Does Gemini favor content that's already indexed in Google's main index, meaning a brand-new page won't show up in Gemini answers as fast as in ChatGPT's?
Gemini depends on Google Search results, so a brand-new page reaches Gemini answers only after Google indexes it. Grounding with Google Search has the model generate and execute search queries, then answer from those results (per Google's Gemini documentation, September 2026). ChatGPT has no such dependency, because OAI-SearchBot crawls and indexes independently of Google (per OpenAI, September 2026).
The mechanism
Grounding with Google Search works in a defined sequence: the model analyzes the prompt, decides whether a search helps, generates one or more queries, executes them, and synthesizes an answer from the results with inline citations (per Google's Gemini API documentation, September 2026). Every step after the first runs through Google Search. A page Google has not indexed cannot be returned, so it cannot ground anything.
The implications for launch timing
- A new collection or guide is visible to Gemini and AI Mode on Google's indexing timeline, which you influence through sitemaps, internal links and Search Console, the same levers as always.
- The same page is visible to ChatGPT on OpenAI's own crawl timeline. OpenAI documents that robots.txt changes take roughly 24 hours to register (per OpenAI, September 2026), which gives a sense of the refresh interval but is not a publish-to-citation figure.
- Neither vendor publishes a time-to-citation. Anyone quoting one has measured a sample, not read a specification.
Edge cases
- Gemini in the consumer app versus the API. The documented behavior above is the API's grounding tool. Consumer Gemini answers involve additional systems Google does not document, so treat the mechanism as directional for the app.
- A page that ranks nowhere. Indexing is necessary, not sufficient. Query fan-out issues multiple related searches (per Google Search Central, September 2026); an indexed page that surfaces for none of them grounds nothing.
- Products, not pages. On Shopify, product discovery in Google AI Mode and Gemini also runs through agentic storefronts, where eligible products are automatically discoverable via Shopify Catalog (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026). That path does not wait on your blog's indexing.
The Deploi point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.
- Our take: The Google dependency is a reason to keep classic indexing hygiene funded, not a reason to build a Gemini-specific program. Sitemaps, internal linking and server-rendered content do the work.
- What we’ve seen: New content that stalls usually stalls on internal linking, not on crawl budget. A guide published with no link from any collection or navigation is a page Google finds late and ranks never.
- Where we disagree: Some AI-visibility tools price "instant AI indexing" as a feature. No vendor documents a mechanism by which a third party accelerates Gemini grounding, and we decline to quote a number we cannot source.
- What this page adds: the documented grounding sequence, and the fact that Shopify's agentic product path bypasses the page-indexing dependency entirely.
