Is upgrading to Shopify Plus actually a legitimate performance-improvement strategy, or does it only address checkout-specific scale, not general site speed?
Short answer
Shopify Plus is not a site-speed upgrade, because every Shopify plan gets the same hosting: "Fast load times and unlimited bandwidth" (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). Plus adds checkout scale for flash sales instead: high-volume checkout and bot protection (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). Storefront speed comes from your theme, apps and added third-party code (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Hosting on every plan
- Unlimited web hosting and bandwidthShopify's pricing table marks unlimited web hosting and a free SSL certificate on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus alike; the hosting tooltip reads "Fast load times and unlimited bandwidth.".Source: Shopify (Pricing)
- Plus-only flash-sale tools
- High-volume checkout and bot protectionShopify says high-volume checkout can "handle up to 40K checkouts per minute" and that bot protection "Protects your store from bots during flash sales." Neither row changes page load speed.Source: Shopify (Pricing)

Deploi’s call
No, because Shopify Plus buys checkout scale and operational headroom, not a faster Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), the load-speed metric. We score the Plus upgrade BUY the year a Plus-only capability is funded or card-rate savings cover the plan-fee gap (Deploi decision record, October 2026). We score site speed optimization BUILD and third-party script governance CUSTOMIZE: buy the monitoring, build the gate (Deploi decision records, October 2026).
BuildFix speed in the theme and app stack when
- Field data fails on LCP or Interaction to Next Paint (INP); Deploi's site speed record scores that fix BUILD (October 2026).
- Uninstalled apps left code behind, because uninstalling doesn't automatically remove an app's code from your theme (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Several teams add tags without review, where Deploi's script governance record says to buy monitoring first (October 2026).
BuyMove to Plus when
- Your roadmap needs full checkout customization, which Shopify lists only on Plus (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).
- You run drops that need high-volume checkout, bot protection or Launchpad, Shopify's sale scheduler, all Plus-only (shopify.com/pricing; Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- You need more than 10 inventory locations or 3 business-to-business (B2B) catalogs (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026).
- Card-rate savings cover the $1,901 to $2,201 monthly plan-fee gap from Advanced (Deploi arithmetic, October 2026), as the $1M-a-month answer works through.

Does Shopify Plus give your store faster hosting than other plans?
No: Shopify Plus gets the same storefront hosting as Basic, Grow and Advanced, because Shopify's pricing page lists one set of hosting rows for all four plans. Every plan gets unlimited web hosting, described as "Fast load times and unlimited bandwidth," and a free Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). Shopify's performance guide adds that every online store runs on "fast, global servers" behind a content delivery network (CDN) run by Cloudflare (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
The rows that change with the plan sit elsewhere on the pricing page: checkout customization, application programming interface (API) rate limits and flash-sale tools. None of them promises a faster product page. The API limits that do change govern apps, not shoppers, as Shopify's infrastructure by plan explains.
What does Shopify Plus buy, and does any of it speed up your pages?
Shopify Plus buys checkout control, flash-sale tools, higher application programming interface (API) limits and business-to-business (B2B) headroom, and none of it makes a product page load faster.
| Feature | Advanced | Plus | Faster page loads? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Checkout customization | Limited | Full, including the information, shipping and payment pages | No |
| Custom Shopify Functions (your own discount and checkout logic) | No | Yes | No |
| High-volume checkout | No | Up to 40K checkouts a minute | No |
| Bot protection | No | Yes, for flash sales | No |
| Launchpad scheduling | No | Yes | No |
| API rate limits | Up to 2x on select APIs | Up to 10x on select APIs | No |
| B2B catalogs and inventory locations | 3 catalogs, 10 locations | Unlimited catalogs, 200 locations | No |
| Expansion stores (extra stores for the same brand) and support | None; enhanced live chat | Up to 9 free; priority support | No |
So the plan decision and the speed decision are separate. For brands that run drops, two rows matter, high-volume checkout and bot protection, because both act at the checkout when demand spikes.
Where does checkout scale actually differ by plan?
Checkout scale differs by plan only for flash sales: Shopify keeps high-volume checkout for Plus, "Built for flash sales and peak traffic events" (shopify.com/pricing, October 2026). Platform capacity is shared. Shopify Engineering's November 2025 post says its Black Friday Cyber Monday (BFCM) scale tests reached "146 million requests per minute and 80,000+ checkouts per minute" (Shopify Engineering, October 2026). Its last test of the year ran at 200 million requests per minute. The post says scale testing validates "the entire platform working together at BFCM volumes."
So a Basic store and a Plus store sit behind the same preparation, which means checkout capacity is a question about drops, not about speed. Whether high-volume checkout matters below enterprise scale turns on whether your demand arrives in spikes. High-volume checkout does not change how fast a product page paints.
What actually slows down a Shopify storefront?
A Shopify storefront slows down because of what sits on top of the platform. Shopify names the three biggest factors: your theme, your installed apps and third-party code you added by hand, "including tag managers and the tags within them" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Images add weight too, since "Pages with numerous high-quality images can load slowly."
Removing an app does not remove its weight, because "Uninstalling an app doesn't automatically remove its code from your theme." A store that has tried thirty apps over four years can still load code from apps nobody remembers buying, and that code costs the same on Plus. Shopify adds that poor Interaction to Next Paint (INP), its responsiveness metric, most likely means "too much JavaScript" from theme, app or tag-manager code. Whether that needs an agency or an in-house day depends on which symptom your field data shows.
When is upgrading to Plus the wrong answer to a performance problem?
Upgrading to Shopify Plus is the wrong answer to a performance problem whenever the complaint is speed or uptime, because neither improves with the plan. It is also wrong when speed is carrying a move nobody has priced or will use.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- What we’ve seen
- In our media-loading and vendor-widget work, the storefront speed problem has been image strategy and third-party scripts, not the plan. The two recurring culprits are a hero image served far larger than its rendered size and a tag manager carrying tags from campaigns that ended long ago. Both cost the same to fix on Basic and on Plus.
- Where we disagree
- Plus is sold with performance adjacency, the implication that a bigger plan is a faster store. Shopify's own published entitlements do not support it, and we would rather point at the pricing page than argue. If a sales conversation has moved from checkout capability to site speed, the conversation has left the product.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify changes the hosting rows on its pricing page, or ties hosting, bandwidth or its content delivery network to a plan.
- Shopify adds a storefront performance feature to Plus, such as per-script attribution or a faster delivery tier.
- Shopify moves high-volume checkout, bot protection or Launchpad to plans below Plus.
- Shopify changes Plus's $2,300 and $2,500 term prices or Advanced's $399 monthly price.
- Deploi re-scores its site speed or Plus upgrade decision record.
Follow-up questions
What's inside the number
- Do all Shopify stores on the same plan get identical baseline infrastructure performance, or does Plus actually run on faster infrastructure?
Shopify Plus runs on the same storefront infrastructure as every plan, because every online store gets fast global servers and a Cloudflare content delivery network (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
What to do next
- How do I know if my Shopify performance problem is severe enough to justify hiring an agency versus something my in-house team can fix in a day?
A Shopify performance problem needs an agency only when the fix needs profiling or code you cannot edit, like theme JavaScript.
Related questions
- At $1M+/month in online sales, is staying on Advanced actually leaving money on the table by not upgrading to Plus?
Shopify Advanced at $1M a month leaves money on the table with a third-party processor or a funded Plus-only capability.
- Is 'high-volume checkout' (10K+ checkouts/minute) ever relevant to a brand still deciding between Advanced and Plus, or is that purely an enterprise-scale concern?
Shopify Plus's high-volume checkout is a drop concern, not an enterprise concern.
- Does Advanced get the same 99.99% uptime positioning and priority support as Plus, or is that support-tier difference real?
Shopify Advanced shares the 99.99% peak-event uptime average Shopify markets for Plus but not Plus's priority support, so support is the real difference.
