What do Contentful and Sanity actually cost as the team, locales and content volume grow?

Short answer

Contentful Lite stays flat at a listed $300 a month to 20 users, while Sanity Growth rises $15 per seat to $750 at 50 seats (Deploi arithmetic from Contentful pricing and Sanity pricing, October 2026). Contentful then needs an Enterprise quote at the 21st user or 4th locale, Sanity at the 51st seat or 50,001st document.

Deploi’s call

Price the axis you will grow on, not the entry plan. If your team will pass 20 editors or 3 locales, Sanity Growth stays self-serve at a published price while Contentful becomes an Enterprise negotiation, as of October 2026. If your growth is languages stored as separate Sanity documents, Sanity's document cap arrives first and Contentful Lite can be the smaller bill.

SanitySanity Growth is the better price fit when

  • You need a 21st user or a 4th locale, because Contentful's pricing page points to an unpublished Enterprise quote while Sanity's lists Growth at $15 a seat up to 50 seats and no locale fee, as of October 2026.
  • You need 26 to 50 content types, because Contentful's pricing page then adds the $850 a month Lite Space while Sanity charges nothing per content type, as of October 2026.
  • Your documents, drafts included, stay under 50,000, so content volume needs at most Sanity's $299 a month quota add-on as of October 2026.

OtherContentful Lite costs less than Sanity Growth when

  • You translate entries into separate Sanity documents and pass 25,000, because Contentful keeps every locale in one record: 10 editors, 8,000 entries and 3 locales cost $300 on Lite and $449 on Growth as of October 2026 (Deploi arithmetic from both pricing pages).
  • One content model needs 4 environments, because Lite plus its $850 Lite Space ($1,150) beats Sanity's $2,013 or more with two $999 extra datasets, as of October 2026 (Deploi arithmetic).
  • A 10-editor team serves over 1,100 GB a month, because Contentful charges $0.15 per extra GB against Sanity's $0.30 as of October 2026 (Deploi arithmetic from both pricing pages), and Sanity's bandwidth also counts request traffic.

How do Contentful and Sanity charge, and what does each one count?

Contentful charges a flat plan plus Space add-ons and counts records, while Sanity charges per seat plus usage and counts documents. Entry prices sit in the Sanity vs Contentful comparison. Contentful's records are "a combined count of Entries + Assets in your space" (Contentful Spaces help, October 2026), with a separate limit per environment (Contentful environments FAQ). Sanity counts documents, drafts included, across all datasets, and leaves image and file assets out (Sanity plans and payments, October 2026).

Contentful invoices monthly (Contentful billing FAQ), and Sanity's self-serve plans pay monthly by card with no minimum term (Sanity pricing, October 2026).

What happens to each bill as your team grows?

Contentful's bill stays at $300 a month from 1 to 20 users and then needs an Enterprise quote, while Sanity's grows by $15 a seat to $750 at 50 seats (Deploi arithmetic from Contentful pricing and Sanity pricing, October 2026). Contentful Free covers 10 users, but "the Free plan may only be used to test and learn" (Contentful usage limits, October 2026), so a live site starts on Lite. Sanity users with the Viewer role take no seat, so reviewers who only read cost nothing (how Sanity charges for seats).

Roles grow on a different curve. Contentful Lite includes 3 roles (Contentful pricing) and Sanity Growth 5; custom roles need Enterprise on Sanity (Sanity roles docs, October 2026).

What happens to each bill as you add locales?

Contentful includes 2 locales on Free and 3 on Lite, so a 4th locale means an Enterprise quote; Sanity charges nothing per locale on any plan (Contentful pricing; Sanity pricing, October 2026). By default Contentful publishes all of an entry's locales together, and publishing one locale on its own "is only available on specific pricing plans" (Contentful locale-based publishing, October 2026). On Sanity the cost of a locale moves into quota, and your localization model decides which quota:

  • Field-level keeps every language in one document, which publishes all languages together (Sanity localization docs, October 2026). Wrapping fields in language objects multiplies attributes (unique attribute and datatype pairs) toward Growth's 10,000 per dataset (Sanity attribute limit).
  • Document-level lets each language publish alone but stores one document per language plus a metadata document per entry, so 3 languages make 4 documents per entry toward 25,000 (Sanity's plugin docs).

The Contentful migration plan shows an 8,000-entry space reaching 32,000 documents in 3 locales; the localization review compares the models.

What happens to each bill as content types and content volume grow?

Contentful's bill steps from $300 to $1,150 a month at the 26th content type or the 10,001st record in an environment, while Sanity adds $299 a month only at the 25,001st document (Deploi arithmetic from Contentful pricing and Sanity pricing, October 2026).

Sanity charges nothing per content type within the attribute limit. Growth includes 25,000 documents with no document overage, and the $299 a month Increased quota add-on raises the total to 50,000 (Sanity plans and payments; Sanity add-ons, October 2026). Growth includes 2 datasets, and each extra costs $999 a month, up to 4 datasets in all (what an extra dataset costs).

Sanity's comparison page claims a setup with 5 users and 30 content types "could be significantly more affordable" on Growth than on Lite with a Lite Space (Sanity comparison page, October 2026). It holds on current prices: $75 against $1,150 a month, because 30 content types overflow the Starter Space (Deploi arithmetic). It is Sanity's marketing, so check your counts.

What do four typical teams pay on Contentful and on Sanity?

Sanity costs less for teams A and B, Contentful for team D, and team C and document-level team B need a quote on one side (Deploi arithmetic from Contentful pricing and Sanity pricing, October 2026).

Deploi arithmetic: Sanity is lower for teams A and B, Contentful for team D, and one side needs a quote for team C

D: 10 editors, 3 locales, 20 types, 8,000 entries, 2,000 assets, document-level$300$449 with the $299 add-on32,000 documents
Sanity rows assume field-level localization unless marked document-level, which adds a metadata document per entry. Contentful rows assume assets fit the record limit. Custom is an Enterprise quote.Sources: Contentful (Pricing); Contentful Help Center (Usage limits); Sanity (Plans that scale with you); Sanity Docs (Plans and payments, Extending the Growth plan with paid add-ons). As of 24 October 2026.

Team D costs less on Contentful because it keeps one record per entry; document-level translation makes four Sanity documents. Field-level, D pays $150.

Where does each platform's price jump to Enterprise?

Contentful jumps to an Enterprise quote at the 21st user or the 4th locale, and Sanity at the 51st seat or the 50,001st document (Contentful pricing; Sanity pricing, October 2026).

Deploi’s point of view

Where we disagree
The standard line that Contentful is expensive and Sanity is cheap holds only for some team shapes. Contentful Lite covers 20 users and 3 locales for a flat $300 a month as of October 2026, and by Deploi arithmetic a 10-editor team that translates 8,000 entries into 3 languages as separate Sanity documents pays more on Sanity. No Contentful page we read offers annual billing for Lite: it lists $300 a month and its billing help describes monthly invoices, so treat the "billed annually" claim as unsupported.
What we’ve seen
As of 24 October 2026, deploi.ca's Shopify sections run three Sanity Studio workspaces over two datasets in one project. Because cross-dataset references need an Enterprise plan, we link answers across those datasets with validated URL strings instead of references. That is how a team stays under a Sanity price cliff without buying the feature. Our view of Contentful rests on its documentation and public sources.
What this adds
The Sanity vs Contentful comparison prices the entry plans and finds the 20 seat crossover. This page moves both bills along three growth axes, users, locales and content volume, works four team shapes through both price lists, and lists the first unit that forces an Enterprise quote on each side.
What we'd tell you to do first
Count four numbers before you price either platform: people who edit rather than only read, locales and whether each publishes on its own day, content types, and entries plus assets per environment. Then convert entries into Sanity documents under the localization model you will actually use, drafts included, and compare that total with 25,000 and 50,000.

When this answer changes

  • Contentful changes the Lite price, the Lite Space price or the 20 user and 3 locale limits
  • Salesforce changes Contentful plans or prices after the 1 September 2026 completion it reports
  • Sanity changes the Growth seat price, the 25,000 document quota or the Increased quota add-on
  • Sanity resolves whether the Enterprise attribute limit is custom or 10,000
  • Contentful moves locale-based publishing below Enterprise, or Sanity moves Content Releases below Enterprise
  • Either vendor publishes an Enterprise price
