Is it possible to buy a pre-built Function for a common use case (like tiered volume discounts) from the Shopify App Store instead of commissioning a custom build?

Yes. The Shopify App Store runs a collection called Discount Apps built on Shopify Functions, and tiered volume discounts are covered several times over. Dealeasy is free to install to 50 orders per month, then $9, $19 and $29 monthly, rated 4.9 stars across 629 reviews (Shopify App Store, September 2026). No-code Function builders also exist.

Two different products, and most buyers only know about one

A finished Function app does one job. You install it, configure the tiers, and it runs. Dealeasy is the clean example: 4.9 stars across 629 reviews, launched 6 June 2023, free to install up to 50 orders a month, then $9 a month to 500 orders, $19 to 1,000 and $29 above that (per Shopify App Store, September 2026).

A Function builder app is the category most people miss. It gives you a configuration interface and generates Functions from it. SMART Functions Creator, from E-TRADE PARTNER, is free, rated 5.0 stars across 116 reviews, launched 12 June 2025, and describes itself as a no-code way to "Build advanced Shopify Functions for tiered discounts, BOGO, bundles, promos, volume discounts functions, payment customizations, delivery customizations, and checkout rules," explicitly with "no coding or Plus plan" (per Shopify App Store, September 2026). PowerX Functions Creator sits in the same category at 4.8 stars across 35 reviews.

That second category changes the build-versus-buy answer for a lot of mid-market teams, because it covers rules that are too specific for a single-purpose app and too small for a commissioned build.

The collection is real and it is large

Shopify curates "Discount Apps built on Shopify Functions," described as "Apps that integrate seamlessly with Shopify admin, enabling you to build unique promotions and shopping experiences." The first page alone runs to more than twenty apps, including Kaching Bundles (5.0 stars, 5,867 reviews), BOGOS Free Gift Bundle Upsell (5.0 stars, 4,360 reviews), Simple Bundles & Kits (4.9 stars, 792 reviews), SMART Bundles Volume Discounts (4.9 stars, 371 reviews), Regios Automatic Discounts (4.9 stars, 196 reviews), Discount Kit (4.9 stars, 95 reviews) and Multiscount: Tiered Discounts (5.0 stars, 26 reviews) (per Shopify App Store, September 2026).

Verify any slug before you cite it. Our own registry has carried wrong App Store slugs, and a single "not currently available" page is not evidence that an app is gone; check twice.

How to choose between a finished app and a builder

Several related rules, or rules that will changeA Function builder app
Not on PlusEither. Both are public apps and work on any plan

The honest limits of buying

  • Preset builders flatten stacked logic. Our Scripts-to-Functions record names this as the buy path's core risk: the near-miss "shows up as margin leakage, not an error message" (Deploi decision record, September 2026). Test your actual collision cases, not the demo.
  • One rule set can become several subscriptions. Same record. Price the whole rule set, not the first app.
  • Configuration lives in the vendor's database. Leaving means rebuilding the configuration, not just uninstalling.
  • Order-banded pricing scales with success. The $9 tier is a 500-order tier. Model your year-three volume.

When NOT to buy

  • When the rule reads data the configuration UI does not expose. Metafield-driven pricing tables are the common example.
  • When two apps would both be writing discounts. Two discount Functions arguing over the same cart is a support case nobody can reproduce.
  • When the near-miss costs more than the build. If a 5% gap in stacking logic costs more per year than $25,000, the arithmetic has flipped and the record's own build band applies.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: buy first, and specifically check the builder category before you conclude your rule is custom. We have watched requirements that were scoped as builds turn out to be a free app and an afternoon of configuration, and we would rather tell you that than invoice for it.
  • What we’ve seen: the requirement that genuinely needs a custom Function usually announces itself the same way: the rule depends on a value that lives in a metafield, an ERP or a customer segment that no configuration screen knows about. Everything else is a shopping exercise.
  • Where we disagree: the standard advice is "apps for simple, custom for complex," which is not actionable because everyone believes their rule is complex. The actionable test is narrower: can the rule be expressed using only fields a configuration UI exposes? If yes, buy, however complicated it feels.
  • What this page adds: that Function builder apps are a distinct category from finished Function apps, that they work without Plus, and the named, rated, dated examples of both. The parent asks who builds; this page shows the case where nobody does.
