Does switching from Klaviyo to a Shopify-native-only email tool make sense once a brand hits Shopify Plus, or does Klaviyo stay worth it?

Shopify Messaging now sends email, SMS and WhatsApp from the admin, with 10,000 free emails a month and additional email at $1 per 1,000 up to 300,000 (Shopify Help Center, September 2026). The channel gap is closed; the data gap is not. Brands that switch give up Klaviyo's segmentation depth, flow logic and non-Shopify data sources.

What changed, and why the old answer is stale

The standard answer to this question was written when the native tool was email-only and thin. That is no longer the product. Shopify now describes Shopify Messaging as letting you "create and send email, SMS, and WhatsApp marketing campaigns directly from your Shopify admin," with "marketing automations for email and SMS" (per Shopify Help Center, September 2026).

The economics are published and they are aggressive:

ChannelPublished rate (Shopify, Sep 2026)
Email, first 10,000 per monthFree. "All stores on these plans have 10,000 free emails to send at the beginning of every month." Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus
Email, 10,001 to 300,000"$1 USD per 1,000 additional emails"
Email, above 300,000"$0.65 USD per 1,000 additional emails," then "$0.55 USD per 1,000" above 750,000
SMS, United States$0.012 USD per message, rising by country to $0.13 in Luxembourg
SMS toll-free number"$2.15 USD monthly charge... for each approved toll-free number used for SMS marketing in the United States and Canada"
Unused email allowance"Unused emails don't carry over to the following month"

For scale: a brand sending 2 million emails a month pays roughly $1,800 under that schedule. That is a real number against a mid-market Klaviyo contract, and anyone telling you the native tool is not price-competitive at volume has not read the rate card.

Worth noting on the SMS side: Klaviyo's own App Store listing shows SMS from $15 per month for up to 1,250 credits, which works out to the same $0.012 per message as Shopify's published United States rate (verified September 2026). SMS unit cost is not where these platforms differ.

So what are you actually paying Klaviyo for

Four things, and none of them are send volume.

  1. Segmentation depth. Behavioural and predictive segments built on profile-level event history, not on Shopify's customer fields.
  2. Flow logic. Conditional branching, split paths, time-based and event-based triggers with real nesting. This is the capability that produces the revenue difference between a competent program and a good one.
  3. Data beyond Shopify. Reviews, loyalty, helpdesk, subscription platform, retail POS, a second non-Shopify storefront. Klaviyo is the join point, and a Shopify-native tool is structurally not.
  4. Portability. Your lifecycle program lives outside the commerce platform. If you ever replatform, the program survives.

The honest test

Ask what your five highest-revenue flows condition on. If every condition is a Shopify field (order count, total spent, product purchased, tag), the native tool can express your program and the Klaviyo line item is buying optionality you are not using. If any of them condition on review submitted, loyalty tier, support ticket, subscription state or second-store behaviour, the native tool cannot express your program without you rebuilding the join somewhere else.

That test takes an afternoon and it answers the question better than any feature matrix.

A constraint Plus brands hit specifically

Klaviyo gates SMS and WhatsApp consent collection on Shopify checkout pages to Plus merchants; non-Plus merchants are limited to thank-you and order-status pages (per Klaviyo Help Center, September 2026). A Plus brand that switches away from Klaviyo is giving up a collection surface it just became eligible for. Verify the equivalent collection path in whatever you move to before you move, not after.

When switching genuinely makes sense

  • Single Shopify store, no second data source, flows built on order fields only. The native tool does this, cheaply.
  • A small team with no dedicated lifecycle owner. Fewer systems beats more capability when nobody has time to use the capability.
  • Post-acquisition consolidation where the acquirer runs its own lifecycle stack and the Shopify store needs a caretaker, not a program.

When NOT to switch

  • When international is live. Klaviyo's locale sync and Smart Translations are a real capability and the comparison at that point is not a rate card.
  • When you are mid-replatform. Change one thing at a time.
  • When the driver is a renewal quote. Use the quote as leverage, not as an architecture trigger.
  • When nobody has audited flow conditions. Switching a program you have not inventoried is how a brand loses a flow and finds out in the next quarterly review.

The Deploi point of view

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Separate from the facts above.

  • Our take: Shopify Messaging has closed the channel gap and the price gap. It has not closed the data gap, and the data gap is the reason to keep Klaviyo. Run the flow-condition audit before anyone builds a cost comparison, because the audit decides the question and the cost comparison only decides how loudly.
  • What we’ve seen: Switching projects that start with a rate card end badly, and switching projects that start with a flow inventory usually end with a smaller, better decision than the one originally proposed. Frequently the answer is not "switch" but "stop paying Klaviyo for 40,000 profiles who have not opened anything in two years."
  • Where we disagree: Most published guidance on this question still treats the Shopify-native option as an email-only starter tool. It sends email, SMS and WhatsApp, with 10,000 free emails a month on every plan from Basic to Plus and volume rates down to $0.55 per 1,000. Advice written against the old product will tell a single-store brand to keep paying for capability it has never used.
  • What this page adds: the full published Shopify Messaging rate card across email, SMS and toll-free numbers; that Klaviyo's own SMS credit price matches Shopify's United States rate; the four specific things a Klaviyo contract actually buys; and the flow-condition audit that settles the question in an afternoon.
