How much organic traffic and sales are Shopify merchants actually seeing from Perplexity right now, versus ChatGPT or Gemini?
Short answer
Perplexity sends stores less traffic than ChatGPT or Gemini: 3.7% of AI visits in 2026, against 88.1% for ChatGPT and 5.1% for Gemini, across 73 stores, 42 on Shopify (Shero Commerce, September 2026). Perplexity's share is a sliver of a small channel, because AI assistants drove 0.10% of sessions and 0.12% of revenue in 10 US Shopify stores from January to August 2026 (Ethercycle, September 2026).

Deploi’s call
Perplexity sent about 4% of AI visits across a 73-store sample, against 88% for ChatGPT and 5% for Gemini (Shero Commerce, September 2026). So measure your own store against the 0.10% of sessions that AI assistants sent 10 US Shopify stores from January to August 2026 (Ethercycle, September 2026), and stop reading other people's charts. Every published figure is either a ratio with no denominator or a small sample with honest caveats, and neither can tell you whether your brand is ahead or behind.
WaitSpend nothing Perplexity-specific while
- Shopify's admin has no Perplexity channel report under Sales channels > Agentic (Shopify Help Center, October 2026), so a Perplexity program can be judged only on its referral sales.
- A vendor sells an AI-visibility score, not your referral data. Deploi's AI answer engine visibility record holds paid tools until your tracking shows a gap.
CustomizeMeasure your own split now when
- Your Shopify Analytics reports already separate AI referrers: Referrer Channel for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, and Referrer Host gemini.google.com for Gemini (Shopify, May 2026).
- A vendor or a board deck quotes another store's engine split. Your own Referrer Channel report answers it for your store, which no published sample can.

How much store traffic does Perplexity send in absolute terms?
Perplexity sent about 0.008% of all sessions across a 73-store sample, roughly 1 visit in 13,000, in a study that splits AI traffic by engine. Shero Commerce found that AI assistants brought 0.21% of sessions and 0.26% of orders across 73 stores, 42 of them on Shopify, in 2026. Perplexity sent 3.7% of those AI visits (Shero Commerce, September 2026). Multiplying the two gives Perplexity's share of all sessions, against about 0.19% for ChatGPT and 0.01% for Gemini (Deploi arithmetic).
A Shopify-only sample finds the whole channel even smaller. AI assistants drove 0.10% of sessions and 0.12% of revenue across 10 US Shopify stores from January to August 2026, under Shopify's last non-direct click attribution (Ethercycle, September 2026). No platform publishes these volumes by engine, which is why the agentic commerce timeline for a $20M to $100M brand starts from your own admin rather than from a forecast.
How does Perplexity compare with ChatGPT and Gemini?
Perplexity trails both ChatGPT and Gemini, in store visits and across the wider web. In Shero Commerce's 73-store sample, Perplexity sent 3.7% of AI visits in 2026, against 88.1% for ChatGPT and 5.1% for Gemini (Shero Commerce, September 2026). Ethercycle's 10 Shopify stores show the same lead: ChatGPT is "over 80% of all AI referrals" (Ethercycle, September 2026). Statcounter's September 2026 shares rank the three engines the same way worldwide, and on US websites Perplexity also trails Microsoft Copilot (Statcounter, US data, October 2026).
Perplexity visitors also bought less often than ChatGPT visitors: 0.80% converted, against 1.32% for ChatGPT and 0.76% for Gemini, in the same 73 stores. So Perplexity drove about 2% of AI orders and ChatGPT about 92% (Deploi arithmetic, weighting each engine's visits by its conversion rate).
Is Perplexity one of Shopify's AI sales channels?
No, Perplexity is not one of Shopify's AI sales channels today. Shopify's agentic storefronts, which sell a store's products inside AI chats, cover ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Perplexity appears nowhere on the Help Center pages for agentic storefronts or Shopify Catalog (Shopify Help Center, Catalog page, October 2026). That list changed. Shopify launched agentic storefronts in December 2025 for "AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot" (Shopify, December 2025). By 24 March 2026 Shopify's list read ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app (Shopify, March 2026).
Where do Perplexity sales show up for a Shopify store?
Perplexity sales show up in Shopify Analytics as Perplexity referrals when the buyer pays on your store, and, by Shopify's account, in PayPal when the buyer pays inside Perplexity. Shopify Analytics filters any report by Referrer Channel for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, and by Referrer Host gemini.google.com for Gemini (Shopify, May 2026). A buyer who pays inside Perplexity uses Instant Buy, Perplexity's in-chat checkout, which Perplexity says is "currently available to all users in the United States" (Perplexity Help Center, October 2026). Shopify's guide says those orders "are managed through PayPal rather than your Shopify admin" (Shopify blog, April 2026).
Shopify's own AI-channel reports leave Perplexity out. Shopify reports sales, orders, sessions and conversion for each AI channel you sell on, under Sales channels > Agentic, and Perplexity is not one of them (Shopify Help Center, October 2026). So to see how Perplexity presents your products, test the AI engines yourself alongside Shopify's reports.
How far can you trust the published numbers for each AI engine?
Trust the published numbers for Perplexity, ChatGPT and Gemini as an order of magnitude, not a benchmark, because every data set carries a stated limit.
- Both store samples, Shero Commerce's 73 stores and Ethercycle's 10 US Shopify stores, are the agencies' own clients. Ethercycle calls its AI-optimized stores "closer to a ceiling than a floor" and says "Ten stores is not a sample you run significance tests on" (Ethercycle, September 2026).
- Gemini reads low against ChatGPT. Gemini and Claude tagged none of the 1,243 links they produced in Ethercycle's August 2026 test, so their app traffic is invisible and their shares are understated against ChatGPT's. ChatGPT loses untagged app clicks to Direct as well, which is why Shopify's AI-channel number is a floor.
We cite both studies anyway, because a study that lists its own ceiling is more useful than a vendor chart with no method at all. The one showcase share Shopify published, Omnilux's, sits far above both samples, which is expected: Shopify chose Omnilux and Cozy Earth as showcases, not as averages.
When should you not act on Perplexity, ChatGPT or Gemini traffic figures?
You should not act on Perplexity, ChatGPT or Gemini traffic figures in four situations.
Deploi’s point of view
Our own position, from building on Shopify. Kept apart from the sourced facts above.
- Where we disagree
- The generative engine optimization (GEO) tooling category prices itself against an assumption that AI referral volume is already material. On the independent store evidence it sits at 0.12% of revenue to 0.26% of orders, which does not support a five-figure annual tool spend for most brands in this band. Spend the same money on product data, which every channel reads, including the ones that already send you more than 99% of your traffic.
- What we refuse to quote
- a share of Shopify GMV attributable to AI channels, for any engine. Shopify has had two chances to publish it and has published growth multiples both times.
- What this page adds
- the split of store visits and conversion by engine from two independent store samples, Statcounter's September 2026 web-wide shares, where Perplexity sits in Shopify's channels and reports, and how to read your own split in Shopify Analytics.
Decision records behind this answer
When this answer changes
- Shopify adds Perplexity as an agentic storefronts channel, with its own sales report in the admin.
- Perplexity routes Instant Buy orders through Shopify's checkout instead of PayPal.
- Perplexity, OpenAI or Google publishes merchant-facing referral or citation data.
- Statcounter's monthly shares put Perplexity back above Gemini, worldwide or in the US.
- Ethercycle or Shero Commerce updates its store sample with a new split by engine.
- Shopify reports AI channels as a share of gross merchandise volume instead of a growth multiple.

- Are Omnilux's '3.2% of revenue from AI channels' and Cozy Earth's '20x YoY AI-channel growth' numbers typical, or are those the exceptions Shopify chose to showcase?
Shopify's Omnilux and Cozy Earth figures are real but not typical, because Shopify chose them as showcases.
- What counts as an 'AI-channel' sale in Shopify's reporting? Does it include a customer who just researched on ChatGPT but bought later through Google?
Shopify counts an AI-channel sale two ways, and by default a ChatGPT-researched sale bought through a Google click goes to Google, because marketing reports credit the last click that is not a direct visit (Shopify Help Center, October 2026).
- Does Shopify's own "search intelligence" AI-query reporting in Agentic Storefronts cover the same ground as manually testing ChatGPT ourselves?
Shopify's agentic storefronts reporting does not cover the same ground as manual ChatGPT testing.
