How do I prioritize which Conversions API to implement first (Meta, Google, or TikTok) if I can only build one this quarter?
Meta and TikTok are the wrong builds: both ship server-side event delivery free inside their Shopify channel apps at the Enhanced or Maximum data-sharing level (per Shopify Help Center and TikTok for Business, September 2026). Spend the quarter on Google, where the Shopify channel app advertises no server-side conversion path and enhanced conversions needs hashed first-party data you supply.
The sequencing rule, and why it inverts the usual advice
The usual advice is to build for your biggest channel first. On Shopify that is wrong, because your two biggest channels are the two that already have a free server-side path in the platform.
| Channel | Native server-side path on Shopify | Build effort this quarter |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Yes. "The Conversions API sends the purchase event between Shopify and Facebook servers" at Enhanced and Maximum data-sharing levels, at no extra cost (per Shopify Help Center, Sep 2026) | A settings change, then verification |
| TikTok | Yes. The Shopify integration carries "TikTok Pixel and Events API" as "a browser and server-side connection" (per TikTok for Business, Sep 2026) | A settings change, then verification |
| Not advertised. The Google & YouTube app's listing describes product sync, Performance Max and Analytics, with no server-side conversion path (verified on apps.shopify.com, Sep 2026). Enhanced conversions requires normalized, hex SHA256 hashed first-party data (per Google, Sep 2026) | A real build |
So the honest order for a one-quarter budget is: enable, enable, build.
Week by week, for the quarter that actually works
- Week 1. Enable and verify the free paths. Set Meta data sharing to Enhanced or Maximum. Set the TikTok channel's data-sharing level. Then verify in each platform's event manager, because enabling a setting and confirming events arrive are different facts.
- Week 2. Fix deduplication before you add anything. Confirm
event_idis present and matching on both browser and server events. Meta deduplicates only within 48 hours of the first event with a givenevent_id; TikTok requires the same parameter and deduplicates after 5 minutes and within 48 hours (per Meta and TikTok, September 2026). Duplicate purchases inflate every number you will use to justify the next step. - Week 3. Baseline the gap on all three channels. Platform-reported conversions against Shopify orders, same window, fixed attribution settings. This is the document the rest of the quarter is judged against.
- Weeks 4 to 10. Build Google. Enhanced conversions for web, with hashed first-party data collected at checkout, normalized and hashed to Google's stated requirements.
- Weeks 11 to 13. Re-measure and publish. Report the narrowed gap per channel. Do not report revenue.
If your spend does not look like that
- Google is under 15% of paid spend. Skip the build. Spend the quarter on event schema and identity instead: one purchase event, one value definition, one stable identifier across the funnel. It improves match quality on every destination at once.
- You run Meta almost exclusively. Enable native, verify, and spend the quarter on creative and measurement design. There is no build to do.
- You are heavily on channels with no native Shopify path, such as Pinterest, Snapchat or Reddit, for a material share of spend. Build a single server-side collection point rather than one integration per platform, so the fourth destination is configuration rather than another project.
When NOT to build any of them this quarter
- When deduplication is unverified. The first thing a new conversions API does to a broken pixel setup is double the purchase count.
- When consent is not wired. A consent-blind server pipeline is a compliance exposure that outlives the quarter.
- When the checkout is changing. Instrument the destination checkout, not the one being replaced.
The Deploi point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.
- Our take: Enable the free Meta and TikTok paths in week one, verify them in week two, and spend the build budget on Google. The sequencing rule we hold to is that no conversions API gets built until deduplication is verified on the pixel that already exists, because the single most common outcome of an unverified first integration is inflated conversions that nobody catches until a quarterly review.
- What we’ve seen: Across seven analytics and dataLayer instrumentation engagements, a meaningful share of what gets scoped as a server-side build is a data-sharing setting that was never switched on. We check the admin before we quote, and we say so in the proposal.
- Times we’ve shipped this: 7 builds delivered.
- Where we disagree: The standard sequencing advice is biggest-spend-first, which on Shopify sends most merchants to build the one integration the platform already gives them. Build where the platform gives you nothing. On Shopify today, that is Google.
- What this page adds: that Shopify's channel apps already carry server-side delivery for two of the three platforms, which makes Google the only one of the three that is genuinely a build, and that deduplication verification has to precede any of it.
