# How much does the typical mid-market Shopify store actually overspend per month on apps that are installed but genuinely unused?

## Short answer

Installed-but-unused Shopify app spend has no credible published benchmark, because the figures in circulation estimate total app spend from listed prices, not bills. Eightx's 2026 study puts total app spend at $20,000 to $80,000 a month for $20M to $100M brands, blending Storeleads' modeled panel with vendor pricing ([Eightx study](https://eightx.co/blog/average-ecommerce-shopify-app-spend-by-revenue-band-2026), June 2026). Your unused-app number comes from auditing your bills.

- **Total app spend, $20M to $100M brands:** $20,000 to $80,000 a month. Eightx's benchmark ladder, built from Storeleads' 3.59M-store panel, Klaviyo's disclosures, vendor price lists and agency benchmarks. It measures total spend, not unused spend ([Eightx, Average Shopify app spend by revenue band, 2026](https://eightx.co/blog/average-ecommerce-shopify-app-spend-by-revenue-band-2026))
- **Stores modeled above $1,000 a month:** 1,602 of 3,593,277 (0.04%). Storeleads models app spend from published plan pricing, so negotiated enterprise contracts are under-counted, per Eightx's May 2026 report ([Eightx, Shopify app bloat report 2026](https://eightx.co/blog/shopify-app-bloat-report-2026))
- **Stores with 8 or more detected apps:** 29.9% of 1,565,564 stores with app data. StoreInspect detects apps from storefront code, so apps that run server-side are missed. The figure updates daily; this is the 3 October 2026 observation ([StoreInspect, State of Shopify 2026](https://storeinspect.com/report/state-of-shopify))
- **App charges outside the Shopify bill:** Not shown on your Shopify bill. Shopify: “Some third-party apps charge you directly outside of Shopify.” Klaviyo's and Recharge's listings say their charges may be billed separately from the Shopify invoice ([Shopify Help Center, App charges on your Shopify bills](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/manage-billing/billing-charges/types-of-charges/third-party-charges/app-charges); [Klaviyo, Klaviyo: Email Marketing & SMS on the Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/klaviyo-email-marketing); [Recharge, Recharge Subscriptions App on the Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/subscription-payments))

## Deploi's call

Chasing a benchmark for unused app spend is the wrong instinct, because none exists. There is no median to be above or below; there is only your bill, and it takes a fortnight to read properly. A store that audits quarterly beats a store that knows the industry average.

**CUSTOMIZE: Count your own unused-app spend when**

- You run more than roughly 10 apps, where Deploi's app-stack record moves from a bundle app to an audit ([Deploi decision record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/app-stack-consolidation-and-cost-audit), October 2026).
- Your apps bill in more than one place: the Shopify bill, separate one-time invoices and vendors' own invoices ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/manage-billing/billing-charges/types-of-charges/third-party-charges/app-charges), October 2026), so no single statement shows the total.
- Nobody can name an owner for every app on Settings > Billing.

**WAIT: Skip the full count while**

- You run fewer than roughly 10 apps: the record treats a one-hour pass on Settings > Billing as the audit ([Deploi decision record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/app-stack-consolidation-and-cost-audit), October 2026).
- Peak season is close, because an uninstall that breaks a theme snippet costs more in peak than the app does.

## Why is there no benchmark for unused Shopify app spend?

There is no benchmark for unused Shopify app spend because no outside panel sees a store's full bill or knows which apps its team uses. Shopify's own bill is incomplete: “Some third-party apps charge you directly outside of Shopify,” and those charges “aren't displayed on your Shopify bill” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/manage-billing/billing-charges/types-of-charges/third-party-charges/app-charges), October 2026). The email app Klaviyo says on its listing that charges “may be billed by Klaviyo separately from your Shopify invoice” ([Klaviyo on the Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/klaviyo-email-marketing), October 2026), and the subscription app Recharge says the same ([Recharge on the Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/subscription-payments), October 2026).

“Unused” is not a field anywhere either. An app with no admin logins this quarter may still render a widget that converts, and an app your team opens daily may produce nothing. So [the monthly saving from swapping paid apps for native features](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/paid-apps-to-free-native-features-monthly-savings) has to start from your own bills, not from an industry average.

## What do the published Shopify app-spend figures actually measure?

The published Shopify app-spend figures measure listed prices or storefront code, not bills or use, so none of them measures unused apps.

**Each published figure measures app prices or app counts, not unused app spend**

| Source | Figure | What it measures |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Eightx, June 2026 | $20,000 to $80,000 a month in total, at $20M to $100M in revenue | A ladder built from Storeleads' modeled panel, Klaviyo's disclosures, vendor pricing and agency benchmarks |
| Eightx from Storeleads, May 2026 | 1,602 of 3,593,277 stores (0.04%) spend over $1,000 a month | Spend modeled from published plan pricing, so negotiated enterprise contracts are under-counted |
| Eightx, May 2026 | Median active-to-installed ratio under 60 percent, for stores spending over $100 a month | Stated in the summary; the methods section does not say how app use was measured |
| StoreInspect, October 2026 | 29.9% of 1,565,564 stores with app data run 8 or more detected apps | Apps visible in storefront code; server-side apps are missed |

Storeleads, the store-tracking panel behind both Eightx reports, shows why the second row undercounts: it puts tracked app spend at $3 to $601 a month for five top Shopify Plus brands ([Eightx bloat report](https://eightx.co/blog/shopify-app-bloat-report-2026), May 2026), because negotiated contracts never show up as list prices. And the third row, the only figure that sounds like an unused-app benchmark, states no method for measuring use.

## How do you produce your own unused-app number?

You produce your own unused-app number by pricing every app nobody uses from your own bills, which takes reconciliation rather than a report.

1. **Pull 12 months of app charges.** Subscription and usage charges sit on your regular Shopify bill, and one-time charges “are displayed on separate invoices” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/manage-billing/billing-charges/types-of-charges/third-party-charges/app-charges), October 2026).
1. **Add what Shopify does not bill.** Match card statements and vendor invoices for apps that charge outside Shopify, such as Klaviyo and Recharge ([Klaviyo listing](https://apps.shopify.com/klaviyo-email-marketing), [Recharge listing](https://apps.shopify.com/subscription-payments), October 2026).
1. **Look for doubles first.** Two apps doing one job show on the install list, while disuse needs an owner to admit it, so redundancy is the waste you can prove fastest.
1. **Tag each app by use.** Renders on the storefront, opened in the admin weekly, opened monthly, or no named owner.
1. **Sum the apps nobody owns.** The monthly charges of apps with no owner and no storefront footprint are your unused-app figure.
1. **Cancel in two places.** Uninstalling a paid app “cancels future recurring charges, but you might still be billed for the current billing cycle,” and it “doesn't cancel external charges” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/apps/uninstalling-apps), October 2026). So end any vendor contract separately.

That count is the first phase of [a full app-stack audit](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/app-stack-audit-engagement-deliverables), which adds script attribution and an install policy. [How many apps is too many](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/too-many-apps-performance-threshold) covers the page-speed side.

## When is counting unused apps the wrong place to look?

Counting unused apps is the wrong place to look when the money sits in a few large contracts, or when the store is small enough that a quick read of the bill does the job.

> **When not to do this**
> - **When you run fewer than roughly 10 apps.** Our app-stack record treats a one-hour pass on Settings > Billing as the audit at that size ([Deploi decision record](https://deploi.ca/shopify/build-vs-buy/app-stack-consolidation-and-cost-audit), October 2026), so a full count costs more than it finds.
> - **When most of the bill is a few enterprise contracts.** Eightx argues that above $20M in revenue the audit “is not ‘cut apps’ but ‘negotiate contracts’” ([Eightx](https://eightx.co/blog/average-ecommerce-shopify-app-spend-by-revenue-band-2026), June 2026), so the larger lever is the rate you pay your biggest vendors.
> - **When the app's code still sits in your theme.** “Some apps add code to your online store theme that isn't automatically removed when you uninstall the app” ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/apps/uninstalling-apps), October 2026), so check theme files before you book the saving.
> - **When the real goal is fewer vendors.** [Bundling email, text messages and reviews onto one platform](https://deploi.ca/shopify/faq/point-solution-apps-vs-bundled-platforms-cost) is a different lever with a different payoff.

## Deploi's point of view

**Where we disagree.** The app-bloat literature frames this as a page-speed story. The speed tax is real, but at mid-market the governance failure is the expensive part: nobody owns the install list, so the bill compounds quietly while the speed cost stays roughly flat.

**What we look for first.** In an app audit we look first for two apps doing one job, installed months apart by two different people, both live and both billing. Then we look for an app nobody can uninstall because a theme snippet still references it.

**What this page adds.** The parent's savings math assumes you know your current app bill. This page shows that no unused-app benchmark can be sourced, what the circulating figures actually measure, and how to count your own from Shopify's billing rules.

## When this answer changes

- Shopify adds app-usage or category data to Settings > Billing, or puts every app charge on one invoice.
- Eightx, Storeleads or StoreInspect publish an unused-app figure with a stated method for measuring use.
- Klaviyo or Recharge change whether they bill outside the Shopify invoice.
- Your app count passes roughly 10, the audit threshold in Deploi's app-stack record.
