Who owns Avalara, and does that ownership affect its long-term support for Shopify integrations?

Short answer

Vista Equity Partners owns Avalara, which it took private on 19 October 2022 at $93.50 a share (Vista's closing release, October 2026). Avalara's parent filed a confidential draft to go public in July 2025 (Avalara newsroom, October 2026). Avalara's Shopify integration kept shipping, so ownership hasn't slowed it: Shopify logged a sync change in December 2025 (Shopify Changelog, October 2026).

Deploi’s call

Ownership is the least predictive thing you can look at for Avalara's Shopify support. Integration changelog cadence and first-party documentation are the signals worth watching, and both currently point at an actively maintained Shopify integration.

BuySign or renew with Avalara when

  • The job is multi-entity compliance tied to an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system across 20 or more registrations, where Deploi's TaxJar vs. Avalara record gives Avalara the BUY (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
  • The contract caps renewal increases, because Avalara's parent has filed to go public again (Avalara, October 2026).
  • You can export registrations, filing history and exemption certificates at exit.

WaitHold a multi-year commitment when

  • Avalara won't put a renewal cap in writing.
  • Your registration count may cross the record's line of 20 registrations within a year, which changes the verdict (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
  • You want the option to re-shop at the next renewal while the public offering is pending.

Who owns Avalara today, and what has changed since 2022?

Vista Equity Partners owns Avalara today, and two things have moved since the 2022 buyout: a pending return to public markets and a new chief executive.

Vista has owned Avalara since October 2022; a July 2025 draft filing and a May 2026 change of chief executive followed

The 2025 filing is a draft, not a listing. Avalara said the share count and price range "have not yet been determined", and the offering "remains subject to the completion of the SEC review process, as well as market and other conditions" (Avalara, October 2026). Avalara's team still competed at a Vista Equity Partners hackathon in September 2026 (Avalara, October 2026), a sign that Vista remains the owner while the filing waits.

Has Vista's ownership changed Avalara's Shopify integration?

Vista's ownership has coincided with a newer Shopify app, not a retreat from Shopify. Avalara launched its Avalara Tax Compliance app on the Shopify App Store on 30 April 2024 (Avalara, October 2026). On 1 May 2025 Shopify retired the legacy AvaTax app, the older Avalara connector, for merchants collecting United States sales tax, and moved those still on it to Shopify Tax. Its notice added that "Avalara Tax Compliance is still available" (Shopify Changelog, October 2026).

Shopify then logged two changes to the integration. Test orders stopped syncing to Avalara in October 2025 (Shopify Changelog, October 2026). From 1 October 2025, orders placed or changed through third-party apps, or imported by one, "are automatically imported to Avalara Tax Compliance and will be recalculated" (Shopify Changelog, October 2026). Avalara kept extending the app in 2026. Its July product update added routing of each Shopify transaction to an Avalara company by the customer's destination country (Avalara, October 2026). In September, Avalara Tax Compliance began recording a supplier's Shopify Collective drop-ship orders as tax-free (Avalara, October 2026). So the integration merchants depend on today is an app from April 2024, and the 2025 disruption came from a retired connector, not from an owner.

Will private equity ownership push Avalara away from smaller accounts?

Avalara's own 2026 moves point toward smaller accounts, not away from them: its Avalara Select plan publishes prices for businesses with up to $50 million in annual revenue (Avalara, October 2026). Avalara introduced the plan in July 2026 (Avalara, October 2026). It costs $69 to $79 per state a month, or $699 to $799 a year (Avalara, October 2026), under one 200,000-transaction cap on total United States volume (Avalara, October 2026). The usual theory says private equity trims long-tail customers; a published small-business price list is the opposite move.

Which signals predict Avalara's Shopify support better than ownership?

Four signals predict Avalara's Shopify support better than its owner, and you can check each one yourself.

  1. Changelog cadence. Shopify logged Avalara integration changes in October and December 2025 (Shopify Changelog, October 2026). Avalara's own product updates still add Shopify features, most recently in September 2026 (Avalara, October 2026). A year with neither would be the warning.
  2. Shopify's own documentation. Shopify's Tax apps page lists Avalara Tax Compliance and Vertex (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A delisting there would be the real signal.
  3. The contract. "Avalara is a paid tax solution that requires a direct contract between you and Avalara", and Shopify adds "no additional cost" for the integration (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So price protection lives in Avalara's contract, not Shopify's.
  4. Your exit cost. Registrations, filing history and exemption certificates are the assets. Deploi's Avalara vs. Shopify Tax record says to export filing history early, because "the platform's records are your audit trail" (Deploi decision record, October 2026).

When should Avalara's ownership change your decision?

Avalara's ownership should change your decision only at contract time. Avalara's parent filed a confidential draft to go public in July 2025 (Avalara, October 2026). A multi-year deal signed while that offering is pending needs a renewal cap in writing, and a tax function run on one vendor needs records you can export.

This page describes ownership facts and integration activity with their dates, not a forecast of any vendor's future or tax advice.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
The standard take treats private-equity ownership as a reason to avoid a vendor. We think it is a reason to write a better contract. The dated evidence on this page points at continued investment in the Shopify surface specifically, and a general theory should lose to dated evidence about the thing you are actually buying.
What we hear behind the question (our judgment, not a measurement)
Merchants raise the PE question as a proxy for a different worry, usually about price increases at renewal. That worry is legitimate and has a direct remedy: negotiate the uplift cap at signature. The ownership conversation does not have a remedy, which is why it goes in circles.
What we refuse to predict
whether Avalara completes an IPO, what it would mean for pricing, or how any vendor will behave after a corporate event. We do not know, and neither does anyone publishing a confident answer.
What this page adds
The parent asks whether Avalara still fits a mid-market Shopify merchant. This page answers who owns Avalara and whether that has changed its Shopify support, with dated evidence: the April 2024 app, Shopify's May 2025 retirement of the legacy AvaTax app, two integration changes in late 2025, Avalara's 2026 updates to the app and the May 2026 change of chief executive.

When this answer changes

  • Avalara's parent files its registration statement publicly, prices an offering or withdraws it.
  • Shopify drops Avalara Tax Compliance from its Tax apps page, or a year passes with no Avalara change in Shopify's changelog or Avalara's product updates.
  • Avalara changes Avalara Select's per-state prices, revenue limit or transaction cap.
  • Vista sells Avalara or announces a merger.
  • Deploi updates its tax decision records' view of Avalara's small-account strategy.
