Does a migration to Shopify ever cause a temporary drop in AI-answer-engine citation share even if traditional Google rankings hold steady?
Short answer
Yes: a Shopify migration can cut AI citation share while Google rankings hold, because ChatGPT search reaches sites through OpenAI's crawler and partner search providers, not Googlebot (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026). Engines keep citing old URLs until they recrawl, and Google says its recrawl "can take anywhere from several days to several months" (Google Search Central, October 2026).

Deploi’s call
Yes, it happens, and the cause is almost never the migration itself. It is the redirect map treated as a search engine optimization (SEO) chore rather than as the thing that keeps every existing citation pointing somewhere real. Build the redirect map from the cited-URL list first and the traffic report second.
CustomizeBaseline AI citations before the cutover when
- Buyers ask AI engines the questions your pages answer. A fixed prompt panel, the measurement Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record recommends, is the only before-and-after view of your ChatGPT citations.
- Your cited URLs will change, because Shopify's link structure "is likely different from your previous service" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Your old pages appear in AI Overviews: Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows which ones by page (Search Console Help, October 2026).
WaitHold off on a recovery fix while
- The drop is a few weeks old: Google warns of ranking fluctuations "while Google recrawls and reindexes your site" (Google Search Central, October 2026).
- A vendor promises your citations back by a date: the only published medians we found cover 38 software and tech migrations, not Shopify stores (MaxAEO, August 2026).

Why can AI citations drop while Google rankings hold?
AI citations can drop while Google rankings hold because the two run on different systems with different clocks. Google's AI features retrieve pages from its Search index with its core ranking systems (Google Search Central, October 2026). So, in our reading, an AI Overviews citation usually moves with the ranking. Which traditional search signals AI answer engines still use has its own answer. ChatGPT is different. A site is eligible for ChatGPT search only when OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, can reach it, and ChatGPT search also "sometimes partners with other search providers" (OpenAI Help Center, October 2026). OpenAI's crawler page lists no crawl schedule (OpenAI, October 2026).
That is the structural reason a dashboard can show Google rankings flat and ChatGPT citations down in the same month. Nothing is wrong with either number.
Which AI surfaces recover fastest after a migration?
Live fetches recover first and trained models last, because each surface refreshes on its own clock and only some of them follow your redirects at answer time.
| Surface | What it reads | Recovery after a migration |
|---|---|---|
| Live fetch | ChatGPT-User visiting a page when a user's question calls for it | Immediate once the redirect works; a broken redirect fails at once |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's Search index and core ranking systems | Follows Google's recrawl, which can take several days to several months |
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI's search crawler plus partner search providers | Its own cycle; OpenAI publishes no crawl schedule |
| Model training data | GPTBot content that may train future OpenAI models | Slowest; no redirect changes what a model already learned |
Which migration failure costs the most AI citations?
A broken redirect costs the most, because an engine holding a citation to oldsite.com/guides/sizing follows that URL when a user clicks or when ChatGPT-User fetches it live. In our reading, a 404 there reads as a dead source and a clean 301 to the equivalent Shopify URL reads as a moved source. Unlike a recrawl, the redirect is entirely within your control.
Shopify warns that its "link structure for individual pages is likely different from your previous service" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify calls /products and /collections "fixed Shopify paths", and a store can hold 100,000 redirects, or 20,000,000 on Plus (Shopify's redirect page, October 2026). So every cited legacy path needs a mapped redirect, not a catch-all to the homepage. Google says redirecting many old URLs to the home page "might be treated as a soft 404 error", that is, like a missing page (Google Search Central, October 2026). Deploi's redirects decision record scores redirect apps WAIT because native redirects with bulk import cover a migration, so the map matters more than any app.
What should you measure and check around the cutover?
Measure prompts and cited URLs before the cutover and check access and redirects around it, because a drop is invisible without a baseline.
- Baseline the prompts, not the keywords. Run the twenty questions your buyers actually ask across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and record which URLs get cited, two weeks before cutover. It is a pared-down baseline; the prompt panel Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record recommends runs 50 to 150 buyer prompts weekly.
- Export Search Console's Generative AI performance report. It shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page, grouped by "the final URL linked by a generative AI feature after any redirects" (Search Console Help, October 2026).
- Export the cited URL list. That list is your redirect priority order, above analytics traffic rank.
- Verify the new robots.txt permits OAI-SearchBot and the other AI crawlers you intend to allow. OpenAI says a change "can take ~24 hours" to reach ChatGPT search results (OpenAI, October 2026). Google-Extended, Google's token for Gemini training and grounding, does not affect "a site's inclusion in Google Search" (Google's crawler documentation, October 2026).
- Re-run the same prompt set at week two, week six and week twelve. A single post-launch reading is noise.
- Keep the redirects "for as long as possible, generally at least 1 year", as Google advises (Google Search Central, October 2026).
Is there a published recovery curve for AI citations after a migration?
No engine publishes a recovery curve for AI citations after a migration, and the only published figures we found come from one vendor's tracked migrations. MaxAEO, which sells AI-visibility tracking, followed 38 site migrations by business software and tech brands from late 2025 to mid-2026 (MaxAEO, August 2026). In that sample, ChatGPT cited the new URL after a median of 12 days and dropped the old one after 34. Full consolidation across the eight surfaces it tracks took a median of 41 days. Those are business software and tech brands tracked on the vendor's own platform, not Shopify stores, so treat them as a range to test your baseline against, not a forecast. Google's own estimate is that a medium-sized site's new URLs replace the old ones over "a few weeks or more" (Google Search Central, October 2026). So any vendor who promises your citations back by a date is quoting a figure nobody has measured for your store.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- Most migration checklists treat AI visibility as a post-launch monitoring item. It is a pre-launch measurement item. You cannot detect a drop against a baseline you never took.
- How long we tell clients to budget
- one quarter for AI citations to settle after a migration. That is our judgment, not a published figure: Google's recrawl window runs from several days to several months, and the one vendor study we found put full consolidation at a median of 41 days, with a long tail.
- What we tell clients to do first
- take a prompt baseline two weeks before cutover. In our judgment, pre-migration prompt baselines are still rare, and teams that skip them cannot tell a real citation loss from a month of normal variance, so the post-launch conversation becomes an argument rather than a diagnosis.
- What this page adds
- that Google rankings and ChatGPT citations run through separate crawlers on separate clocks, that the cited-URL export is the redirect priority list, and what the one published set of recovery figures does and does not show.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- OpenAI publishes a crawl schedule for OAI-SearchBot, or names the search providers ChatGPT search partners with.
- Google changes how Search Console's Generative AI performance report assigns impressions after redirects.
- An engine or an independent study publishes citation-recovery data for Shopify migrations.
- Shopify changes its fixed URL paths or its redirect limits (100,000, or 20,000,000 on Plus).
- Google shortens or drops its advice to keep redirects for at least a year.

This follows from Do AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Gemini still use traditional SEO signals (meta titles, schema, backlinks), or do they rely on something else entirely?
- What's the honest answer on whether AI Overviews and AI answer engines even care about a site's migration history, or only about current content quality?
No: AI Overviews and AI answer engines carry no documented migration-history signal.
- Does the specific ChatGPT model version a customer is using change whether we show up, and should that affect our playbook?
Yes: ChatGPT now gives shoppers different models by plan, so two shoppers asking the same question can see different brands.
