Subscriptions

Do we need multi-frequency subscription logic (weekly + monthly on the same product), and which app actually supports it well?

Short answer

Shopify Subscriptions supports weekly and monthly on one product with no paid app: one plan takes several options, each with its own delivery frequency and discount (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Two cadences pay only when consumption varies by customer, as with coffee or pet food; otherwise one cadence with skips is simpler (Deploi judgment).

Deploi’s call

You don't need a paid app for weekly and monthly on one product: Shopify Subscriptions does it for free. Multi-frequency is a merchandising decision that teams keep buying as a platform feature. Native has supported it for a while; what's missing is usually a selector that makes the choice legible.

WaitRun both cadences on Shopify Subscriptions when

  • The product sells on its own, not in a bundle, because bundles aren't compatible with Shopify Subscriptions (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Your theme supports sections and blocks, or runs Debut 15.0 or Brooklyn 17.0 and later (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Recurring shipments can go at the least expensive available method after the first delivery (Shopify's subscription considerations, October 2026).
  • Staff can absorb the occasional cadence change, which is an admin edit on the contract (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
  • Our Skio versus native record scores replenishment on standard products WAIT on the free app (October 2026).

BuyBuy a paid subscription app when

  • Weekly subscribers need shipping rates of their own. Loop lists "Subscription shipping profiles" from its $99 Starter plan and "Subscription shipping rates" on its $399 Pro plan (Loop Subscriptions pricing, October 2026).
  • Subscribers should move between cadences as an upgrade offer. Loop's Pro plan lists "Product + frequency upgrade" (Loop Subscriptions pricing, October 2026).
  • The weekly item ships inside a bundle, which Shopify Subscriptions can't run (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Can Shopify's free Subscriptions app sell weekly and monthly on one product?

Shopify's free Subscriptions app can sell weekly and monthly on one product, so two cadences don't call for a paid app. A subscription plan takes several options, and each option carries its own delivery frequency, billing day, number of orders and discount (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A product can also sit in more than one plan. Shopify's developer docs let a product join several selling plan groups, the application programming interface (API) name for plans (Shopify developer docs, October 2026). Shopify Subscriptions costs nothing to install (Shopify App Store, October 2026), and its eligibility rules cover payment gateway, theme and sales channel without naming a pricing plan (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Where the native app ends and Recharge, Skio and Loop begin is a separate answer.

How do you set up two cadences in Shopify Subscriptions?

You set up two cadences in Shopify Subscriptions by adding a second option to one plan, then showing the plan on the product page. The steps follow Shopify's plan editor (Shopify Help Center, October 2026) and its theme setup guide (Shopify Help Center, October 2026):

  1. Create the plan. Go to Apps > Subscriptions > Plans > Create plan, name it, and add the products.
  2. Set the first option. Enter a number and pick a weekly, monthly or yearly delivery interval, then pick percentage off, amount off or fixed price for the discount.
  3. Click Option to add the second cadence. Each extra option takes its own delivery frequency, billing day, number of orders and discount. In our judgment this is the step most teams miss, so they conclude native can't do it.
  4. Price the cadences differently. In our judgment, weekly at the same discount as monthly trains subscribers to over-order and then pause.
  5. Add the Subscription widget block. In an Online Store 2.0 theme, add it under Product information in the theme editor. Debut 15.0 or later and Brooklyn 17.0 or later need a code snippet plus the app embed, the theme setting that switches the widget on.
  6. Test both cadences end to end, including skip and pause from the customer account, before launch.

What do two cadences change for shipping and support?

Two cadences change shipping and support, because each recurring shipment is billed, shipped and timed on its own. Shopify's rules for subscription products set three shipping behaviors that a weekly option exposes (Shopify's subscription considerations, October 2026):

  • "After the initial delivery, recurring shipments default to the least expensive available shipping method."
  • "Recurring shipments are billed and fulfilled separately, even if they have overlapping delivery dates."
  • The delivery frequency counts ship dates and "excludes the estimated delivery window of the shipping method", so transit time comes on top of every cycle.

Shopify consolidates shipping rates for subscriptions in one cart if they share the same billing and delivery policies (Shopify developer docs, October 2026), which a weekly and a monthly option don't. Support changes too. Shopify Subscriptions customers can pause, skip or cancel and edit payment details and addresses in their account, and frequency isn't on that list (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Staff can change a contract's delivery frequency in the admin, which also changes its billing frequency (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).

Which paid apps add more around two cadences?

Loop Subscriptions and Smartrr add shipping and upgrade tools around two cadences; neither is needed for the cadences themselves. Loop lists "Offer multiple subscription options per product" and "Subscription shipping profiles" on every paid plan from its $99 Starter, and its $399 Pro plan adds "Product + frequency upgrade", "Subscription shipping rates" and "Order scheduling rules" (Loop Subscriptions pricing, October 2026). Smartrr's $99 Launch plan lists "Dedicated subscription shipping profiles" (Smartrr on the Shopify App Store, October 2026). So the paid case for a two-cadence program is shipping control and cadence upgrades, not the options. That is why our Skio versus native record scores replenishment on standard products WAIT on Shopify Subscriptions and saves BUY for gaps such as bundles (October 2026). Shopify Subscriptions' other documented gaps are listed in their own answer.

Do you actually need two cadences on one product?

You need two cadences on one product only when consumption genuinely varies by household or account size, in our judgment: coffee, pet food, supplements, cleaning refills. A second cadence costs you when it exists only because a competitor offers it, because every extra option on the selector is a decision the shopper has to make before buying. A weekly tier can also cannibalize monthly rather than add subscribers. The test is whether you can name the segment that needs weekly. If the answer is a product category rather than a customer, one cadence with a skip function is the simpler program.

Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.

Our judgment on the selector
The cadence selector decides a two-cadence program, in our judgment. Render the options in the order a shopper reasons about, weekly beside monthly with the saving stated, not in the order the API returns them.

When this answer changes

  • Shopify Subscriptions lets customers change their own delivery frequency from their account.
  • Shopify changes the default for recurring shipments away from the least expensive available method.
  • Shopify makes bundles compatible with Shopify Subscriptions.
  • Loop moves frequency upgrades or subscription shipping rates off its $399 Pro plan, or reprices Pro.
