What's the real difference in bot/fraud protection tooling between Advanced and Plus at meaningful order volume?
Short answer
Checkout bot protection is Shopify's only Plus-only bot or fraud screen: "The bot protection feature is available only for merchants on a Shopify Plus plan" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Fraud recommendations run "on the Grow plan or higher, or if you use Shopify Payments" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so Advanced and Plus screen orders alike at any volume.

Deploi’s call
The bot and fraud-screening difference between Shopify Advanced and Plus is one feature: checkout bot protection. It is event-scoped, and it is worth exactly as much as your drop calendar says it is. Fraud screening is the same on both plans, and framing the upgrade as a security upgrade is not accurate.
BuyMove to Plus for bot protection when
- Timed, limited-inventory drops on the Online Store channel are your sales model, and checkout bots are taking the stock.
- Each drop fits one bot protection event: up to 500 chosen products or the whole store, for up to 60 minutes, one event at a time (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Another Plus-only drop tool is on the same roadmap, such as Launchpad, Plus's event scheduler (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so several tools share one business case.
CustomizeStay on Advanced while
- The complaint is chargebacks or card testing: fraud analysis, third-party fraud apps and Shopify Protect work the same on Advanced (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- The complaint is scraping or credential stuffing: Shopify already routes every online store through Cloudflare's web application firewall (WAF), on every plan (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Your releases are steady replenishment, with no drops.
- Nobody has yet read the fraud recommendations already in your admin.

Are bot protection and fraud protection the same problem on Shopify?
No: Shopify treats bot protection and fraud screening as separate jobs, and only bot protection is gated to Shopify Plus. Bots are an inventory-fairness problem at the moment of a drop. Fraud is a chargeback-loss problem in the days after an order. Shopify says Plus bot protection "isn't meant to combat forms of fraud that are related to bot activity" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So upgrading the plan leaves a fraud complaint unfixed; the wider Advanced vs. Plus decision turns on fees and checkout.

What does Shopify Plus bot protection actually do?
Shopify Plus bot protection is a fairness control for flash sales: it challenges checkout bots during one scheduled event of up to 60 minutes. Shopify says it "acts as a fairness control by blocking known bots from your checkout, and slowing down bot activity" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The limits on that page decide whether it fits your store:
- "To activate bot protection for your online store, contact Shopify Plus Support." Plus's priority support doubles as the activation route.
- Each event uses a Google reCAPTCHA or an hCaptcha challenge. hCaptcha adds image or box-drawing challenges, and you can add your own skill-testing questions.
- "Bot protection can be applied to up to 500 individual products, or to all the products in your store."
- "The maximum duration for a bot protection event is 60 minutes," and only one event can be scheduled at a time.
- Bot protection works only on the Online Store sales channel.
- The setting that stops bots auto-completing checkout "is active by default", and you can turn it off.
So Plus bot protection is event-scoped tooling built for a drop. Sustained scraping or account-takeover attempts on a Tuesday afternoon need a different tool, and upgrading to Plus will not supply it.
Does order volume change which plan protects you better?
No: order volume gates none of Shopify's fraud tooling, so Shopify Advanced and Plus screen a busy month the same way. A store doing 40,000 orders a month on Advanced with Shopify Payments gets the same fraud indicators, fraud recommendations and pre-order blocking as a Plus store at that volume. Shopify's fraud analysis page gates its tools by plan and payment provider, never by order count: Shopify Payments "can block some high-risk checkout attempts before an order is created" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
What changes the answer is whether you run constrained-inventory releases. A brand doing $2M a month in steady replenishment has no bot problem worth a plan fee. A brand doing $500,000 a month across four sneaker drops has one that is arguably existential, and the plan fee is not the expensive part of solving it. Bot protection is a challenge, not a queue, so Deploi's drop-day decision record scores a waiting-room app BUY for monthly limited-inventory drops with resale demand. Drop brands also weigh Launchpad scheduling, high-volume checkout and per-customer purchase limits. Deploi's drop-limit record builds those limits as a custom validation function, and only Plus stores can install one.
When is upgrading for bot or fraud tooling the wrong move?
Upgrading to Shopify Plus for bot or fraud tooling is the wrong move when the problem is chargebacks, scraping or a calendar with no drops.
Platform features only, not fraud-liability or chargeback advice.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- What we’ve seen
- "We have a bot problem" is, on inspection, three different problems: resellers at a drop, scrapers on product pages, and card testing at checkout. Only the first one is the thing Plus sells. The other two are answered outside the plan upgrade, and stay unanswered if the upgrade is treated as the fix.
- Where we disagree
- Bot protection is marketed as a headline Plus capability, and the pricing page gives it one row whose tooltip says only that it "Protects your store from bots during flash sales." The published limits change what the row means: a 60-minute maximum event, one event at a time, the Online Store channel only, and activation through Plus Support. Buyers should see those limits before they see the price.
- What this page adds
- that fraud analysis, fraud recommendations and Shopify Protect are not Plus-gated at all, that Shopify Protect covers US stores only, and the published operating limits of the one screening feature that is, including Shopify's own line that it is not meant for bot-related fraud.

- Shopify opens checkout bot protection to Advanced, or changes its 60-minute, 500-product or one-event limits.
- Shopify makes bot protection self-serve in the admin instead of activated through Plus Support.
- Shopify adds a Plus-only fraud-screening tool, or changes the plan gates on fraud analysis and fraud recommendations.
- Shopify Protect expands beyond US stores, or changes its eligibility rules.
- Your brand starts running timed, limited-inventory drops.
Related questions
This follows from At $1M+/month in online sales, is staying on Advanced actually leaving money on the table by not upgrading to Plus?
- If we're currently on Advanced and considering Plus mainly for Launchpad flash-sale scheduling, is that a strong enough reason on its own?
Launchpad alone does not justify moving from Advanced to Shopify Plus.
- Is 'high-volume checkout' (10K+ checkouts/minute) ever relevant to a brand still deciding between Advanced and Plus, or is that purely an enterprise-scale concern?
Shopify Plus's high-volume checkout is a drop concern, not an enterprise concern.
- Does Advanced get the same 99.99% uptime positioning and priority support as Plus, or is that support-tier difference real?
Shopify Advanced shares the 99.99% peak-event uptime average Shopify markets for Plus but not Plus's priority support, so support is the real difference.
