App Strategy & Management

How much does app bloat actually cost a mid-market Shopify store in lost conversion rate per extra second of load time?

No published figure exists. Here is the honest answer

App bloat has no published cost per second, so each Shopify store must measure its own. The cited 8.4% conversion lift is a late-2019 retail finding for a 0.1 second gain in each of four lab speed metrics (Deloitte, October 2026). Shopify's web performance report tracks real-user speed and marks app installs as potential causes (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Deploi’s call

No published conversion-per-second figure fits your store, so don't buy one, and don't scope a cleanup around app count. What predicts your load time is the bytes and browser processing time each script adds. The fix is a budget per script that stops a release when a script breaks it. We scored third-party script governance CUSTOMIZE for exactly that reason: buy the monitoring, build the gate (Deploi verdict, September 2026).

CustomizeBuy the monitoring and build the gate when

  • More than one team can publish scripts or tags without a developer's review.
  • 25 or more third-party scripts run through a tag manager, a customer data platform (CDP) and app code, the profile Deploi's script governance record scores CUSTOMIZE (October 2026).
  • A speed app is the alternative. Deploi's performance monitoring record scores the audit program BUILD instead, because optimizer apps add their own scripts (October 2026).

WaitHold off while

  • Fewer than 10 third-party scripts run and one person owns the theme, the profile Deploi's script governance record scores WAIT (October 2026).
  • All three Core Web Vitals, Google's page speed metrics, already score good at the 75th percentile (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • A theme rebuild or replatform lands within two quarters and will reset every script anyway.

Basis: Build or Buy Third-Party Script Governance on Shopify?, our Build vs. Buy decision record, scored CUSTOMIZE.

Why is there no reliable conversion cost per second for app bloat?

There is no reliable conversion cost per second for app bloat, because the study everyone quotes measured something else. That study is Deloitte's Milliseconds Make Millions report, commissioned by Google. In its retail sample, conversions rose 8.4% and order value 9.2% when four lab speed metrics each improved by 0.1 seconds (Deloitte, October 2026). The sample was 15 retail brands and 20.5 million mobile sessions, from 28 October to 24 November 2019.

Four limits stop that 8.4% from transferring to your store:

  • It's a correlation. Speed varied naturally on each site and no site was redesigned during the study, so it never tested what removing an app does (Deloitte; web.dev, October 2026).
  • Every page had to improve. Google's summary says each metric had to gain 0.1 seconds on every page of the journey (web.dev, October 2026).
  • Only significant results count. The report keeps statistically significant results for each brand, leaves out the rest, and says Deloitte didn't audit the data (Deloitte, October 2026).
  • One of the four metrics is retired. Google's summary notes that First Meaningful Paint is deprecated in favor of Largest Contentful Paint (web.dev, October 2026).

Where do an app's extra seconds of load time come from?

An app's extra seconds reach your storefront through one of four doors, and the door sets the cost.

Four ways third-party code reaches a Shopify storefront, and Shopify's rule for each
DoorWhat it does to load timeShopify's rule in October 2026
App embed block, switched on in the theme editorCan load scripts only on pages that need themPart of theme app extensions, required for App Store apps that change a theme

Shopify tells app developers to "use app embed blocks to take advantage of their ability to only load scripts on specific pages" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). So an app that loads on every page anyway costs you seconds by choice. Hyperspeed, which sells a speed app, names analytics, chat, upsell and session-recording tools as the heaviest categories (Hyperspeed, October 2026). Recommendation and personalization engines sit in its upsell group, which is why every AI feature that renders needs a 60-day test.

Why doesn't Shopify's 10-point app speed rule protect the whole store?

Shopify's 10-point rule doesn't protect the whole store, because it measures one app at a time. To be published in the App Store, an app "must not reduce storefront Lighthouse performance scores by more than 10 points" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Lighthouse is Google's lab speed test. Shopify compares the score before and after the app's install across home (17%), product (40%) and collection (43%) pages. Its test steps start from a theme "without your app or any other apps installed" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).

So ten compliant apps are ten separate allowances, each measured alone, sharing one browser. Shopify's Built for Shopify badge keeps the same 10-point storefront bar and adds admin and checkout criteria (Shopify developer docs, October 2026), so it isn't a stricter storefront test.

What shoppers feel is field data, and a stack of compliant apps can still miss Shopify's good thresholds: 2,500 ms Largest Contentful Paint, 200 ms Interaction to Next Paint and 0.1 Cumulative Layout Shift (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). How many apps a store can carry turns that into a count, and Deploi's app-stack record scores consolidation CUSTOMIZE past roughly 10 apps (October 2026).

How can a store put its own conversion number on an app?

A store can put its own conversion number on an app by testing its theme with and without that app, because Shopify's speed report can't isolate one. The web performance report summarizes the past 30 days of real-user data, keeps 90 days, and marks app installs as potential changes (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The report shows that speed moved, not which app moved it.

On the Grow plan or higher, Shopify's Rollouts tool can run that comparison as an Experiment, a split test (Shopify Help Center, October 2026):

  1. Duplicate the live theme and switch off one app's embed in the copy, because an app embed is enabled per theme (Shopify developer docs, October 2026).
  2. Run the copy as the treatment against your live theme. A new Experiment splits traffic 50/50 and ends after 90 days by default (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  3. Compare conversion rate, add to cart rate and reached checkout rate for each side (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

The result prices the app: its speed cost netted against whatever it sells. The test covers only apps that load through an embed, and rollouts don't run on vintage themes (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Everything else needs manual attribution: see what a paid app-stack audit should deliver and whether to hire that work out.

When doesn't removing an app buy back its seconds?

Removing an app doesn't buy back its seconds when its code outlives it, when the weight sits elsewhere, or when speed isn't your bottleneck.

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
The category treats app count as the metric and speed apps as the fix. Both are wrong in the same direction. An optimizer widget adds its own script to the page it scores, and a speed score is not a speed fix while the findings sit unimplemented. Our performance monitoring verdict is BUILD the audit-and-remediation program, because measurement is already free (Deploi verdict, August 2026).
Where we look first
In our judgment, start with the few embeds that must run before a shopper can act: review widgets on the product page, chat launchers and personalization. The long tail of small apps matters less than the app-count story suggests, so removing eleven small apps while the review widget stays changes little.

When this answer changes

  • Shopify adds per-app or per-script attribution to the web performance report.
  • Shopify changes the 10-point Lighthouse bar or the page weights in its app speed test.
  • Shopify moves the 1 March 2027 date for script tags on storefronts.
  • Google changes a Core Web Vitals metric or its good thresholds.
  • A new study measures the conversion effect of removing apps rather than of general speed.
  • Shopify changes the plan gate or the metrics for Rollouts Experiments.
