))

## Deploi's call

The switch converts a software fee into translation labor: a real saving within Translate & Adapt's automatic-language limit, two languages for a US or Canadian store, and a cost transfer past it. Whoever owns keeping translations current after launch determines whether this switch saves money or just relocates it onto a marketing coordinator's week. Translation is a content-operations problem wearing a software costume.

**WAIT: Switch to Translate & Adapt alone when**

- You publish two translated languages or fewer from a US or Canadian store, or up to eight from a store in one of the 12 European countries Shopify lists ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/automatic-translation), October 2026).
- Your catalog is stable, so running translation again after edits stays a small job.
- Your translated copy lives in Shopify's own content: products, collections, pages, metafields and theme text.
- A one-locale trial turns up no workflow gap your team can name and price, the test [Deploi's Langify vs. Translate & Adapt record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/langify-vs-translate-adapt) sets (October 2026).

**BUY: Keep the paid translation app when**

- You run more languages than Translate & Adapt translates automatically for your store, and you launch products weekly.
- Customers see app-generated copy that Translate & Adapt cannot translate ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/requirements), October 2026).
- Someone must sign off translations before they go live, or a glossary must hold brand terms constant.
- The subscription costs less than the hours it saves: Weglot Pro is $87 a month for five languages ([Weglot](https://www.weglot.com/pricing), October 2026).

## What does switching from a paid translation app to Translate & Adapt save?

Switching from a paid translation app to Shopify Translate & Adapt saves the app's whole subscription, because Translate & Adapt is free ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/translate-and-adapt), October 2026). Among [the paid apps that free native Shopify features replace](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/paid-apps-to-free-native-features-monthly-savings), it is the swap whose cost can keep recurring, as translation labor rather than a one-off build.

**Translate & Adapt is free with a capped automatic allowance; Weglot charges by languages and words**

| Criterion | Shopify Translate & Adapt | Weglot, a representative paid app |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Price (USD a month) | Free | $17 for 1 language to $769 for 20; Pro is $87 for 5 |
| Automatic translation | 2 languages by default; 8 for stores in 12 European countries | Up to the plan's word cap across all languages: 200,000 words on Pro |
| Reach | Shopify translatable content, including metafields, search engine optimization (SEO) fields and URL handles; not app content stored elsewhere | The whole storefront, including third-party apps and checkout, per Weglot |
| Languages you can sell in | 20 below Shopify Plus, 30 on Plus | 1 to 20 by plan |
| App Store rating | 4.4 stars, about 1,400 reviews | 4.5 stars, more than 800 reviews |

## Where does the cost go past Translate & Adapt's automatic-language limit?

Past Translate & Adapt's automatic-language limit, the cost moves from a subscription to translation labor, because Translate & Adapt adds further languages only as manual translations ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/automatic-translation), October 2026). For a store in the US or Canada the limit is two languages by default. Language three onward then falls to a machine-translation tool you paste from, a freelancer, or [an agency that maintains translations for you](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/translation-maintenance-agency-vs-translate-and-adapt). Professional translation ordered through Weglot starts at €0.13 a word ([Weglot](https://www.weglot.com/pricing), October 2026), so every catalog expansion lands as a per-word bill rather than a flat fee.

> **Shopify's pages give different automatic-language limits**
> Translate & Adapt's App Store listing says it can "auto-translate up to two languages for free" ([Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/translate-and-adapt), October 2026). Shopify's Help Center allows two languages in most countries ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/automatic-translation), October 2026). It allows eight for stores in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. It also allows eight wherever the Translate & Adapt app displays "Translate now" for a store.

## What does a paid translation app do that Translate & Adapt leaves to your team?

A paid translation app sells reach and workflow that Translate & Adapt leaves to your team. On reach, Translate & Adapt cannot translate third-party app content stored outside Shopify's translatable resources and storefront language files ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/requirements), October 2026). Weglot says it translates third-party apps such as PageFly, Klaviyo, Yotpo and GemPages ([Weglot](https://www.weglot.com/integrations/shopify-translation-app), October 2026). Paid apps differ here, so check [which paid apps reach app content, and from which price tier](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/langify-vs-langshop-vs-native-translation) before you keep one.

On workflow, the gap is keeping translations current. Shopify's Admin API (application programming interface) marks a translation as outdated when its source changes ([Shopify developer docs](https://shopify.dev/docs/api/admin-graphql/latest/objects/Translation), October 2026). Translate & Adapt's weekly Auto-sync refreshes machine translations only in 12 European countries and wherever the app displays "Translate now" ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/automatic-translation), October 2026). Elsewhere, someone has to run translation again after every edit. Automatic translation never changes translations you added by hand, so hand-edited copy keeps its old wording when the source changes. One merchant with over 7,000 products called finding the edited ones "a bit of nightmare" ([Shopify Community](https://community.shopify.com/t/translate-and-adapt-re-translation/415763), May 2025). Weglot says it "automatically detects and translates your website content" ([Weglot](https://www.weglot.com/integrations/shopify-translation-app), October 2026). Its dashboard lets a team edit, review and set glossary rules ([Weglot's App Store listing](https://apps.shopify.com/weglot), October 2026).

## Who should switch, and who should stay on the paid app?

Stores within Translate & Adapt's automatic-language limit should switch; stores past it that launch weekly should stay. Switch when all three hold:

- You run two translated languages, or up to eight from a store in one of the 12 European countries Shopify's Help Center lists ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/automatic-translation), October 2026).
- Your catalog is stable.
- Your content lives in native Shopify objects such as products, collections and pages.

That merchant saves the full subscription and takes on almost nothing. In our judgment the common case is a Canadian or US brand selling in English plus one European language.

Stay on the paid app if you run more languages than Translate & Adapt translates automatically for your store, launch products weekly, or depend on translated app-generated content. There the subscription buys workflow: glossaries, reviewer roles and change detection on updated source copy. Replacing it with a native editor means someone on your team owns that workflow by hand. Past roughly three languages, [Deploi's Langify vs. Translate & Adapt record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/langify-vs-translate-adapt) adds a third path: an owned AI translation pipeline that writes into Shopify's own storage (October 2026).

## When is switching to Translate & Adapt the wrong move?

Switching to Translate & Adapt is the wrong move when the fee it saves is small next to the work it hands back to your team.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When a US or Canadian store runs four or more languages and changes its catalog weekly.** Saving Weglot Pro's $87 a month ([Weglot](https://www.weglot.com/pricing), October 2026) is a false economy there, and we would not recommend it.
> - **When customers see app-generated copy in translated markets.** Translate & Adapt cannot reach content an app stores outside Shopify's translatable resources ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/languages/translate-adapt-app/requirements), October 2026), so those markets show untranslated widgets.
> - **When nobody owns re-translation after launch.** Source copy changes, the translation does not, and a market quietly reads wrong for a quarter.
> - **Before you have exported your translations and checked where they live.** [What to check before cancelling Langify or a similar app](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/langify-vs-free-translate-and-adapt) starts with that export.

## Deploi's point of view

**What we've seen.** The failure mode after a switch is drift. Source copy changes, the translation doesn't, and nobody notices for a quarter because nothing breaks: the page just quietly reads wrong in one market. Paid tools such as Weglot detect and translate changed copy automatically; Translate & Adapt refreshes its machine translations only when someone runs it, or weekly with Auto-sync where Shopify offers it, and never touches manual ones.

**Where we disagree.** "Native is free" is the wrong comparison. The comparison is total cost of keeping four locales accurate for a year, and on that basis native wins clearly at two languages and, for a store held to two automatic languages, loses at five.

**What this page adds.** The parent prices native swaps that end in a one-off build. Translation is the swap whose cost keeps recurring: past Translate & Adapt's automatic-language limit, the subscription turns into translation labor.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify extends Translate & Adapt's eight-language automatic tier or weekly Auto-sync to stores in the US and Canada.
- Translate & Adapt's App Store listing and Help Center agree on one automatic-language limit.
- Shopify adds review states, glossary rules or a stale-translation queue to the Translate & Adapt editor.
- Weglot changes its plan prices, word caps or euro billing.
- Shopify changes the 20-language limit below Plus or the 30-language limit on Plus.
