Home>Apps & Integrations>Subscriptions>Do Shopify Subscriptions Work for B2B?

Should we bundle subscriptions with our new B2B wholesale channel, and does any Shopify subscription app support company-level recurring orders?

Shopify lists subscriptions among the features incompatible with B2B, so no app delivers company-level recurring orders on the native B2B channel (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026). Subscriptions are also incompatible with draft orders, the mechanism most B2B purchasing runs on. Standing wholesale orders belong in reorder tooling and Flow automation, or in a separate D2C storefront.

The direct answer: Shopify can't do this, and no app fixes it

Shopify's B2B requirements and considerations page lists Subscriptions among the features incompatible with B2B, alongside accelerated checkouts, local delivery and pickup points, tipping, legacy customer accounts and checkout.liquid customizations (per Shopify's Help Center, verified September 2026). Separately, subscriptions can't be used with draft orders (per Shopify, September 2026), and draft orders are a core B2B flow.

Subscription apps build on Shopify's selling plan and subscription contract APIs. When the underlying channel doesn't accept a subscription contract, a third-party app cannot manufacture one. Treat any vendor claim of "B2B subscriptions on Shopify" as a claim about a workaround, and ask which of those two documented incompatibilities it avoids.

What to do instead, in order

  1. Use B2B's own reordering primitives. Companies and company locations, quantity rules and price breaks, net payment terms and payment reminders, ACH and vaulted cards, draft orders, easy reorders, PO numbers and the quick order list all run on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026). For most wholesale accounts, a saved order plus a one-click reorder is what "subscription" meant in the brief.
  2. Automate the reminder, not the billing. Shopify Flow is available to B2B. A scheduled workflow that prompts a buyer at their replenishment interval reproduces most of the commercial value of a standing order without a subscription contract.
  3. Keep the D2C subscription program on the D2C storefront. Running both is normal. Bundling them into one channel is what breaks.
  4. Check the plan gate before scoping. Deposits, partial payments, payment-per-fulfillment, unlimited catalogs and direct company-catalog assignment are Shopify Plus only (per Shopify, September 2026). If your wholesale terms need deposits, that is a Plus conversation regardless of the recurring question.
  5. Scope a custom layer only with eyes open. A genuine company-level recurring order on Shopify is custom work against the order and customer APIs, with its own dunning, approvals and terms handling. Our product-subscriptions decision scores the custom-portal lane at $30,000–$75,000 and 10–16 weeks for the D2C case (Deploi estimate, illustrative, August 2026); the B2B case is not smaller.

Should you bundle them at all? Usually no. A wholesale buyer reorders against inventory and budget cycles, not a calendar, and a fixed recurring charge against a company account creates a credit and returns problem your D2C program never had.

This page describes platform capability, not commercial or legal advice on your wholesale terms.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: "B2B subscriptions on Shopify" is a requirement that should be rewritten before it is scoped. What the business wants is predictable reorders; what the platform blocks is recurring billing on the B2B channel. Those are different problems, and the first one has a native answer.
  • What we’ve seen: Requirements that combine a new channel with a new commercial model tend to fail on the channel, not the model. The B2B launch is the risk; the standing order is a phase two that often turns out to be a reminder workflow.
  • Where we disagree: Wholesale-app marketing implies recurring B2B ordering is a configuration away. Shopify's own compatibility list says otherwise, and we would rather tell you that in discovery than in week six.
  • What this page adds: that the B2B channel excludes subscriptions outright, and the native reorder path that replaces the requirement.
