How much organic traffic and sales are Shopify merchants actually seeing from Perplexity right now, versus ChatGPT or Gemini?

No platform publishes absolute traffic or sales volumes from Perplexity, ChatGPT or Gemini for Shopify merchants. Shopify publishes ratios only: AI-referred sessions up more than 8x year over year in Q1 2026 (Shopify, May 2026). One independent Shopify measurement found AI referrals at 0.10% of sessions and 0.10% of revenue (Ethercycle, August 2026).

What is published, stated exactly

There are three bodies of evidence and they answer three different questions. Confusing them is how the inflated numbers in this category get made.

Shopify, on Shopify merchants, ratios only. "Referral sessions from AI chatbots grew more than 8x year-over-year on Shopify storefronts as of Q1 2026" and "AI-referred orders on Shopify grew nearly 13x year-over-year in Q1 2026" (per Shopify enterprise blog, May 2026). In Q2, "AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores had tripled year-over-year" (per Shopify Q2 2026 earnings coverage, August 2026). In neither disclosure is there a denominator. Shopify does, however, publish one bounding statement worth more than either multiple: "Organic still refers more sessions to Shopify merchants than all tracked AI platforms combined" (per Shopify, May 2026).

Statcounter, across the web, relative shares. For March 2026, AI chatbot referrals to websites split ChatGPT 78.16%, Google Gemini 8.65%, Perplexity 7.07%, Microsoft Copilot 3.19%, Claude 2.91%, DeepSeek 0.02%, measured from "over 3 billion page views per month to over 1 million websites" (per Statcounter, released 2 April 2026). That is all websites, not stores, and it is share of AI referrals, not share of traffic.

One independent Shopify-specific measurement, absolute. Ten established United States Shopify stores, 94 million sessions and $274 million in revenue over 24 months to June 2026, attributed with "Shopify's last non-direct click, straight from each store's analytics." Result: AI referrals at 0.06% of sessions and 0.05% of revenue across 24 months, and 0.10% of both for 2026 year to date, with ChatGPT "over 80% of all AI referrals" (per Ethercycle, published July 2026, updated August 2026).

Read the three together

QuestionBest available answerConfidence
Is AI traffic growing fast?Yes. 8x sessions and 13x orders year over year in Q1 2026, 3x in Q2High. Shopify's own data, two consecutive quarters
Is it large yet?No. 0.10% of sessions and revenue in a 10-store sample; Shopify says organic alone still beats all AI platforms combinedModerate for the figure, high for the direction
How does Perplexity compare to ChatGPT?ChatGPT dominates by roughly an order of magnitude. Perplexity sat at 7.07% of AI chatbot referrals in March 2026, behind Gemini at 8.65%Moderate. Web-wide, not store-specific

The caveats the study itself states, which we are repeating rather than smoothing over

The authors' own words: "Ten stores is not a sample you run significance tests on"; "These numbers are closer to a ceiling than a floor" because the stores are AI-optimized; all ten are United States based; AI referrals "undercount by nature"; ChatGPT traffic partly hides in Direct, with true volume estimated at 1.1x to 1.6x reported, which would move 0.10% to "at most 0.16%."

We are citing it anyway, because it is the only absolute Shopify figure anyone has published and because a study that lists its own ceiling is more useful than a vendor chart with no method at all. Use it as an order of magnitude, not a benchmark.

Where Perplexity actually sits for a Shopify merchant, precisely

This one needs care, because Shopify's own materials read two ways and both readings are correct.

The Help Center's agentic storefronts channel list names "ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta" (per Shopify Help Center, September 2026). Perplexity is not among the channels you manage under Sales channels > Agentic. Separately, Shopify's own blog states that Shopify Catalog syndicates product data to Perplexity and that merchants can also join the free Perplexity Merchant Program directly (per Shopify blog, April 2026).

Both are true of different things. Catalog syndication is broader than the set of channels Shopify gives you switches for. What follows practically: your products can appear in Perplexity, and you have less channel-level control and less channel-level reporting there than you do for the four named surfaces. We are naming the tension rather than picking a side, because picking one would misrepresent one of the two sources.

When NOT to act on any of these numbers

  • When the number came from a tool vendor without a stated sample. Method or nothing.
  • When somebody quotes a growth multiple as though it were a share. 13x on an undisclosed base is not a size.
  • When you have not measured your own store. Your admin has the only figure that can change a decision you own.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: Measure your own store against 0.10% and stop reading other people's charts. Every published figure is either a ratio with no denominator or a small sample with honest caveats, and neither can tell you whether your brand is ahead or behind.
  • What we refuse to quote: a share of Shopify GMV attributable to AI channels, for any engine. Shopify has had two chances to publish it and has published growth multiples both times.
  • Where we disagree: The GEO tooling category prices itself against an assumption that AI referral volume is already material. On the only Shopify-specific absolute evidence available it sits near a tenth of a percent of revenue, which does not support a five-figure annual tool spend for most brands in this band. Spend the same money on product data, which every channel reads, including the ones that already send you 99.9% of your traffic.
  • What this page adds: the three separate evidence bases and what each one can and cannot answer, the per-engine split from Statcounter with its measurement basis, and exactly where Perplexity sits in Shopify's architecture versus Shopify's marketing.
