How does Wix Stores' native subscription/membership feature migrate to Shopify, given Shopify's subscriptions are app-based, not native by default?

Wix subscribers get re-enrolled on Shopify rather than migrated. Shopify's own Wix migration guide covers products, customers and order history and never mentions subscriptions, memberships or Pricing Plans (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026), and Wix requires a site owner to cancel all active recurring plans before switching payment providers even within Wix (per Wix's Help Center, September 2026).

Mechanism: there is no contract object to export

Wix runs recurring billing across several products: Wix Stores subscriptions, Pricing Plans, Wix Video and Recurring Invoices (per Wix's Help Center, September 2026). What none of them expose is a contract-level export with the fields a Shopify import needs: a billing anchor, a cadence, a line price and a payment method reference. Shopify's migration path from Wix is CSV-based and covers products, customers and order history, with reviews explicitly called out as something "you can't export or migrate" (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026). Subscriptions are not on the list in either direction.

The tell that settles it

Wix's own documentation says that switching payment provider requires cancelling "all active recurring plans" first (per Wix's Help Center, September 2026). If a recurring mandate cannot survive a provider change inside Wix, it certainly does not survive leaving Wix. The mandate belongs to the provider relationship the plan was created under.

What re-enrollment actually looks like

  1. Build the offer on Shopify first. Shopify's first-party Subscriptions app creates auto-billed subscriptions renewing weekly, monthly or yearly, with skip, pause and cancel in a customer portal, and supports dollar, percentage, buy-X-get-Y and fixed-amount discounts (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026). Supported gateways include Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen and Stripe. Note two documented limits before you design around it: "Bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app" and "Subscriptions can't be used with draft orders" (per Shopify, September 2026).
  2. Import the customers. Use the Wix customer export and Shopify's CSV import. Tag the subscriber cohort so you can measure re-enrollment separately from general traffic.
  3. Run the storefront cutover. Wix keeps billing until you tell it to stop.
  4. Invite subscribers to re-enroll, with a reason to. A migration is an interruption you are asking the customer to absorb; a locked price, a bonus cycle or a skip-anytime guarantee is what converts the ask.
  5. Cancel the Wix plans on a published date, after the re-enrollment window closes, not before. Double-billing a customer across two platforms is the one outcome worse than losing them.

Set the expectation honestly. This is a win-back campaign, not a data migration, and it should be budgeted and measured as one: a mailing list, an offer, a conversion rate and a decay curve. Any agency that quotes a Wix subscription migration as a data task has not read Wix's export surface.

Where the effort actually goes. Almost none of it is in the import. It is in the product page: building a purchase-option selector on the new theme that makes re-enrolling a two-click action rather than a form.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: Treat a Wix subscription move as a re-enrollment campaign with a hard deadline and an offer attached. Framing it as a migration sets an expectation of zero loss that the platform cannot deliver.
  • What we’ve seen: The re-enrollment conversion rate tracks the friction of the subscribe control on the product page far more than the wording of the email. The selector is the campaign.
  • Times we’ve shipped this: 5 builds delivered.
  • What it takes: roughly 46 hours scoped for the PDP purchase-option layer (directional Deploi estimate from a small sample of engagements, not a measured average).
  • Where we disagree: Migration vendors list Wix among supported sources. They are supported for products, customers and orders. Presenting that as coverage of a subscription program is the kind of gap that only surfaces after the contract is signed.
  • What this page adds: that the Wix branch has no contract export at all, so none of the parent's sequencing advice applies, and the single Wix documentation line (cancel all recurring plans to switch provider) that proves it.
