How does a legacy platform's affiliate-marketing plugin map onto Shopify's affiliate app options, and is native affiliate tracking even comparable?

Shopify Collabs, the native affiliate option, is creator-first rather than a full affiliate platform: free to install, 2.9% commission processing fee on automatic payouts. Refersion at $39 to $199 per month and UpPromote at $29.99 to $199.99 per month carry the tracking depth a legacy plugin had (all verified September 2026).

What "native" actually means here

Shopify Collabs exists, it is Shopify's own app, and it is available on all Shopify plans except Starter and Retail (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026). It handles creator applications, personalized offers, gifting, affiliate links, discount-code attribution and automated commission payouts, with a 2.9% processing fee on automatic payments (per its App Store listing, September 2026).

That is a creator program. A legacy affiliate plugin, in most mid-market stacks, was a partner network: tiered commissions, coupon and content partner segmentation, cookie windows you set, and a partner-facing reporting login your affiliate manager lived in. Collabs is not that, and its own reviews say so. The listing sits at 4.1 stars across 426 reviews, with 21% one-star, and the recurring feature requests in those reviews are tiered commission structures and product-level control (verified on the listing and its reviews page, September 2026). That review distribution is unusual for a first-party Shopify app and it is the most honest signal on the page.

Is native tracking comparable? Not for a mature program

The honest answer is no, and Shopify does not claim otherwise. If your legacy plugin ran a partner program with tiered payouts, multiple attribution windows, and a partner portal your affiliates logged into weekly, Collabs is a downgrade dressed as a consolidation. If your "affiliate program" was in practice thirty creators with discount codes, Collabs is the cheaper, tighter answer and it removes a vendor.

Both Refersion and UpPromote charge a percentage of affiliate-generated sales on top of the monthly fee, which is the economic shape merchants coming off a flat-fee legacy plugin tend to miss. At $500,000 of annual affiliate revenue, Refersion Growth's 2% is $10,000 a year on top of $1,908, and that is the number to put in the migration business case rather than the plan price.

The verdict, with the profile

Map to UpPromote if you are a $20M to $100M brand with an existing partner roster, a named affiliate owner, and commission rules more complex than one flat rate. It carries the deepest tier ladder at the lowest entry point, and its 3,818-review base means the edge cases have been hit by someone else first.

Map to Refersion if your program runs through agencies or networks and you need the partner-facing reporting and payout rails to look professional to people who are not your employees.

Map to Collabs if the program is creator-led and under about fifty partners, and take the removed vendor as the win.

One thing that does not map at all

Affiliate cookies and historical attribution do not transfer. Whatever the legacy plugin believed about which partner earned which sale in 2025 stays there. Export the commission ledger as a flat file for your finance team before cancellation, agree the cutover date with every partner in writing, and expect a month of disputed attribution on both sides of the line.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: Affiliate is the one mapping in a replatform where the honest answer is often "your program was never as sophisticated as the plugin that ran it." Audit the last twelve months of actual payouts before shopping. Most mid-market programs are a flat rate and a spreadsheet.
  • What we’ve seen: The percentage-of-affiliate-sales fee is what turns a clean vendor swap into a renegotiation six months later, because it scales with the program's success instead of its cost.
  • Where we disagree: The category treats Collabs as the default because it is first-party. A 4.1 rating with 21% one-star reviews is the market saying something, and it deserves more weight than the Shopify logo on the listing.
  • What this page adds: that affiliate is the one layer where the native option is genuinely narrower than what the legacy plugin did, and where attribution history is simply lost.
