Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout even still live for Shopify merchants, given reports it was quietly pulled in March 2026?
Short answer
ChatGPT Instant Checkout, OpenAI's in-chat payment flow, is not live for Shopify merchants. In March 2026 OpenAI began letting merchants "use their own checkout experiences" (openai.com, March 2026). So Shopify's ChatGPT channel, which is live, sends buyers to your own checkout in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab, with no fee beyond payment processing (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Deploi’s call
ChatGPT Instant Checkout, OpenAI's in-chat payment flow, is gone for Shopify merchants, and losing it de-risks them rather than setting them back. Without in-chat payment you keep your checkout, the full customer details it collects and your attribution. Our WAIT verdict on agentic checkout, where an AI agent completes the purchase, protects exactly that (Deploi verdict, September 2026).
WaitBuild nothing for ChatGPT checkout while
- Shopify's ChatGPT channel already ends each sale on your own checkout with no fee beyond payment processing (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- OpenAI still describes ChatGPT apps as optional and best suited to larger merchants (chatgpt.com/merchants, October 2026).
- Your ChatGPT orders are still too few in your Shopify admin to justify a dedicated build.
- A vendor is pitching an AI checkout integration or a ChatGPT app on an annual contract.
CustomizeFix the catalog and policies now when
- Any of the three required policies (terms of service, privacy policy, return and refund policy) is incomplete in your admin.
- Products lack categories and attributes in Shopify Catalog, the product feed Shopify shares with AI channels; Deploi's readiness decision record scores that work CUSTOMIZE.
- Legal disclosures sit beyond the first 6,000 characters of a product description (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Was ChatGPT Instant Checkout really pulled in March 2026?
Yes, OpenAI pulled back from ChatGPT Instant Checkout in March 2026, but on the record rather than quietly. The reports were right about the event and wrong about the conclusion: OpenAI changed where the buyer pays, not whether ChatGPT sends buyers. That split shapes the agentic commerce timeline for a $20M to $100M brand.
Instant Checkout was OpenAI's in-chat purchase flow, built so a buyer could "complete the purchase without ever leaving the chat" (OpenAI's launch post, September 2025). Shopify told Modern Retail that its pilot with OpenAI let buyers pay inside ChatGPT through Instant Checkout, powered by Shopify Payments (March 2026).
On 6 March 2026 an OpenAI spokesperson told Digital Commerce 360 that "Instant Checkout is moving to Apps." On 24 March 2026 OpenAI gave its reason in its product discovery announcement: "the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide."
How do Shopify merchants sell in ChatGPT now?
Shopify merchants sell in ChatGPT through Shopify's ChatGPT channel, which is live, active by default for eligible stores, and ends every sale on the merchant's own checkout. Shopify calls the channel "a discovery-focused referrer platform" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Shopify says ChatGPT users "complete their purchase on your online store checkout in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when customers use ChatGPT web." The same Shopify page rules out Instant Checkout, OpenAI's in-chat payment flow, for a Shopify store: there is "no option to activate or deactivate a ChatGPT direct checkout setting in your Shopify admin."
Product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, the product feed Shopify shares with AI channels such as ChatGPT. Catalog lists each product "with their title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes" (Shopify's Catalog page, October 2026). OpenAI confirms that Shopify product data "is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog" (OpenAI's shopping help, October 2026).
What changed for a Shopify merchant when checkout left ChatGPT?
Losing Instant Checkout, OpenAI's in-chat payment flow, handed the transaction back to the merchant: the buyer now pays on your own checkout, and the sale carries no fee beyond standard payment processing.
| What changed | Instant Checkout at launch (September 2025) | Shopify's ChatGPT channel (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Where the buyer pays | Inside the chat, after tapping Buy | Your online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab |
| Whose checkout runs | ChatGPT's | Yours, with your customizations, branding and payment methods |
| Fee on the sale | A small fee on completed purchases | None beyond standard payment processing |
| Setup for Shopify stores | Listed as coming soon | Active by default for eligible stores |
Under Instant Checkout your checkout page never loaded, and ChatGPT passed you "only the information required to complete the order" (OpenAI's launch post, September 2025). What replaced it is a referral that lands on infrastructure you control, with each order shown in your admin "with channel or referrer attribution" (Shopify's agentic storefronts overview, October 2026). How Shopify counts that AI-channel sale depends on which report you open.
Does your store qualify for Shopify's ChatGPT channel?
Your store qualifies for Shopify's ChatGPT channel when it meets four requirements, and it can be based outside the United States (Shopify Help Center, October 2026):
- Your store sells to customers in the United States.
- Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog, the product feed Shopify shares with AI channels such as ChatGPT. Catalog leaves out business-to-business (B2B) only products and the other exclusions Shopify lists.
- You have agreed to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
- Your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy are complete in Settings > Policies.
Shopify also asks that product descriptions carry "any relevant legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters" (Shopify's ChatGPT considerations, October 2026).
Should you build a ChatGPT app to bring checkout back into the chat?
No: for a Shopify brand today, a ChatGPT app is not a route back to Instant Checkout, OpenAI's in-chat payment flow, and most Shopify brands do not need one. ChatGPT apps are merchant-built experiences that run inside ChatGPT. OpenAI calls them "optional" and "best suited for larger merchants who want more control over the shopping and purchase experience" (chatgpt.com/merchants, October 2026). Shopify told Digital Commerce 360 that "Shopify merchants do not need to build apps for ChatGPT to participate in commerce" (March 2026). Deploi's decision record on AI agents completing purchases scores the transaction WAIT: "Buy nothing and build nothing for the transaction itself."
Why do reports keep saying agentic commerce stalled?
Reports say agentic commerce stalled because they use one phrase for two things: finishing a purchase inside an AI chat, and getting products found by AI. OpenAI retreated on the first inside ChatGPT. Shopify kept the second on by default across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta (Shopify's channel list, October 2026). Shopify also runs in-chat checkout on the last three, each with no fee beyond payment processing (Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta help pages, October 2026). Where each AI channel completes the purchase is its own answer.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- The trade press treated "OpenAI pulls Instant Checkout" as evidence that agentic commerce was overhyped. The evidence actually points the other way on Shopify specifically, because Shopify runs in-chat checkout on three other surfaces, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, at no platform fee (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). One vendor's retreat from one flow is not a category verdict.
- What we tell clients to do first
- confirm the channel state in your own admin under Sales channels, then check whether the four ChatGPT requirements are actually met. We have found published policy pages to be the common failure, and it is the cheapest one to fix.
- What this page adds
- exactly which of the two things called agentic commerce changed in March 2026, what OpenAI said in its own words, and why the change left Shopify merchants with more of the transaction rather than less.

- What counts as an 'AI-channel' sale in Shopify's reporting? Does it include a customer who just researched on ChatGPT but bought later through Google?
Shopify counts an AI-channel sale two ways, and by default a ChatGPT-researched sale bought through a Google click goes to Google, because marketing reports credit the last click that is not a direct visit (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Does having a Shop app presence (not just a website) help our AI-search and AI-shopping visibility specifically?
A Shop app presence adds one AI shopping channel, and eligible stores get it automatically (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Does our checkout/cart experience matter at all for AI-search visibility, or is that entirely a separate, later-funnel concern?
No: your checkout and cart do not decide whether Shopify's AI channels show your products, because shoppers still discover them without direct checkout (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
