Data & Customer Migration

What happens to abandoned-cart records and their associated recovery-email history when migrating customer/cart data to Shopify?

Short answer

Abandoned-cart records don't migrate to Shopify, because Shopify documents no way to import one: its developer tools read abandoned checkouts but can't create them (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Shopify deletes its own after three months (Shopify Help Center). Recovery-email history stays in the email platform, and emails already queued keep linking to the old checkout until switched off.

Deploi’s call

Abandoned carts stay behind and their recovery-email history stays in the email platform, so do not migrate the carts. Migrate the customer relationship and the recovery flow, plan for the days recovery emails are off, and spend the effort on redirecting old checkout links instead. The cart records themselves are worth nothing after the product IDs change.

CustomizeRebuild recovery on the new store's events when

  • Recovery runs in the email platform you already pay for, as Deploi's abandoned checkout recovery record recommends, with the tracking checked end to end (October 2026).
  • Klaviyo stays, so the account keeps its history and each recovery flow is cloned onto the new store's metric (Klaviyo Help Center, October 2026).
  • The legacy flow's messages go to draft at cutover, so shoppers already in it skip them instead of reaching the old checkout (Klaviyo Help Center, October 2026).

DependsRecreate a legacy cart in Shopify only when

  • It's a business-to-business (B2B) quote in progress, which belongs in a draft order; Shopify turns abandoned checkouts off by default for B2B anyway (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Its products already exist in Shopify, so the line items can be rebuilt on their new IDs.
  • A named owner will send it personally and follow up on the reply.

Do abandoned-cart records migrate to Shopify?

Abandoned-cart records don't migrate to Shopify, because Shopify documents no way to bring them in. Its migration guide lists products, customers, historical orders, gift cards and store credits, blogs and pages, and no carts (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify's Admin application programming interface (API) reads abandoned checkouts and documents no way to create one (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Shopify treats its own as short-lived: "Abandoned checkouts that are older than three months are automatically deleted from the Shopify admin." The way to keep one is a draft order with the same details (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

An abandoned cart isn't portable anyway. It's session state bound to a cart token, a checkout address and product and variant IDs, all of which change at replatform. Even written into Shopify, its recovery link would point at a cart that doesn't exist. So customer records cross over in a platform switch and carts don't, which for once is the right outcome. Between two Shopify stores, draft orders and open carts follow different rules.

What is the real risk at cutover: the records or the recovery gap?

The real risk at cutover is the recovery gap, not the records. The old platform still has live abandoned carts whose recovery emails are mid-sequence or about to fire, so those emails either stop or keep sending shoppers to a checkout that no longer takes orders. Klaviyo shows the mechanism. Once the old store stops sending data, a flow on its metrics queues no new shoppers (Klaviyo Help Center, October 2026). Anyone already in the flow still gets each live message, and skips only messages set to draft (Klaviyo Help Center, October 2026).

What do email platforms keep of recovery-email history?

Email platforms keep recovery-email history in the account that sent it, and none of it moves into Shopify. What survives the switch depends on the platform:

  • Klaviyo lets you keep the same account through a platform switch, and the old store's metrics, Placed Order and Checkout Started among them, stay as history. Deleting those legacy metrics "will also delete all historical data associated with that metric" (Klaviyo Help Center, October 2026).
  • Omnisend doesn't use "any previous shop origin order events" after a platform change, so old orders drop out of segmentation. Orders imported into the new store come back into segmentation, because they sync to Omnisend through the new connection. Moving to a new Omnisend account, engagement data isn't exported and reports move only as PDF files you save first (Omnisend Help Center, October 2026).

So export the old store's recovery reporting before anyone tidies the account, and keep Klaviyo's legacy metrics until you have. Which Klaviyo flows to rebuild first, and how to clone them onto Shopify's events, is its own answer.

How do you size the recovery gap without a benchmark?

Size the recovery gap from your own last 90 days, not a benchmark. We won't give you a recovered-revenue percentage, because in our judgment an average quoted at a specific merchant is how a planning number becomes a promise.

  1. Pull the last 90 days of recovery-attributed revenue from the legacy platform or the email platform.
  2. Divide by 90 to get a daily figure.
  3. Multiply by the number of days your recovery flow will be dark.
  4. Present that number to whoever decides the cutover window.

That's your exposure, computed from your own data. It's usually either trivially small or large enough to change the launch plan, and either outcome is useful.

In what order should recovery move to Shopify at cutover?

Move recovery to Shopify in six steps, and build the new flow first. A legacy sequence that fires on day two into a dead checkout is a support ticket and a lost customer, so the order matters.

  1. Build and test the new recovery flow before cutover, in your email platform or in Shopify's abandoned checkout automation, which lives in the Shopify Messaging app (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Run one of the two, not both.
  2. Turn legacy recovery sends off at the cutover moment, not after. In Klaviyo, set the legacy flow's messages to draft, so shoppers already in it skip them.
  3. Redirect legacy checkout addresses to a sensible landing page. Not the homepage: a "we've moved" page with a route back to the relevant collection.
  4. Export the legacy abandoned-cart list with each email address and the products, before the platform goes away. Send one email, only to shoppers who agreed to marketing, with a genuine reason to return. Shopify's own abandoned checkout automation emails only marketing subscribers by default (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  5. Recreate anything genuinely valuable as a draft order. A large business-to-business (B2B) cart is usually a quote in progress, and B2B quotes as draft orders covers that move. Shopify turns abandoned checkouts off by default for B2B (Shopify Help Center).
  6. Tell marketing about any dark window, so nobody reads the dip as a launch failure.

When can you skip planning the abandoned-cart cutover?

You can skip most of this plan when your email platform isn't changing, when cutover lands in a quiet window, or when the legacy carts are mostly bots.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

What we’ve seen
The expensive failure here is never the lost cart data. It is legacy recovery emails still firing after cutover, sending your most purchase-ready customers to a dead link, with nobody noticing because the sends succeeded.
Where we disagree
Migration checklists list abandoned carts as a data object to be carried across. They are session state with a three-month lifespan on Shopify's own platform, and treating them as durable records produces work that delivers nothing.
What we refuse to quote
a recovery-rate benchmark for your store. We have given the method to compute your own number from your own last 90 days, because an industry average applied to a specific merchant is a guess wearing a statistic.
What this page adds
The parent answer moves customer metadata into Shopify. This page shows the part that doesn't move: Shopify documents no import for abandoned checkouts and deletes its own after three months, a draft order is Shopify's way to keep one, which also suits a B2B cart that is really a quote in progress, and recovery-email history stays with the email platform that sent it.

Decision records behind this answer

When this answer changes

  • Shopify adds a documented way to import or create abandoned checkouts.
  • Shopify changes the three-month deletion of abandoned checkouts from the admin.
  • Shopify removes the legacy abandoned checkout email, leaving only the automation in the Shopify Messaging app.
  • Klaviyo lets a flow's trigger metric change in place, or stops keeping legacy metrics after a platform switch.
  • Omnisend starts using a previous shop's order events after a platform change.
