Are there merchant-of-record providers besides Global-e and Flow Commerce that integrate with Shopify?
Merchant-of-record providers beyond Global-e do integrate with Shopify. Reach, ESW and Zonos all run MoR models on the platform. ESW's Shopify app launched 5 September 2025 and carries 0 reviews; Zonos states it acts as MoR for United States domestic transactions through Zonos Checkout (verified September 2026). Shopify lists simultaneous use of the Global-e app as unsupported alongside Managed Markets.
The landscape, with what each one actually claims
Every entry below was checked live in September 2026. Where a provider does not publish something, this page says so rather than filling the gap.
| Provider | MoR claim | Shopify presence (verified Sep 2026) | Published pricing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global-e | Merchant of record for Managed Markets, and "the exclusive provider of MoR services for the Shopify branded solution" under a three-year agreement signed 14 May 2025 | Native (Managed Markets) plus a Global-e CrossBorder app: 4.5 stars, 7 reviews, free to install, listed 21 October 2021 | Via Shopify: 3.25% Plus / 3.5% other plans, 1.5% FX. Direct: not published |
| Reach | Markets itself as merchant of record; describes turning "cross-border payments into domestic payments through a global entity structure" and says it is "fully embedded within Shopify" | Integration page names "Multi Store & Shopify Plus" | None published. Contact sales |
| ESW | App listing describes "Flexible business models incl. Merchant of Record for duties, taxes, compliance" | ESW International app, free, launched 5 September 2025, 0.0 stars across 0 reviews | None published |
| Zonos | MoR for United States domestic transactions through Zonos Checkout: "As the MoR for your U.S. domestic transactions, Zonos takes on the full legal responsibility for... sales tax compliance." Zonos's public documentation does not make an equivalent MoR statement for international orders | Shopify integration, landed cost and Checkout | Not readable on the pricing page at the time of checking |
| Passport | The Shopify listing does not use the phrase "merchant of record" or "importer of record" | Passport Shipping, 4.4 stars, 35 reviews, "Free to install. Additional charges may apply," listed 25 August 2022 | Weight and destination based, billed in USD |
Read the table for what it does not say
Two things stand out and neither is in a vendor deck.
First, MoR is not a single product. Zonos's published MoR position is scoped to United States domestic sales tax through its own checkout. That is a real MoR service and it is not the same service as taking on your VAT liability in Germany. A shortlist that puts "Zonos" and "Global-e" in the same MoR column without that scope note is comparing different things.
Second, an app listing is not evidence of scale. ESW is a large cross-border business, and its Shopify app carries zero reviews because it launched in September 2025. A low review count on a new listing tells you the listing is new. It tells you nothing about the provider. The reverse trap is equally live: the Global-e CrossBorder app has 7 reviews and Global-e underwrites Shopify's own branded MoR service.
What to compare on, instead of star ratings
- Which entity signs. Name the legal entity that becomes seller of record. If a provider will not put it in writing before contract, that is the answer.
- Destination coverage against your top five markets, not against a headline country count.
- Return and duty-refund treatment. Managed Markets does not refund duties, customs fees or VAT after fulfillment (per Shopify, September 2026). Ask every provider the same question and write down the answer.
- Who the customer contacts. On Managed Markets, "all Managed Markets questions go to Shopify Support, regardless of the role that Global-e plays in the service." Ask each alternative where an escalation goes and what the response commitment is.
- Exit. Managed Markets can be terminated from the Shopify admin, with a 30-day cure period for material breach either way (per Global-e Managed Markets merchant terms, September 2026). Negotiated contracts rarely match that.
When NOT to shop the alternatives
- When you are eligible for Managed Markets and your catalogue clears the restricted list. The published percentage, the admin-level exit and the Shopify support path are worth real money against a negotiated contract you have to lawyer.
- When the reason for shopping is the 3.25% fee alone. Nobody else publishes a rate, so you will not learn whether you are getting a better one until you are in procurement.
- When you need a yes this quarter. Every alternative here is a sales conversation, not a settings page.
Provider claims on this page are quoted from each company's own published material as of September 2026 and are not independently audited. Merchant-of-record arrangements carry tax and legal consequences; take contract terms to counsel.
The Deploi point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.
- Our take: The real shortlist beyond Managed Markets is Reach, ESW and self-registration, with Zonos in a different column because its published MoR scope is United States domestic rather than cross-border. Flow does not belong on the list at all; it is Global-e.
- What we’ve seen: Cross-border shortlists get assembled from comparison blog posts, which is how Flow survives on them four years after the acquisition and how Zonos gets filed as a general MoR. Building the shortlist from each vendor's own terms page takes an afternoon and changes the list.
- Where we disagree: Comparison content ranks these providers on star ratings and country counts. Both are close to meaningless here. A new listing has no reviews and a country count is a marketing number. The variables that decide the project are which entity signs, how duties are treated on returns, and where an escalation goes at 6pm on a Friday.
- What this page adds: the live per-provider verification, including ESW's 5 September 2025 launch with zero reviews and Passport's listing not using MoR language at all; that Zonos's published MoR claim is scoped to United States domestic transactions; and a comparison rubric built on contracting entity, duty-refund treatment, escalation path and exit rather than ratings.
