App Strategy & Management

Is chasing every new 'AI-powered' app feature actually improving our stack, or mostly adding more unproven bloat?

Short answer

Chasing every new AI-powered app feature mostly adds unproven bloat, not value, because AI-labeled Shopify apps are outrunning the evidence behind them. In August 2026, 20.7% of live Shopify apps mentioned AI, which the tracker calls a proxy for "marketed as AI" (AppstorePulse, October 2026). So keep only features that move one metric you can read in 60 days.

Deploi’s call

Chasing the AI label adds bloat, because the label isn't the variable: injection path, meaning how a feature's code reaches the page, and measurability are. We treat an AI recommendation embed exactly as we treat a review widget, because the page doesn't care what the script is thinking about.

CustomizeInstall an AI feature when

  • It runs admin-side, such as description drafting, so it adds no storefront script.
  • One metric and its owner are named before install, and your own analytics reads it.
  • It passes the review Deploi's script governance record puts in front of every new tag, which asks who owns it and what it costs in bytes (October 2026).
  • On the Grow plan or higher, it can run as a Rollouts Experiment, Shopify's split test, against your live theme (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

WaitHold it while

  • It must run before the page renders, such as personalized recommendations, and you can't test it alone for two months.
  • The vendor can't say what changed when the feature became AI.
  • Your field data already misses a good threshold at the 75th percentile (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

How fast is the AI label spreading across Shopify apps?

The AI label now covers one in five live Shopify apps, and new launches no longer use it more than the catalog does. At the end of August 2026, 20.7% of 27,700 live apps mentioned AI, and so did 21.6% of the 1,854 apps launched that month (AppstorePulse, October 2026). New launches mentioned AI at 1.33 times the catalog's rate in June and at 1.04 times in August. Even PageFly, a page builder app in the top 10 by reviews, renamed itself "PageFly ✦ AI Page Builder" in August (AppstorePulse, October 2026).

Those numbers describe positioning, not capability. AppstorePulse, an App Store tracker, counts the word AI in an app's name, tagline or description. It calls that count "a proxy for marketed as AI, not for what the app technically does". Only 1,693 apps, 6.1% of the catalog, carry Shopify's Built for Shopify quality badge (AppstorePulse, October 2026). So every AI widget that renders on your storefront still adds to app bloat, which has no published conversion cost per second.

Which AI features add storefront weight, and which don't?

AI features add storefront weight only when they run on the shopper's page, so sort every AI claim into one of three buckets before you weigh it.

Three kinds of AI app feature and what each costs your storefront
BucketWhat it looks likeWhat it costs the storefront
Admin-side automationDescription drafting, bulk tagging, forecastingNo storefront script; the risk is output quality
Storefront inferencePersonalized recommendations, dynamic merchandising, AI searchA script that must run before it can decide; the heaviest bucket
Relabeled existing logicA rules engine or sorting rule renamed AIWhatever it always weighed; ask why the price changed
Deploi's sorting rule, not a Shopify or vendor category.

In our judgment, the third bucket produces most of the unproven bloat, and it's the easiest to test. Ask the vendor what the feature did before it was called AI, and what changed in the model, the data or how it runs. The second bucket costs the most: Hyperspeed, which sells a speed app, ranks upsell and personalization engines among the heaviest contributors to main-thread blocking (Hyperspeed, October 2026). That is the browser work that delays a page's response, so a personalization embed slows the page it's meant to sell on. Whether AI recommendations lift order value is its own question.

How do you test an AI app feature before it stays?

You test an AI app feature by naming one metric, holding everything else still, and reading both the gain and the speed cost after 60 days.

  1. Name the metric before you install. Attach rate, average order value, search exit rate, tickets deflected or merchandising hours saved: one metric, owned by a person.
  2. Record the baseline from your own systems, never the vendor's dashboard, which is scored by the party being tested.
  3. Record the speed baseline too. Shopify's web performance report summarizes the past 30 days of real-user data at the 75th percentile (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  4. Install one thing. The report marks installs as potential changes rather than naming a culprit, so overlapping installs make the result unreadable.
  5. Split the traffic if you can. On the Grow plan or higher, a Rollouts Experiment, Shopify's split test, runs the theme with the feature against your live theme, 50/50 by default (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Its results compare conversion for each side, not speed (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  6. Hold it 60 days, then read both columns. Sixty days lets Shopify's 30-day summary cover a full month with the feature settled. Under a split, that summary still covers the whole store, so it understates the feature's speed cost.
  7. Uninstall properly if it fails. Some apps leave theme code "that isn't automatically removed" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

When is the 60-day test overkill?

The 60-day test is overkill for admin-side AI, because a tool with no storefront script has no speed cost to measure. The test exists to weigh an AI feature's gain on one metric against the speed it costs your storefront. A drafting tool that saves a merchandiser six hours a week pays back in a timesheet. So approve it on a manager's judgment, and keep the test for anything that renders.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
The prevailing advice is to evaluate AI apps on model quality. We think model quality is unfalsifiable from the outside and the wrong first filter. Evaluate on whether you can read the result in your own analytics inside 60 days. A feature you cannot measure is a feature you cannot defend when it is time to cut the bill.
Where we look first
In our judgment, the embeds that cost most are the ones that must run before they can render, and AI personalization sits in that group. An AI version of a widget isn't lighter by default, so weigh it like any other script.
What this page adds
The parent explains why no conversion price per second exists for app bloat. This page applies that to AI features: how far the AI label has spread across the App Store by August 2026, the three buckets AI claims fall into, and a 60-day test that reads the gain and the speed cost on your own data.

When this answer changes

  • AppstorePulse publishes a newer monthly report, or AI's share of launches pulls away from the catalog again.
  • Shopify changes the Built for Shopify storefront speed bar.
  • Shopify changes the plan gate or the metrics for Rollouts Experiments.
  • Shopify changes which admin AI features, Sidekick included, cost nothing extra or vary by plan.
