Subscriptions

Should we bundle subscriptions with our new B2B wholesale channel, and does any Shopify subscription app support company-level recurring orders?

Short answer

No subscription app can sell subscriptions on Shopify's business-to-business (B2B) channel: Shopify lists Subscriptions as incompatible with B2B (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Standing-order apps fill the gap: Orumio, with no reviews yet, drafts a company location's standing order on each due date and "never takes payment" (Shopify App Store, October 2026). So keep subscriptions for retail buyers.

Deploi’s call

Keep subscriptions out of the wholesale channel: Shopify blocks them on business-to-business (B2B) orders, and standing wholesale orders run better as scheduled draft orders on payment terms. "B2B subscriptions on Shopify" is a requirement that should be rewritten before it is scoped. What the business wants is predictable reorders; what the platform blocks is recurring billing on the B2B channel. Those are different problems, and the first one has a native answer.

WaitRun wholesale reorders on native B2B while

  • Buyers reorder against stock and budget, not a calendar. Easy reorders and the quick order list run on every plan with B2B (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Payment terms carry the billing: net 7 to net 90, due on fulfillment or a fixed date (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Your wholesale needs fit 3 catalogs and standard net terms, which our B2B apps record scores WAIT: adopt native first (October 2026).

CustomizeAdd scheduled draft orders when

  • A few accounts reorder the same basket on a fixed rhythm: standing-order apps draft those orders for $0 to $29 a month (OrderCadence and Orumio listings, October 2026).
  • Collection should run itself: Shopify Flow can charge a vaulted card, or a US vaulted bank account, when a payment schedule is due, on Shopify Payments (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Bespoke items, negotiated pricing or staged approval make the ordering flow your product, which our draft-order custom flows record scores BUILD (October 2026).

Basis: Do You Still Need a B2B App Now That Shopify Does B2B Natively?, our Build vs. Buy decision record, scored WAIT.

Can a Shopify subscription app run recurring orders for B2B companies?

No Shopify subscription app can run recurring orders for business-to-business (B2B) companies, because Shopify blocks subscriptions on B2B at the platform level. Shopify's B2B requirements page lists Subscriptions among the features that aren't compatible with B2B, next to accelerated checkouts and local delivery (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify's developer docs add that "B2B doesn't support purchase options, such as subscriptions, pre-orders, and try before you buy" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). So the block covers Shopify's free Subscriptions app and the paid platforms alike, because all of them sell through purchase options. Recharge's own compatibility page lists "Shopify's B2B wholesale" among its incompatible features (Recharge Help Center, October 2026). Draft orders are blocked too: "Subscriptions can't be used with draft orders" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), and draft orders are how merchants send company contacts orders "for approval and invoicing" (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Treat any vendor claim of B2B subscriptions as a claim about a workaround, and ask which of those rules it avoids.

What does Shopify B2B give you for repeat wholesale orders?

Shopify's business-to-business (B2B) features give you buyer-led reorders and payment terms on every plan, and in our judgment that covers what most wholesale briefs mean by "subscription". Core B2B has run on Basic, Grow and Advanced since 2 April 2026, at no extra cost (Shopify Changelog, October 2026). Shopify's plan table marks these on all four plans (Shopify Help Center, October 2026):

  • Easy reorders, where a Buy Again button duplicates a past order (Shopify Changelog, January 2023), and the quick order list
  • Net terms, draft order to invoice, vaulted credit cards and payment reminders
  • Shopify Flow automations that use company and location data

Payment terms run net 7 to net 90, due on fulfillment or on a fixed date, and "Payments aren't automatically captured when the payment terms expire" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). How net terms run from invoice to payment covers the collection side. Shopify Plus adds deposits, partial payments, payment requests per fulfillment and unlimited catalogs, while Basic, Grow and Advanced get 3 catalogs across all B2B markets (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So if your wholesale terms need deposits, that's a Plus conversation whatever you decide about recurring orders.

Which apps schedule recurring orders for B2B companies?

Standing-order apps schedule recurring orders for business-to-business (B2B) companies as draft orders, not as subscriptions. The two we found launched in August and September 2026 and had no reviews in October 2026:

  • Orumio Standing Orders, $29 a month: drafts a company location's order on each daily, weekly or monthly due date, with that location's catalog and payment terms, and "never takes payment" (Shopify App Store, October 2026).
  • OrderCadence, free for one schedule or $19 a month for unlimited: schedules weekly, every-two-week or recurring B2B draft orders for staff to review (Shopify App Store, October 2026).

Billing stays on payment terms, so automate collection, not a calendar charge. Shopify Flow's Charge vaulted payment for B2B order action charges a vaulted card when a payment schedule is due, and it requires Shopify Payments. It debits a vaulted bank account only when you and the buyer are both in the United States (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

So pilot either app, and the Flow charge, on one account first. Map a legacy replenishment schedule you're migrating to these drafts too.

Should a new wholesale channel take on subscriptions at all?

A new wholesale channel shouldn't take on subscriptions, in our judgment, because a wholesale buyer reorders against inventory and budget cycles, not a calendar. A fixed recurring charge against a company account also creates a credit and returns problem your direct-to-consumer (D2C) program never had. A blended store serves business-to-business (B2B) and D2C customers on one Shopify store (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so running both programs is normal; folding subscriptions into the wholesale channel is what breaks. Keep the D2C subscription program with retail customers, and choose its platform on retention needs, as our product subscriptions record does (October 2026). Launch the B2B channel first, then decide whether a standing order is still needed.

When is a custom recurring-order build the wrong move?

A custom recurring-order build is the wrong move while native reorders, a reminder or a standing-order app cover the wholesale shape.

Build only when bespoke items, negotiated pricing or staged approval make the ordering flow part of how you sell. Our draft-order custom flows record scores that case BUILD on Shopify's native draft order rails, and the record's illustrative estimate is 4 to 10 weeks to a scoped first version (October 2026).

Deploi’s point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Where we disagree
Wholesale-app marketing implies recurring B2B billing is a configuration away. Shopify's own compatibility list says otherwise, and we would rather tell you that in discovery than in week six.
How we scope it
We scope the B2B channel launch first and the standing order second. In our judgment a requirement that combines a new channel with a new commercial model fails on the channel, not the model, and the standing order can turn out to be a reminder workflow.
What this page adds
The parent notes that Subscriptions aren't compatible with B2B. This page shows why no subscription app gets around that, which standing-order apps now draft company-level orders on a schedule, and how payment terms and Shopify Flow carry the billing instead.

When this answer changes

  • Shopify makes Subscriptions or other purchase options compatible with B2B.
  • Shopify adds native standing or scheduled draft orders for company locations.
  • Orumio Standing Orders or OrderCadence gathers reviews, changes its price, or starts taking payment.
  • Shopify starts capturing B2B payments automatically when payment terms expire.
  • Shopify moves deposits or partial payments below Plus, or changes the 3-catalog allowance.
