Does our FAQ content specifically help AI engines cite us, more than regular product-page copy does?

FAQ content earns citations more readily than product-page copy for question-shaped prompts, because a question heading plus a short direct answer is already the retrieval unit an engine needs. Product copy wins on attribute questions: sizing, materials, compatibility. Google confirms no special FAQ markup is required, and FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Search on May 7, 2026 (per Google Search Central, September 2026).

The mechanism: shape matching, not content type

An engine answering "is [product] safe for sensitive skin" is looking for a passage that answers that question without needing the rest of the page. A well-built FAQ block supplies exactly that: the question as a heading, the answer immediately under it, no dependency on a preceding paragraph. Marketing product copy usually fails on the second condition: the claim depends on the sentence before it, and lifting it out breaks it.

What this implies for where you put the effort

Question-shaped prompts and attribute prompts split cleanly:

  • Prompts your FAQ answers better: compatibility, care and usage, returns and warranty, "is this right for me", "what's the difference between X and Y".
  • Prompts your product page answers better: price, availability, variant options, dimensions, materials. Shopify Catalog already syndicates title, description, options, images, price and availability to AI channels (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026), so those attributes travel whether or not you write prose about them.

The edge case worth knowing. FAQ schema is no longer a visibility lever in Google. The rich result was retired on May 7, 2026, and the documentation was withdrawn in June (per Google Search Central, September 2026). Markup still helps engines parse a page; it no longer buys you a SERP feature. Anyone selling FAQ schema as a Google visibility product in 2026 is selling a dead feature.

Where FAQ content actively backfires: thin Q&A generated to hit a page count. Google's spam policies name pages generated for the primary purpose of manipulating rankings, whatever the method (per Google Search Central, September 2026). Twelve real questions beat two hundred synthetic ones.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: FAQ content is worth writing for the retrieval shape, not for the schema. Write the questions customer support actually receives; skip the ones invented to fill a template.
  • What we’ve seen: Across 18 metafield-driven PDP builds, the FAQ block that gets cited is the one bound to metafields and owned by merchandising. FAQ copy pasted into a rich-text field goes stale within two seasons and nobody notices, because nothing flags it.
  • What this page adds: which prompt types favor FAQ content over product copy, and that the FAQ rich result is gone as of May 7, 2026.
