Data & Customer Migration

Do custom payment-term agreements (e.g., net-45 negotiated for one specific account) migrate correctly to Shopify B2B's payment-terms feature, or default to standard terms?

Short answer

Net 45 migrates exactly, because net 45 is one of Shopify's six net payment terms for business-to-business (B2B) accounts (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A term outside the list doesn't fall back to a standard term. Unless you map it, the company location keeps Shopify's default, No payment terms, and the buyer pays at checkout.

Deploi’s call

Net 45 and every other term on Shopify's payment terms list migrate exactly, so check that list before you scope anything. We have seen more than one business-to-business (B2B) scope include a payment-terms build for terms that Shopify already ships. Net 45 is the one that catches people, because it sounds bespoke and it is not.

WaitRenegotiate odd terms onto Shopify's list while

  • Fewer than five accounts carry a term outside the list, which in our judgment a call to each account settles before cutover.
  • The odd term is a day count near a listed one, such as net 75 moving to net 60 or net 90 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • A handful of accounts buy on terms, which our net terms record scores WAIT, because native terms cover them on any paid plan (October 2026).

CustomizeCarry the exceptions in Shopify when

  • A contract fixes a large account's term outside Shopify's list, such as net 120 or end of month plus 30 (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • The store runs Shopify Plus, which setting terms at checkout requires (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
  • A custom Shopify Function or the Tenor: B2B Payment Terms app passes a pilot on one account first, since Tenor had no reviews (Tenor listing, October 2026).

Does a negotiated net 45 carry over to Shopify B2B exactly?

A negotiated net 45 carries over exactly, because net 45 is on Shopify's list of business-to-business (B2B) payment terms: net 7, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90, plus due on fulfillment (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). You assign it to the account's company location, and "All terms start from the day the order is placed." Merchants can't add terms of their own, because Shopify's application programming interface (API) returns templates "eligible for all shops and users" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). So net 45 is the easy row in the full map of a wholesale account's credit data. After cutover it runs like any other term: how net terms work from order to payment.

What happens to a negotiated term that isn't on Shopify's list?

A negotiated term that isn't on Shopify's list doesn't fall back to a standard term, because Shopify has no matching term to put it on. A company location with no term keeps Shopify's default, No payment terms: "Payment is due immediately. This is the default setting." (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The bulk route Shopify's Help Center names, Matrixify (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), accepts only blank, Due on fulfillment and Net 7 to Net 90 for a location's terms (Matrixify, October 2026). So an unmapped net 75 account arrives on pay at checkout, and the first sign is a buyer asked for a card.

How do you carry a B2B term that Shopify doesn't list?

Shopify gives a business-to-business (B2B) term outside its list three routes, and only two work below Shopify Plus.

  1. Renegotiate it onto a listed term. In our judgment this is the cheapest route, because moving three accounts from net 75 to net 60 or net 90 removes a build.
  2. Set a fixed date on each draft order. Fixed-date terms work on individual draft orders (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so end of month plus 30 becomes a date someone sets by hand.
  3. Set the term at checkout, on Shopify Plus only. The Payment Customization Function can set "net terms, fixed due dates, and event-based terms", and that operation "is only available on stores with the Plus plan" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Its net option takes only 7, 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 days, so a function sets net 75 as a fixed due date (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).

Shopify says these dynamic terms can depend on "customer type, items in the cart, the cart total value, or specific metafields" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So on Plus, a negotiated term imported into a company metafield can drive the rule. Tenor: B2B Payment Terms sells the Plus route as an app at $29 a month, where every non-standard value "becomes an exact due date". Tenor launched on 10 July 2026, had no reviews and "Requires Plus + B2B" (Tenor listing, October 2026).

Do open invoices keep their negotiated due dates in Shopify?

Open invoices keep their negotiated due dates only if the import writes those dates onto each order. Shopify's application programming interface (API) can create payment terms on an order, including terms where "payment is due on a fixed date" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). So an invoice due on day 75 can arrive with its exact due date, even though no net 75 term exists. Open quotes are a separate job: quotes migrate as draft orders, where a fixed due date is set per draft order (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

How should you sort negotiated terms before cutover?

Sort negotiated terms by how many accounts carry each one, then renegotiate the tail before you build anything.

  1. Extract every distinct term in the legacy system, with a count of accounts on each, not the ones people remember.
  2. Sort by account count. In our judgment the long tail is usually one or two accounts per oddity.
  3. Renegotiate the tail to a listed term before cutover. It's the unpopular recommendation and almost always the cheapest, because a phone call costs nothing and removes a build.
  4. Build only for the exceptions you can't renegotiate, usually your largest accounts with contractual terms.
  5. Record the mapping decision per account, with a date, so the account manager has an answer when a buyer asks why the term changed.

When shouldn't you build a payment customization for one term?

Don't build a payment customization when a manual route covers the accounts, or when the term isn't really a term.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
The category treats "custom payment terms" as a single feature gap. It is two unrelated gaps. Non-standard day counts are trivial and negotiable. Conditional terms are a Function build. Quoting them together produces a number that is wrong in both directions.
Our judgment, not a measurement
The long tail of negotiated terms in a mid-market wholesale book is usually short, and usually inherited rather than defended. Cutover is the only moment when sales will agree to tidy it up, so use it.
What this page adds
that a negotiated term Shopify doesn't list lands on the No payment terms default, so the buyer pays at checkout, rather than on a standard net term; that Shopify's bulk route accepts only eight payment terms values; and that open orders keep exact due dates only when the import writes them through the API.

Decision records behind this answer

When this answer changes

  • Shopify adds payment terms beyond net 7 to net 90, an end-of-month term or an early-payment discount.
  • Shopify opens the Payment Customization Function's payment terms operation to plans below Plus.
  • Matrixify's companies template accepts more payment terms values, or Shopify adds a native company import.
  • Tenor: B2B Payment Terms gathers reviews, changes its price or drops its Plus requirement.
  • Shopify changes the default for company locations with no payment terms assigned.
