Do AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Gemini still use traditional SEO signals (meta titles, schema, backlinks), or do they rely on something else entirely?

Short answer

Yes: AI answer engines still lean on traditional search engine optimization (SEO) signals, because they retrieve pages through search. Google says its AI features “are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems” (Google Search Central, October 2026). Gemini can ground answers in Google's index (Google's docs, October 2026). ChatGPT search “sometimes partners with other search providers” (OpenAI, October 2026), though OpenAI names no ranking signals.

Deploi’s call

AI answer engines' signals overlap heavily with traditional search engine optimization (SEO), and Google now says so in writing. What changes is the unit an engine shows: a piece of a page, not the whole page. So, in our judgment, the work that moves citation is a clearly stated answer and complete product data, not title tags or AI files. We scored AI answer-engine visibility CUSTOMIZE for exactly this reason. Buy the cheap technical hygiene, then build the measurement and the content, because no app can promise that ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity will recommend you (Deploi verdict, September 2026).

CustomizeKeep funding core SEO for AI answers when

  • Your key pages are indexed and eligible for a snippet, and Search Console's generative AI control still reads Include, its default (Google Search Central, Search Console Help, October 2026).
  • Your robots.txt lets OpenAI's search crawler reach the store, which OpenAI requires before ChatGPT search can show a page (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026).
  • Your product data is complete in Shopify, because Shopify Catalog sends it to ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

WaitSpend nothing AI-specific while

  • A vendor sells llms.txt, an agent discovery file: Shopify serves one on every store, and Google Search ignores it (Shopify Help Center, Google, October 2026).
  • A tool's AI visibility score is the only evidence on offer. Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record holds paid tiers on WAIT until your own prompt panel, a fixed set of buyer questions run on a schedule, shows a gap.

What do Google's AI features run on?

Google's AI features run on the same Search index and ranking systems as its classic results. Google says search engine optimization (SEO) best practices "continue to be relevant", because its AI features "are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems" (Google Search Central, October 2026). AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve pages from the Search index with those systems and use "query fan-out", a set of related searches that fetch more results. Google sums it up: optimizing for these features "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO".

A page qualifies when it is indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google's generative AI guide adds that the site must also be included through Search Console's generative AI control (Google Search Central, October 2026). That control reached every site by 31 August 2026 and is set to Include by default (Search Console Help, October 2026). Google's older AI features page still says there are "no additional technical requirements" (AI features and your website, October 2026). The Gemini app draws on the same index: Google describes Gemini Apps grounding as "providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time" (Google's crawler documentation, October 2026). So, by Google's own account, the signals that rank a page in Google Search are the signals that put it in Google's AI answers.

How does ChatGPT choose the pages it cites?

ChatGPT chooses pages through OpenAI's own crawler and outside search providers, and OpenAI names no individual ranking signals. A site is eligible for ChatGPT search only if it lets OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, reach it (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026). ChatGPT search also "sometimes partners with other search providers", rewriting a question into targeted queries it sends them. OpenAI says only that ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information". So, in our reading, a page that ranks in conventional search has a route into ChatGPT, but OpenAI does not say how much any signal weighs. Whether ranking work pays more on Google than on ChatGPT has its own answer.

Two of the four agents OpenAI documents fetch pages for ChatGPT's answers (OpenAI's crawler documentation, October 2026):

  • OAI-SearchBot decides eligibility for ChatGPT search; a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to apply.
  • ChatGPT-User visits a page when a user's question calls for it, and "robots.txt rules may not apply"; OpenAI says it "is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search".

The other two do other jobs: GPTBot gathers content that may train OpenAI's models, and blocking it leaves search untouched; OAI-AdsBot checks only pages submitted as ads.

Because eligibility runs through OpenAI's crawler rather than Googlebot, a migration can cut ChatGPT citations while Google rankings hold.

Which traditional SEO signals still earn budget for AI answers?

Most traditional search engine optimization (SEO) signals still earn budget, because they reach AI answers through ranking and crawl access rather than through any AI-specific file.

Six of seven signals still carry weight for AI answers; only llms.txt does not, for Google
SignalStill load-bearing for AI answersWhy
Title tagYes, indirectlyIt works through ordinary ranking and the click; Google's AI guide gives it no separate role
Backlinks and authorityYes, indirectlyGoogle's link analysis systems, PageRank included, remain part of the core ranking its AI features rest on
Product and Article schemaYes, for product surfacesGoogle: not required for AI features, but structured data plus a Merchant Center feed "maximizes your eligibility"
Crawlability and renderYes, hard requirementGoogle needs an indexed, snippet-eligible page; ChatGPT needs access for OpenAI's search crawler
Page speedWeakly, through rankingGoogle lists page experience, including reduced latency, among practices that stay worthwhile
llms.txtNo, for GoogleGoogle Search ignores llms.txt files; Shopify serves one on every store anyway
Answer stated near its questionYes, in Deploi's viewGoogle says no chunking is needed because its systems find the relevant piece of a page

What actually changes when an AI engine answers instead of a results page?

The unit changes: Google's AI answers show the relevant piece of a page, not the whole page. Google says there is "no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces", because its systems "understand the nuance of multiple topics on a page and show the relevant piece to users" (Google Search Central, October 2026). In our judgment, that leaves two jobs for a $20M to $500M merchant.

First, state the answer plainly near the question it answers. Google says its systems find the relevant piece on their own, but OpenAI publishes nothing on how ChatGPT picks one, so a plain answer is the cheaper bet across engines. How one product page can serve ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini covers the format.

Second, make product data complete in markup, not just in the admin. Shopify's structured_data Liquid filter covers only the product and article objects (Shopify developer docs, October 2026), so Organization, BreadcrumbList and review markup are theme work. Deploi's structured data decision record scores that work BUILD for any store with a developer, and whether it needs a paid schema audit has its own answer. In our judgment, a replatform that drops theme markup does more damage than the move itself, which is why a site's migration history matters less than what the migration broke.

Where does product discovery bypass content SEO?

Product discovery bypasses content search engine optimization (SEO) wherever an AI channel reads a product feed instead of your pages. On Shopify, a feed is the main route for every AI channel the agentic storefronts sell through, though Shopify lists "other methods such as web crawling and indexing" as well (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify Catalog, the product feed Shopify shares with AI channels, sends ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot each product's "title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes" (Shopify's Catalog page, October 2026). Product discovery for Google AI Mode and Gemini "is powered by Google Merchant Center", filled by the Google & YouTube channel, a third-party feed provider or a manual upload (Shopify's Google page, October 2026).

The feed is not the whole story in ChatGPT. When it picks products, ChatGPT considers "Structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers" and "other third-party content", and its review summaries are "based on reviews from public websites" (OpenAI's shopping help, October 2026). So, in our reading, the feed supplies the product facts, while reviews and other sites shape how ChatGPT describes the product. Whether that makes AI search its own channel has its own answer.

When is AI-specific spending the wrong move?

AI-specific spending is the wrong move whenever it buys something no engine sells or something your store already has.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
The category says AI search is a new discipline requiring new artifacts. Google says in writing that it is not, and we agree with Google here. The honest new work is narrow, specific and mostly editorial, and vendors who cannot sell editorial work have an incentive to describe it as infrastructure.
What we look at first
the pages that answer your highest-intent questions. Teams arrive with a list of AI-specific tactics and leave with a content restructuring project, because in our judgment the usual problem is not a missing file but an answer buried under a scroll of brand preamble.

When this answer changes

  • Google rewrites its generative AI guide, or the Search generative AI control in Search Console stops defaulting to Include.
  • OpenAI names the search providers ChatGPT search partners with, or publishes how it ranks results.
  • Google Search starts reading llms.txt or another AI-specific file.
  • Shopify moves Google AI Mode and Gemini onto Shopify Catalog, or moves ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot off it.
  • An engine starts selling citations, or placement in its answer text beyond labelled ads.
