Does Gemini favor content that's already indexed in Google's main index, meaning a brand-new page won't show up in Gemini answers as fast as in ChatGPT's?
Short answer
Yes: Gemini's search-grounded answers can cite a brand-new page only after Google indexes it, because grounding runs through Google Search (Google AI for Developers, October 2026). Google says crawling takes "anywhere from a few days to a few weeks" (Google Search Central, October 2026). OpenAI publishes no crawl timeline for ChatGPT, so no source shows ChatGPT is faster.

Deploi’s call
Gemini waits on Google's index, so treat that dependency as a reason to keep classic indexing hygiene funded, not a reason to build a Gemini-specific program. Sitemaps, internal linking and server-rendered content do the work.
CustomizeFund indexing hygiene for launches when
- A new guide or collection page has to reach Gemini and AI Mode. Submit Shopify's automatic sitemap.xml in Google Search Console, which Shopify says "helps Google find and index pages" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Launch pages have no links from collections or navigation. Google lists internal links among the SEO (search engine optimization) basics for its AI features (Google Search Central, October 2026).
- Robots rules or hosting block crawlers, or robots.txt disallows Google-Extended, which keeps pages out of Gemini app grounding even after Google indexes them (Google's common crawlers, October 2026). Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record puts that technical hygiene first (October 2026).
WaitBuild nothing Gemini-specific while
- A vendor sells "instant AI indexing". Google says repeat crawl requests for one URL "won't get it crawled any faster" (Google Search Central, October 2026).
- The launch is a product rather than a page. Products reach AI Mode and Gemini through Google Merchant Center, so the feed sets the pace (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Does Gemini need a page in Google's index before it can cite it?
Gemini needs a page in Google's index before a search-grounded answer can cite it, because grounding runs through Google Search. Google's Gemini documentation sets out the sequence. The model first decides whether a Google Search can improve the answer. If so, it "automatically generates one or multiple search queries and executes them", then answers from the results with inline citations (Google AI for Developers, October 2026).
The Gemini app works the same way for part of its answers: "some Gemini responses are grounded on Search results" (Gemini Apps Help, October 2026). Google states the rule outright for AI Mode and AI Overviews. To appear as a supporting link, a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google Search Central, October 2026). So until Google indexes a page, Gemini's Search grounding cannot cite it. That is the Google half of how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini each reach the same product page.
How long does Google take to crawl and index a new page?
Google takes "anywhere from a few days to a few weeks" to crawl a new or changed page, and even then indexing is not guaranteed (Google Search Central, October 2026). Google says requesting a crawl "does not guarantee that inclusion in search results will happen instantly or even at all". So a launch page reaches Gemini on Google's timeline, which a Shopify store can influence with three levers:
- Sitemap. "All Shopify stores automatically generate a sitemap.xml file" that links products, pages, collections and blog posts. Submitting it to Google Search Console "helps Google find and index pages" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- URL Inspection. Search Console's URL Inspection tool requests a crawl for a few URLs, within a quota. Asking again for the same URL "won't get it crawled any faster" (Google Search Central, October 2026).
- Internal links. Google lists making content "easily findable through internal links" among the basics for its AI features (Google Search Central, October 2026).
None of the three levers is specific to Gemini, which means the work is ordinary indexing hygiene.
Does a new page reach ChatGPT faster than Gemini?
No published source shows a new page reaching ChatGPT faster than Gemini, because OpenAI publishes no crawl timeline for ChatGPT. OpenAI's crawler page says OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features". Its only timing figure is about 24 hours for a robots.txt change to take effect (OpenAI Developers, October 2026).
ChatGPT does not rely on its own index alone. OpenAI says "ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers". Under "Information shared with search providers", it points to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies for "how search providers may process queries", but it does not say what either company supplies (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026). ChatGPT-User can visit a page live when a user asks, but OpenAI says it "is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search" (OpenAI Developers, October 2026).
So the comparison is Google's published range of days to weeks against no ChatGPT figure at all. In our reading, OpenAI's link to Microsoft's privacy statement places Microsoft's search among ChatGPT's partners. So submitting the same Shopify sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools is a cheap hedge.
Do new products wait on Google's index the way new pages do?
New products do not wait on page indexing, because Shopify sends product data to AI channels through feeds. "Product discovery for Google AI Mode and Gemini is powered by Google Merchant Center", which Shopify's Google & YouTube sales channel fills from your product records (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify says its Google AI Mode and Gemini channel is still "rolling out to eligible stores", and that channel needs a store based in the United States that sells to US customers.
On ChatGPT, OpenAI says Shopify product data "is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog" (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026). So a new product reaches AI shopping results on the feed's schedule, while a new guide or collection page waits on crawling. Who should own the product feed and the page copy has its own answer.
When is a Gemini-specific launch plan the wrong move?
A Gemini-specific launch plan is the wrong move whenever the fix sits in Google's index or your site settings rather than in Gemini, because Google's index has no separate lane for Gemini. Four situations show it.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- Some AI-visibility tools price "instant AI indexing" as a feature. No vendor documents a mechanism by which a third party accelerates Gemini grounding, and we decline to quote a number we cannot source.
- What we check first
- internal links to the new page. In our judgment, new content that stalls usually stalls on internal linking, not on crawl budget: a guide published with no link from any collection or navigation is a page Google finds late.
- What this page adds
- Google's published index rule and crawl timeline for a new page, the two site settings that can still keep an indexed page out, what OpenAI does and does not publish about ChatGPT's index, and that Shopify products reach AI Mode and Gemini through Google Merchant Center rather than page indexing.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Google publishes a separate indexing path or timeline for Gemini or AI Mode.
- OpenAI names its search providers or publishes how fast OAI-SearchBot finds new pages.
- Shopify finishes rolling out Google AI Mode and Gemini to every eligible store, or drops the US-based store rule.
- Google changes the indexed and snippet-eligible requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Google changes its few-days-to-few-weeks guidance on crawling a new URL.
- Google changes what Search Console's generative AI control or the Google-Extended token covers.
Related questions
- Does Google's AI Overviews rely more on our existing organic-ranking signals than ChatGPT does, meaning our regular SEO work matters more for one engine than the other?
Google's AI Overviews lean directly on Google's ranking signals; ChatGPT leans on organic ranking only in part.
- Should we treat our Shopify product feed (for AI shopping agents) as a completely separate content project from our product page copy (for AI answer citations), or should one team own both?
The Shopify product feed is not a separate content project: it belongs to the team that owns the product page copy, because both render from one product record.
