Home>Apps & Integrations>Subscriptions>What Shopify Native Subscriptions Can't Do

What subscription features does Shopify's native Subscriptions app NOT cover that force an upgrade to Recharge or Skio?

Shopify Subscriptions excludes five things that push mid-market merchants onto a paid platform: product bundles, draft orders, local payment methods, order edits through the order editing API, and gift cards or Scripts discounts beyond the first payment (per Shopify's Help Center, September 2026). Retention tooling is the sixth gap, and the one that actually drives upgrades.

The documented hard stops

These are not settings. They are compatibility statements in Shopify's own documentation, and no configuration work gets around them.

GapShopify's wordingWho it blocks
Bundles"Bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app"Curated boxes, build-your-own kits
Draft orders"Subscriptions can't be used with draft orders"Anything sales-assisted, and all B2B
Local payment methods"Customers can't use local payment methods to purchase subscriptions"International programs outside card rails
Order editing"The order edits API doesn't support subscriptions"Support teams fixing a cycle from admin
Gift cards"Gift cards that are used to pay for subscriptions apply only to the first payment"Gifting and prepaid mechanics
Scripts discountsApply "only to the first payment"Promotional pricing across cycles

All rows per Shopify's Help Center, verified September 2026.

Supported gateways are Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen and Stripe, the last for select merchants only (per Shopify, September 2026). Recurring shipments default to the least expensive available shipping method after the first delivery, which surprises teams running service-level promises.

The gap nobody lists, and the one that moves budgets

The six rows above explain the hard stops. They do not explain most upgrades. Merchants who leave native leave for retention machinery: cancellation save flows, swap and skip logic with merchandising behind it, prepaid and gift cycles, dunning with card-updater depth, and cohort reporting that shows churn by signup month rather than by order.

Recharge sells exactly that, and prices it accordingly: customizable bundles, loyalty and referrals sit on the $499/month Plus plan, not the $99/month Starter (per Recharge's pricing page, September 2026).

The verdict, with the profile it fits

Stay native if you sell standard products on fixed cadences and your gifting requirement is a wishlist item rather than a roadmap commitment. Upgrade if any one of the six hard stops sits on your critical path, or if a named person owns churn and has run out of levers. Our Skio-versus-native verdict is WAIT for exactly the first profile and BUY only at bundles, draft orders and local payment methods (Deploi verdict, September 2026).

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: Five of the six documented gaps are narrower than they look, and the sixth one is not on the list. Teams upgrade for retention tooling and then justify it with the bundles row.
  • What we’ve seen: In the five PDP subscription builds we've shipped, the requirement written down as "we need bundles" was twice actually "we need a second variant on the selector." Read the gap list against your real merchandising, not against the roadmap deck.
  • Where we disagree: Vendor comparisons present the native app as feature-poor. It is feature-narrow, which is different: what it does, it does on Shopify's own rails, with no exit project attached.
  • What this page adds: the exact documented incompatibilities, in Shopify's own words, and which of them are real budget drivers.
