What is the best Shopify app for a subscription box business specifically (vs a simple recurring-order model)?
Loop Subscriptions is the strongest Shopify-native pick for a true box business, shipping a subscription box builder, fixed and build-your-own bundles, and prepaid and gift subscriptions on its $399/month Pro tier (verified September 2026). Recharge puts customizable bundles behind its $499/month Plus plan. Shopify's free native app excludes bundles entirely, which rules it out for curated boxes.
A box is a different product from a recurring order
A replenishment subscription ships the same SKU on a cadence. A box assembles a changing set of SKUs, often chosen by the subscriber, often prepaid, often gifted, and it needs the cycle to be editable before it locks. That difference is why the native app is out before the comparison starts: bundles aren't compatible with Shopify Subscriptions (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026), and gift cards apply only to the first payment.

The verdict, with the profile it's right for
Loop Subscriptions wins the default case: a $20M–$150M box business that wants box-building, bundles and gifting in one contract, and that would rather pay a flat tier plus a sub-1% rate than a per-transaction rate plus a per-order cent charge. The box builder is the product here, not an add-on.
Recharge wins one specific profile: a business already running Recharge for replenishment that is adding a box line. Consolidating onto the $499/month Plus plan beats running two subscription platforms and reconciling two subscriber tables.
Smartrr fits the smaller end, where swaps and sequential subscriptions matter more than catalog scale, and where a 70-review listing is an acceptable maturity signal.
A boundary worth stating. Subbly is a standalone subscription-commerce platform rather than a Shopify app, and positions itself as an alternative to Shopify with "no plugins needed" (per subbly.co, September 2026). For a merchant at this revenue band with a Shopify storefront, catalog and ERP integrations already in place, replatforming the box line onto a separate system is a much larger decision than choosing an app. We would not recommend it on box features alone.
The Deploi point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.
- Our take: Pick the box platform on curation and cycle-edit mechanics, not on price. The fee difference between these three is small next to the cost of a box builder that cannot express your curation rules.
- What we’ve seen: Box programs fail on the cycle cutoff, not the subscription. Subscribers edit late, operations cut the pick list early, and the gap between those two dates is where support tickets and involuntary churn come from. Ask every vendor to demo that window, in that order.
- Where we disagree: The category sells box features as a tier upgrade. We read them as a different product, which is why a business that is genuinely box-first should evaluate box-first tooling rather than buying the top tier of a replenishment platform.
- What this page adds: that native is disqualified for boxes by a documented incompatibility, and which vendor tier each box mechanic actually sits on.
