What subscription features does Shopify's native Subscriptions app NOT cover that force an upgrade to Recharge or Skio?
Short answer
Shopify Subscriptions forces an upgrade only for bundles, which "aren't compatible" with it (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), and for retention tools such as cancellation saves (Shopify Help Center) and prepaid or gift subscriptions (Shopify Help Center). Draft orders, local payment methods and gift-card renewals stay limited on Recharge and Skio, because those limits bind every app on Shopify's checkout (Shopify Help Center).

Deploi’s call
Only two gaps in Shopify Subscriptions force an upgrade to Recharge or Skio: bundles and retention tooling. The rest of Shopify's documented limits follow you onto the paid app, because they belong to Shopify's checkout. Teams upgrade for retention tooling and then justify the upgrade with bundles.
WaitStay on Shopify Subscriptions when
- Your program is replenishment whose only recovery need is retrying failed payments, which Shopify Subscriptions does on a schedule you set (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Your blocker is draft orders, business-to-business (B2B) ordering or payment methods such as Klarna, iDEAL or Sofort, because Recharge lists all three as incompatible too (Recharge Help Center, October 2026).
- Gifting means renewals paid by gift card, which Shopify gift cards don't cover on Recharge either (Recharge Help Center, October 2026).
BuyPay for Recharge or Skio when
- Curated boxes need a bundle feature, which Recharge sells from its $499 Plus plan on a 12-month term (Recharge pricing, October 2026).
- Subscribers leave with no save step, because Shopify Subscriptions ends billing the moment they cancel (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- You want a cancel flow and a box builder on one plan; Skio's $599 plan lists both (Skio on the Shopify App Store, October 2026).

Which gaps in Shopify Subscriptions force an upgrade to Recharge or Skio?
Two gaps in Shopify Subscriptions force an upgrade to Recharge or Skio: bundles, and retention tooling such as cancellation saves and prepaid or gift subscriptions. Shopify says "Bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so a curated box can't run on the free app at all. Shopify's plan form sets a delivery frequency, a discount, a billing day and an order limit, with no prepaid or gift option (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Retention tooling appears on no compatibility list, and in our judgment it drives most upgrades.
The rest of Shopify's list is a different kind of limit. Draft orders, gift cards, payment methods and order edits sit on Shopify's considerations page for all subscription products, which also covers third-party apps (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So Recharge and Skio inherit those limits, which means paying for either one doesn't remove them. Shopify's free app against Recharge, Skio and Loop on cost covers the fee side of the same decision.
Which of Shopify's subscription limits stay after a move to Recharge or Skio?
Five of the six Shopify limits in the following table stay after a move to Recharge or Skio, because both apps sell through the same Shopify checkout. Third-party subscription apps even use the same five gateways as Shopify's own app: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen or Stripe, the last for select merchants only (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). Recharge confirms those limits on its own compatibility page (Recharge Help Center, October 2026).
| Documented limit | What Shopify says | On Recharge or Skio |
|---|---|---|
| Bundles | "Bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app" | Lifted: Recharge Plus and Skio sell their own bundles |
| Draft orders | "Subscriptions can't be used with draft orders" | Still blocked, per Recharge |
| Local and non-card payment methods | They "might not be available for subscriptions" | Still limited: Recharge lists Klarna, iDEAL and Sofort as unavailable |
| Gift cards | They apply "only to the first payment" | Still first payment only, per Recharge |
| Order edits | The order edits application programming interface (API) "doesn't support subscriptions" | Still limited: Recharge can't add a subscription to an order |
| Business-to-business (B2B) | Listed among features that "aren't compatible with B2B" | Still blocked, per Recharge |
Which retention tools does Shopify Subscriptions lack that Recharge and Skio sell?
Shopify Subscriptions lacks the save step that Recharge and Skio sell, and its payment recovery stops at retries you set. Shopify's customer page lists resume, skip, pause and cancel, plus payment method and address changes, and no cancellation offer. When a customer cancels, "billing and delivery ends immediately" (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). A failed payment retries on the number of attempts and the days between them that you set, and then the subscription skips, pauses or cancels (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). The app's analytics show four metrics (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), and Shopify's sales reports add a purchase option filter (Shopify Help Center). So the gap is a save step, which Deploi's save-desk record scores BUY rather than build (October 2026), plus tuned retries and deeper analysis.
| Retention need | Shopify Subscriptions (free) | Recharge Starter, $99 a month + 1.49% + 19¢ | Skio, $599 a month + 1% + 20¢ |
|---|---|---|---|
| A customer clicks cancel | Billing ends immediately | Smart Cancellation Prevention | Multi-step cancel flow builder |
| A card fails or expires | Retries you set, then skip, pause or cancel; automatic card updates on Shopify Payments | Failed Payment Recovery | Smart Payment Recovery |
| Boxes and bundles | Not compatible | Customizable bundles from Plus, $499 a month | Build-a-Box |
| Reporting | Four app metrics | Analytics and industry benchmarks | Real-time analytics and segmentation |
When is upgrading the wrong fix for a Shopify Subscriptions gap?
Upgrading is the wrong fix when the gap sits in Shopify's checkout rather than in Shopify Subscriptions, because Recharge and Skio sell through that same checkout. Deploi's Skio versus native record already scores replenishment on standard products WAIT on the free app (Deploi Build vs. Buy, October 2026).
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- Vendor comparisons present the native app as feature-poor. It is feature-narrow, which is different: what it does, it does on Shopify's own rails, with no exit project attached. Several of the native gaps those comparisons list are checkout limits that every subscription app shares.
- Our judgment on the bundles row
- A requirement written down as "we need bundles" is often a second variant on the product-page selector, which needs no bundle feature at all. Read the gap list against your real merchandising, not against the roadmap deck.
- What this page adds
- Which of Shopify's documented subscription limits an upgrade removes (bundles) and which follow the store onto Recharge or Skio (draft orders, local payment methods, gift-card renewals, B2B), plus the retention tools each paid plan adds.
When this answer changes
- Shopify makes bundles compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app.
- Shopify lets subscriptions run on draft orders or B2B, or widens the payment methods that can pay for them.
- Shopify adds a cancellation offer, prepaid or gift subscriptions, product swaps or cohort reporting to Shopify Subscriptions.
- Recharge or Skio moves bundles, cancellation prevention or payment recovery to a different plan, or changes its prices.
- Recharge changes its list of features that don't work with its Shopify Checkout Integration.

- What is the best Shopify app for a subscription box business specifically (vs a simple recurring-order model)?

- Should we bundle subscriptions with our new B2B wholesale channel, and does any Shopify subscription app support company-level recurring orders?
No subscription app can sell subscriptions on Shopify's business-to-business (B2B) channel: Shopify lists Subscriptions as incompatible with B2B (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
