Shopify Plus vs Advanced

Is the Advanced-plan staff cap of 15 accounts the real reason mid-market brands upgrade to Plus, or is it usually the checkout features?

Short answer

The Advanced plan's 15-account staff cap is rarely why brands move to Shopify Plus; checkout limits are (Deploi's judgment). Collaborators and point-of-sale-only staff don't count toward it (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Only Plus runs app extensions on checkout's information, shipping and payment steps (Shopify developer docs, October 2026), so no app gets around that gate.

Deploi’s call

The Advanced plan's 15-account staff cap is a symptom, not the reason to move to Plus. A store that has genuinely outgrown 15 payrolled admin users has usually outgrown Advanced's checkout too. Put the checkout on the business case, because it is the constraint with no workaround.

BuyMove to Plus when

  • Your roadmap needs a field, message or other interface element on the information, shipping or payment steps, which only Plus stores can extend (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
  • You need Shopify Functions logic that no public App Store app sells, because only Plus runs custom apps with Function application programming interfaces (APIs) (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
  • Your identity team needs Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) sign-in or System for Cross-domain Identity Management (SCIM) provisioning, which only Plus organizations get (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

WaitStay on Advanced while

  • The only pressure is the 15-user staff count, and agencies and freelancers can move to collaborator accounts, which don't count toward it (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Your checkout wish list is Thank you and Order status page content, which every plan except Starter can extend (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
  • A public App Store app already sells the discount, delivery or payment rule you need.

Does the 15-account staff cap force a move to Shopify Plus?

Rarely, because the Advanced plan's 15-account staff cap counts only staff accounts, and the people most likely to push a store past it don't need one. Shopify's user table lists Advanced at 15 users and Shopify Plus at unlimited. Besides the store owner and the organization owner, two unlimited user types sit outside that limit (Shopify Help Center, October 2026):

  • Collaborators. These are “Shopify Partners who you've allowed to access your store or organization” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so agencies and freelance developers working through a Partner account take no seat.
  • Staff who only use point of sale (POS). They log in only at POS Pro locations and never see the admin, so store associates take no seat either (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

That leaves your own staff accounts: merchandising, customer service, finance and any warehouse staff who need the admin. In our judgment, a brand selling $10M to $30M a year can genuinely pass 15 of those, and an access audit usually finds seats held by people who have left. Staff seats weighed against wholesale catalog limits is the operations manager's view of the same cap, and whether Advanced leaves money on the table at $1M a month prices the rest of the upgrade.

What does Shopify Plus add for staff beyond unlimited seats?

Shopify Plus adds staff governance that Advanced cannot buy, not just a bigger count. Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) single sign-on and System for Cross-domain Identity Management (SCIM) provisioning are “available only for organizations on the Shopify Plus plan” (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). SCIM lets your identity provider create users, assign or update groups and deactivate users in Shopify (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Custom user groups, which assign permissions in bulk, appear only in the Plus column of Shopify's plan comparison (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).

Governance matters when an identity provider already runs joiners and leavers, because offboarding then reaches Shopify without a manual step. Deploi's record on staff provisioning tells stores below Plus to put SCIM on the Plus business case rather than fund a workaround (October 2026). So if staff is the trigger, write identity governance into the business case and leave the Advanced plan's 15-account cap out of it.

Why does checkout force the upgrade when the staff cap does not?

Checkout forces the move to Shopify Plus because its Plus gate binds every app, while the Advanced plan's 15-account staff cap has exits: collaborator and point-of-sale-only accounts use no seat. Checkout user interface (UI) extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps are “available only to stores on a Shopify Plus plan” (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). The rule applies to App Store apps as well as your own, so no purchase adds a field, banner or other interface element there for an Advanced store. Advanced is not shut out of checkout entirely, which is why a wish list needs sorting before it becomes an upgrade case (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Custom apps that contain Shopify Function application programming interfaces (APIs) are the other Plus-only line (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).

Which upgrade reasons do brands state, and which ones hold up?

Brands most often name staff seats as their reason to move to Shopify Plus, and in Deploi's scoping calls a checkout requirement is most often the reason that holds up.

Deploi's read of its scoping calls: staff seats are a common stated reason for Plus and rarely the actual one
Upgrade triggerHow often it is the stated reasonHow often it is the actual reason
A checkout requirement nobody can ship as an appSometimesMost of the time
Custom function logic for discounts, shipping rules or validationSometimesOften, and usually found mid-project
Third-party payment processor feesRarelyOften, once the 0.6% to 0.2% fee cut is priced
Staff seatsOftenRarely, and usually a stale-seat problem
Expansion stores for a new marketSometimesSometimes, and a legitimate reason
Deploi's judgment from its own scoping conversations, not a survey. Third-party transaction fee: 0.6% on Advanced, 0.2% on Plus (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).

The gap between the two columns has a cause. Seat pressure comes up in every meeting and often costs nothing to relieve, so it gets named first. Checkout requirements surface later, in scoping, because they come from a customer or a finance team.

What should you check before staff seats go into a Plus business case?

Check five things before a staff seat count goes into a Shopify Plus business case, because the first two cost nothing and often end the seat argument.

  1. Audit the 15 Advanced staff accounts. Pull the user list and deactivate staff who have left.
  2. Reclassify partners. Anyone who works through a Shopify Partner account should be a collaborator, not staff.
  3. Move register-only staff to point of sale (POS) only access. POS-only staff don't use a seat, though adding them needs at least one POS Pro location (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  4. Write the checkout requirement down. One paragraph: what has to appear, on which step, driven by which data. Then ask whether any App Store app ships it.
  5. Only then price the plans. Deploi's checkout features record scores which checkout changes need Plus (October 2026).

When does a checkout wish list still not need Plus?

A checkout wish list still doesn't need Shopify Plus when every item can run after purchase, inside a public app or as a market override.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

What we’ve seen
Seat-cap urgency almost always softens after an access audit. Checkout urgency never softens, because the requirement came from a customer or a finance team and it does not go away when you look at it harder.
Where we disagree
Plus sales conversations lead with unlimited staff accounts because it is the easiest row in the comparison table to understand. It is also the row with a free workaround sitting one line below it. Leading with it trains buyers to evaluate the plan on the wrong axis.
What this page adds
Which users never count toward Advanced's 15 (collaborators and point-of-sale-only staff), which staff features are genuinely Plus-only (SAML single sign-on, SCIM provisioning and custom user groups), how to sort a checkout wish list into what Advanced already allows and what only Plus can ship, and the checks to run before a seat count goes into a business case.

When this answer changes

  • Shopify changes the Advanced plan's 15-user limit, or the user types that don't count toward it.
  • Shopify opens checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping or payment steps to plans below Plus.
  • Shopify lets custom apps with Shopify Function APIs run on Advanced.
  • Shopify makes SAML single sign-on or SCIM provisioning available to organizations below Plus.
  • Your admin-user count still passes 15 after an access audit.
