Scripts to Functions

Is it possible to buy a pre-built Function for a common use case (like tiered volume discounts) from the Shopify App Store instead of commissioning a custom build?

Short answer

Yes: Shopify's App Store curates 34 discount apps built on Shopify Functions, the code Shopify runs at checkout. Several of them sell tiered volume discounts (Shopify App Store, October 2026). Dealeasy, a volume discount app, is free to 50 orders a month, then $9 to $29 USD monthly (Dealeasy listing, October 2026). No-code Function builders cover rules no single app ships.

Deploi’s call

Buy first, and specifically check the builder category before you conclude your rule is custom. We have watched requirements that were scoped as builds turn out to be a free app and an afternoon of configuration, and we would rather tell you that than invoice for it.

BuyBuy a pre-built Function app when

  • Two related rules fit one no-code builder's settings, such as SMART Functions Creator at $19.99 a month for up to 2 active functions (SMART Functions Creator listing, October 2026).
  • A packaged app already expresses the rule, such as volume tiers, a buy one, get one (BOGO) offer or a spend threshold. Deploi's custom discount types record scores those rules BUY, even on Shopify Plus (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
  • Your store is below Shopify Plus, so public App Store apps that contain functions are the only route (shopify.dev, October 2026).

BuildCommission a custom Function when

  • The rule reads data no settings screen exposes, such as a metafield pricing table combined with customer and cart conditions.
  • A near-miss in an app's stacking logic would leak more margin in a year than a build costs. Deploi's custom discount types record puts one new discount Function at an illustrative $8,000 to $25,000 (Deploi decision record, October 2026).
  • The pricing rule is your competitive advantage, and your store is on Shopify Plus.

What pre-built Shopify Functions can you buy instead of a custom build?

You can buy two kinds of pre-built Shopify Function on the Shopify App Store: finished apps that do one job, and Function builders that generate Functions from settings. Shopify Functions are custom code that Shopify runs at checkout, and stores on any plan can use public apps that contain them (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Whether an agency or your own developer should build one instead is a separate staffing decision.

A finished app does one job: you install it, set the tiers and it runs. Shopify's App Store collection Discount Apps built on Shopify Functions lists 34 apps (Shopify App Store, October 2026). Tiered volume apps among them include Regios Automatic Discounts, with 4.9 stars from 207 reviews, and Multiscount: Tiered Discounts, with 5.0 stars from 26 reviews.

Dealeasy sits outside that collection, but its listing shows the app edits Shopify Functions. The volume discount app launched in June 2023 and has 4.9 stars from 636 reviews. Dealeasy is free up to 50 orders a month, then $9 a month to 500 orders, $19 to 1,000 and $29 above that, billed in USD (Dealeasy listing, October 2026).

What do no-code Function builders cost on a live store?

Three no-code Function builders list live-store plans from free to $299 a month as of October 2026. SMART Functions Creator and PowerX Functions Creator start at $19.99 and $39 a month. Both are free only on dev stores, Shopify's test stores that "can't be used in production or process real transactions" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). A builder generates Functions from settings, so it covers rules too specific for a single-purpose app and too small for a custom build.

  • SMART Functions Creator, from the developer SMART Functions, has 5.0 stars from 127 reviews. It builds discount, bundle, payment, delivery and checkout-rule Functions with "no coding or Plus plan required". Its Lite plan costs $19.99 a month for up to 2 active functions and Pro $39.99 for unlimited, each with a 7-day trial (SMART Functions Creator listing, October 2026).
  • PowerX Functions Creator, from CodeInspire.io, has 4.8 stars from 35 reviews. Its free plan is "Only for development stores & testing", and its paid plans cost $39, $99 and $299 a month (PowerX Functions Creator listing, October 2026).
  • Functions Creator & Discount, from Nexus Functions, has 5.0 stars from 30 reviews. Its listing shows a free plan for one discount campaign and a $9.99 Basic plan for two (Functions Creator & Discount listing, October 2026). Nexus's own site calls its free plan "Perfect for testing and development" (Nexus Functions, October 2026).

A free dev store plan makes a no-cost rule rehearsal possible.

How do you choose between a finished app and a Function builder?

Choose a finished app for one stable rule and a Function builder for several related rules, because a finished app sells one rule shape and a builder sells many. Neither fits a rule that reads data no settings screen can see, so that rule is the custom case.

A finished app fits one stable rule, a Function builder fits several changing rules, and neither fits data no settings screen exposes

What are the limits of buying a pre-built Function?

A pre-built Function is limited to the rule shapes its settings expose, so test your real discount collisions, not the vendor's demo, before you trust it. Deploi's Scripts-to-Functions record lists this among the buy path's hidden costs: "Preset builders flatten stacked logic, and the near-miss shows up as margin leakage, not an error message" (Deploi decision record, October 2026).

  • Two discount apps can collide. Shopify runs all discount Functions concurrently, and they "have no knowledge of each other" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Your discount combination settings decide what stacks.
  • Configuration lives in the vendor's admin. Leaving means rebuilding every campaign's settings, not just uninstalling the app.
  • Order-banded prices rise with success. Dealeasy's $9 tier stops at 500 orders a month (Dealeasy listing, October 2026), so price your year-three volume. The three-year build-versus-app arithmetic shows when a build overtakes the subscription.

When should you not buy a pre-built Function?

Don't buy a pre-built Function when the rule reads data its settings cannot see, when a second app would also write discounts, or when the near-miss would cost more than a build.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

What we’ve seen
The requirement that genuinely needs a custom Function usually announces itself the same way: the rule depends on a value that lives in a metafield, an ERP or a customer segment that no configuration screen knows about. Everything else is a shopping exercise.
Where we disagree
The standard advice is "apps for simple, custom for complex," which is not actionable because everyone believes their rule is complex. The actionable test is narrower: can the rule be expressed using only fields a configuration UI exposes? If yes, buy, however complicated it feels.
What this page adds
The parent answer asks who builds a custom Function. This page shows the case where nobody does: finished Function apps and no-code Function builders as two different purchases, what each costs on a live store as of October 2026, and the test that tells you when neither fits.

When this answer changes

  • SMART Functions Creator or PowerX Functions Creator changes its plans, including the 2-function cap on SMART's $19.99 Lite plan.
  • Dealeasy changes its order bands or its $9 to $29 monthly prices.
  • Shopify changes which plans can use custom apps that contain Function APIs, Plus only as of October 2026.
  • Shopify changes how concurrent discount Functions combine, or its cap of 25 active discount Functions per store.
  • Deploi re-scores its custom discount types record, which scores volume, tiered and buy one, get one rules BUY on Plus.
