Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout even still live for Shopify merchants, given reports it was quietly pulled in March 2026?

ChatGPT Instant Checkout stopped being the way Shopify merchants sell in ChatGPT in March 2026, and the ChatGPT channel itself is live. OpenAI said Instant Checkout is moving to Apps (Search Engine Land, March 2026). Shopify now describes its ChatGPT channel as "a discovery-focused referrer platform", with checkout on your own store (Shopify Help Center, September 2026).

The reports were right about the event and wrong about the conclusion

Two things get conflated here, and keeping them apart is the whole page.

Instant Checkout was OpenAI's in-chat purchase flow: a buyer completed the transaction inside the ChatGPT conversation. In early March 2026 OpenAI changed that. The quoted statement is "Instant Checkout is moving to Apps, where purchases can happen more seamlessly" (per Digital Commerce 360 and Search Engine Land, both 6 March 2026). Reporting the same week noted that "only a small number of merchants were actively using native ChatGPT checkout" (per Search Engine Land, March 2026).

The Shopify ChatGPT channel is a separate thing and it is live. Shopify's own documentation is unambiguous about what it does: "The ChatGPT channel acts as a discovery-focused referrer platform for customers to find your products," and "ChatGPT users complete their purchase on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web" (per Shopify Help Center, September 2026).

So the honest sentence is: the in-chat payment moved, the channel did not. A merchant who concluded from the March headlines that ChatGPT had stopped sending them buyers drew the wrong inference from a true report.

What this actually changes for a Shopify merchant

BeforeAfter
Buyer pays inside the conversationBuyer lands on your checkout, in the ChatGPT in-app browser on mobile or a new tab on desktop
Your checkout is bypassedYour checkout, your Shop Pay, your discounts, your analytics, your post-purchase flow
Attribution depends on the agentThe session hits your store and is attributable like any referral
Merchant integration work required"Agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores" (Shopify, Sep 2026)

Read that column honestly and the March change is not obviously bad news for a mid-market brand. The version that got taken away was the version where you gave up the checkout, the customer record and the merchandising surface. What replaced it is a referral that lands on infrastructure you control.

Requirements, if you want to confirm your own store qualifies

Shopify lists, for the ChatGPT channel: the store must sell to United States customers, products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog, the merchant must agree to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service, and Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Return and Refund Policy must be completed in Settings (per Shopify Help Center, September 2026). Turning it off takes up to 7 days for product data to stop being shared through Shopify Catalog.

Where the confusion keeps coming from

The phrase "agentic commerce" is being used for two different things in the same sentence by most of the trade press: in-chat transaction completion, and AI-surface product discovery. OpenAI retreated on the first. Shopify shipped the second everywhere, and shipped in-chat completion on Google, Copilot and Meta. Any article that reports "agentic commerce stalled" without naming which of the two it means is not reporting a fact.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: The March 2026 change is a de-risking event for merchants, not a setback. Losing in-chat payment means keeping your checkout, your customer record and your attribution, which is what our WAIT verdict on agentic checkout was protecting in the first place (Deploi verdict, September 2026).
  • What we tell clients to do first: confirm the channel state in your own admin under Sales channels, then check whether the four ChatGPT requirements are actually met. We have found published policy pages to be the common failure, and it is the cheapest one to fix.
  • Where we disagree: The trade press treated "OpenAI pulls Instant Checkout" as evidence that agentic commerce was overhyped. The evidence actually points the other way on Shopify specifically, because in-chat checkout shipped on three other surfaces at no platform fee in the same period. One vendor's retreat from one flow is not a category verdict.
  • What this page adds: exactly which of the two things called agentic commerce changed in March 2026, what OpenAI said in its own words, and why the change left Shopify merchants with more of the transaction rather than less.
